Squawk Box, which debuted on CNBC in 1995, can refer to a number of television programmes broadcast by the CNBC group of television channels which air at breakfast time on their station of origin. Most specifically, it refers to the original US program on which the others are based.
The title originates from the term for the use of an intercom in investment banks and stock brokerages to communicate stock deals or sales priorities.

[edit] History
The original Squawk Box is a morning TV program on CNBC in which the hosts and a guest analyze the investment market. It is named after the squawk box, an intercom system loudspeaker used on trading desks. The programme airs from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. Eastern Time. It is also relayed live on CNBC Europe from noon until 3 p.m. Western European Time (except on the week between the last Sunday of March and the first Sunday of April; sometimes it is pre-empted for local programming, in cases of major events such as European Central Bank interest rate announcements) and is also relayed live on CNBC Asia.
The program was originally presented by New Jersey lawyer Mark Haines. But Haines was eventually replaced in that capacity in December 2005 by Rebecca Quick.
Other regular contributors included Joe Kernen, David Faber, Steve Liesman, and others. Maria Bartiromo appeared on the show on occasion. The programme currently covers the opening bells of the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Stock Market at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Other regular segments included:
- the Squawk Exchange
- On the Box
- Joe's World
- First on CNBC
The program has its own blog on Windows Live Spaces, called SquawkBlog, where the program hosts post their comments. The show also has a daily poll on CNBC's website, called "Squawk Back Poll."
The US program underwent a significant revamp on December 19, 2005, with its expansion to a four hour slot (6 a.m.-10 a.m. ET). Joe Kernen, Rebecca Quick, and Carl Quintanilla are the new hosts, with Mark Haines, Erin Burnett (both of whom anchor from the New York Stock Exchange), and David Faber presenting the Squawk on the Street segment from 9-10 am. Other contributors include Melissa Lee, Darby Dunn (who presents the "CNBC.com Biz Wire" segments), Christine Tan (CNBC Asia), Ross Westgate (CNBC Europe), Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, Jane Ong (Hong Kong), Melissa Francis, Sharon Epperson (NYMEX), Rick Santelli (Chicago), Steve Liesman, Liz Claman, and CNBC senior analyst Ron Insana.
Also, meteorologists from NBC Weather Plus contribute to the "Business Travel Forecast" segments.
When the US Squawk Box program moved to 6am ET on December 19, 2005, there was no guest host. Now, there is occasionally a guest host, who now appears in the second and third hour of the show, similar to that of its Asia and Europe counterparts. But recently, a guest host has been appearing in all 3 hours of the US program.
Since 12/19/2005, there have been an avalanche of negative complaints against these new changes, most notably the removal of Mark Haines from the Squawk Box team. On the SquawkBox Blog, over 200+ complaints have been entered into the site, along with numerous messages posted on the CNBC Squawk Box message board, plus over 500 complaints have been e-mailed directly to CNBC about the changes.
[edit] Worldwide Squawk Box
Around CNBC's global branches, there are many "Squawk Boxes" in the world:
Channel | Program |
---|---|
CNBC Europe | Squawk Box Europe |
CNBC Asia | Asia Squawk Box |
Nikkei CNBC | Tokyo Squawk Box (formerly program) |
CNBC-TV18 | Bazaar (formerly program) |
CNBC-e | Geri Sayım |
Class-CNBC | Caffè Affari |
Among above, Squawk Box Europe and Asia Squawk Box are the counterparts like the original Squawk Box the most:
- They are all 3 hours.
- They all have a guest host appearing on the show, mostly after the first hour.
[edit] "Fantasy Portfolio Challenge"
150,221 players participated in the Squawk Box Fantasy Portfolio Challenge. That contest ran from April 4, 2006 through May 26, 2006. The winner of the Squawk Box Fantasy Portfolio Challenge, which was announced live at the end of the June 2, 2006 episode, was Thomas Ko, of California. His $5,015,735 portfolio value outpaced all the other contenders. He was also the winner of a brand-new, limited-production, 2006 Maserati GranSport.
