[edit] Academics
St. Peter's Prep has been located at the corner of Grand Street and Warren Street (Paulus Hook region of Jersey City, NJ) since 1872. Prep consists of six buildings. Mulry Hall, Burke Hall, Hogan Hall, Shalloe, St. Peter's church, and the Humanities building (E-building). Prep has also purchased land in which they have constructed a football/soccer field. The football field is not yet regulation, so plans are being made.
St. Peter's Prep's entrance examination is the COOP exam. After a review board chooses the students, they send out letters of acceptance to the accepted students. They are required to take an honors test for freshman year mathematics and English. Students at Prep are required to take two years of Latin, three years mathematics, 3 years history, 3 years science, 4 years English, 4 years physical education, 2 years modern language, and 4 years religion. Other elective classes are offered to juniors and seniors.
In 1964, Father John Browning, S.J. '46 started the Jesuit HAP (Higher Achievement Program). The program was designed for eighth grade students (summer before eight grade semester) in order to prepare them for the upcoming year and give them a challenge. It combined athletics, academics, and social skills all into one five-week summer course. Tutors who attend the school stay over the summer to assist the teachers and the students. It costs $75 for locals to Jersey City and $130 for outside students. After its founding in St. Peter's, it has spread to many other Jesuit schools. At Prep, Mr. John Irvine '83 is the current head of the program.
Prep also offers a freshman for a day program for those in eight grade. It allows the student to see what a "day in the life" at St. Peter's is like. They attend classes with a Freshman Ambassador that introduces the new "freshman" to his teachers and then shows him around the building.
[edit] Athletics
The school's 16 varsity athletic teams are called the Marauders and wear Maroon and Silver. The teams compete in the HCIAA and the NJSIAA. St. Peter's Prep football won the 2005 Parochial Group IV State Championship defeating Don Bosco Prep 22-15.[1] In 2006, St. Peter's Prep fell short in the finals of the Non-Public, Group IV tournament, losing 41-0 to Don Bosco Prep.[2]
