Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is a video game that takes place 15 years before the events of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. The game revolves around the rising of tensions between Belka and the combined forces of Osea, Yuktobania, Ustio, and Sapin. Several characters from Ace Combat 5 make an appearance in Ace Combat Zero, but they appear in tertiary roles. The player plays as a mercenary, "Cipher", hired by the country of Ustio, which was invaded in an attack from Belka. Many elements from Ace Combat 4 and 5 are in this game like "Pops" and the Superweapons.

The game features primarily older versions of fighter aircraft seen in its predecessor game, such as F-15, F/A-18, and several second generation aircraft like the Saab Draken. The player will go up against enemy ace squadrons who feature enhanced weaponry and combat prowess. Players who destroy everything without regard to hostility will receive the "Mercenary" rank, players who instead spare neutral targets will receive the "Knight" rank, and those that strike a balance between the two will earn the "Soldier" rank. These ranks will affect which enemy ace squadrons a player will face throughout the campaign. A split-screen versus mode is included with the game, but no online feature exists.

In Europe this game was released under the title Ace Combat: The Belkan War.

[edit] Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is prequel to the previous Ace Combat game: Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. It re-tells the events of a war that took place earlier in the Ace Combat time line. The player is put in control of a legendary mercenary ace, who goes by the call-sign "Cipher" during this war. The story examines Cipher's effect on both the outcome of the war and the opposing aces he defeated in combat. A good part of the story is told through a series of flashback interviews by a journalist researching for an article on Cipher.

After years of internal political unrest caused by the Belkan federal law review of 1988, Belka allowed its eastern territories to secede in an attempt to remedy the ongoing economic crisis that had befallen the country. However, the series of secession that followed did not have its intended effect, but only weaken Belkan borders. Osea, a nearby nation, seized the opportunity and installed pro-Osean governments within the eastern provinces by assisting them in declaring independence. On December 12 1991, a right winged party, on the promise of reclaiming Belkan's former glory, took control of the Belkan government. Shortly after, abundant natural resources were discovered in B7R, a region lying between Belka and the bordering eastern nations. In an effort to seize the resources, Belka invaded the eastern nations on March 25 1995. Initially, they were successful in capturing most territories that were lost to them during the secession. The invasion prompted Osea and their allied nation, Yuktobania to form a coalition and launch a counter-offensive into the eastern territories. In order to compliment their regular forces, Osean and Yuktobanian hired mercenaries.

This is where the story of Cipher and his wingman, Pixy begins.

Their early missions centers around driving the Belkan forces out of Ustio, one of the eastern nations. They succeeded in securing a direct route to the Ustian capitol of Directus, and liberated the city from Belka on May 13 1995.

After securing much of the occupied eastern region from Belkan control, the two mercenaries were ordered into Belka where they begun offensive operations against the Belkan military. At this point, Pixy started to question the validity of coalition's push into Belka. Allied force was alerted to the existence of a Belkan super weapon, Excalibur during a regular escort mission. The Excalibur was anti-ballistic-missile shield, which the Belkan had converted into an rather effective anti-air weapon. The mercenaries were forced to re-focus their attention in destroying this potential threat. On May 23 1995 the Excalibur was destroyed largely thanks to the effort of Cipher and Pixy. Later, the two were involved in numerous sorties including an offensive bombing campaign against the city of Hoffnung on the June 1 1995, where it is revealed that the Belkans are resorting to a scorched earth policy in order to keep their technologies away from enemy hands.

On the June 6 1995, Cipher and Pixy were ordered on a mission to intercept Belkan bombers suspected of carrying nuclear payload. However, this was only a diversion tactic on the Belkan's part to mask their true intention, which turned out to be the detonation of seven nuclear bombs inside Belkan borders. During the confusion immediately after the nuclear detonations, Pixy, in an apparent act of betrayal, attacked Cipher from behind and escaped before Cipher could return fire. Cipher, damaged and without support, was ordered to return to base immediately.

Realizing the extremity of which Belkan government is willing to take in the war, Osean and Yuktobania started peace talk with Belka. A peace agreement was signed on June 20 1995, signifying the end of fighting between armies of Belka and the two allied nations. However, Cipher and his replacement wingman, PJ were sent back into Belka to root out the remnant of Belkan military that had rejected the peace accord. As the fighting continued for the two mercenaries, PJ realized the opposing forces were too large and well equipped to be a mere splinter faction.

During the intercept of the Hresvelgr, a Belkan prototype aircraft on December 25 1995, Cipher and PJ discovered that the "remnant" forces were in fact, a terrorist group calling themselves A World With No Boundaries, formed by disgruntled former Osean, Sapin, Yuktobanian, and Belkan aces and ex-mercenaries with the ideal of forming a border-less nation (thus the name).

Cipher and PJ's final sortie turned out to be the destruction of V2, an ICBM containing a massive nuclear warhead. Before they could accomplish that objective, they were set upon by fighters piloted by members of "A World With No Boundaries". After defeating these pilots above the B7R region, Cipher and PJ arrived at the Avalon Dam in northern Belka. During the destruction of the V2 launch facility, Pixy, appeared in an ADFX-02 aircraft. PJ was shot down over the dam by Pixy, his fate is unknown. Cipher was forced to face Pixy alone in the final dogfight. Cipher was victorious in the end and succeeded in the total destruction of the V2.

The story ended with a final footage, which the journalist interviewed Pixy. He is shown fighting on a disputed border in present-day Usea. He has changed his perspective on why people fight for national identities and borders and has only one thing to say to his former wingman:

"Yo, buddy. Still alive? And thanks, friend. See you again..."

[edit] The Round Table (Area/Airspace B7R)

A screenshot of the Round Table.
A screenshot of the Round Table.

This particular airspace is one of the main battle zones in the game and the border between Belka and Ustio. Aces who distinguish themselves in this area are known as "Knights of the Round Table".

Known as "Operational Airspace B7R", or more formally "Belkan Priority One Strategic Airspace B7R", it is located at north latitude 24° east longitude 235°. The topography makes the location look like a giant circle with a 400 km radius, hence the name "The Round Table". It is the attack corridor used by Belka to invade not just Ustio, but also its surrounding nations, making it an extremely important strategic location, charged to many Belkan aces to defend. The reason for the outbreak of war is the large cache of natural resources found within this area, making it very hotly contested. It is also the site where the player will encounter many enemy ace squadrons.

The area over The Round Table, is indeceptable to any radio- or distress signals. If you get shot down, it will for that reason be very hard to get a signal through, let alone survive on this barren, empty land. In the Round table you meet many chracters from Ace Combat 5 like Heartbreak one, Grabacr, Hukenbine(Pops) in Mercenary mode; Ofnir in soider mode; and Yellow 13 in Knight mode; also in the Guanlet mission when you beat Espada team inless than one minute in Ace mode you get to dogfight Mobious 1. But you can only see these characters in the mayhem mission, save for Mobious 1.

[edit] Characters

[edit] Narrator

  • Brett Thompson - OBC Reporter

A journalist working for the Osean Broadcasting Company (OBC). He is the one preparing a documentary about the Belkan War and interviewing the Ace Pilots in the game. His project is named "Special: Warriors of The Belkan War".

  • GALM SQUADRON -- 6th Air Division / 66th Air Force Unit

Commander: GALM 1 (Mercenary) - Cipher: "The Demon Lord".

A mercenary and unknown main character. No explanation is given about Cipher's life after the war.

Wingman: GALM 2 (Mercenary) - Larry "Pixy" Foulke: "A Brother in Arms".

Wingman of the main character. He is nicknamed "Solo Wing Pixy" because of a mission where his plane's right wing was blown off but he still managed to complete the mission and return (this has some reference to a real-life incident involving an Israeli F-15D Eagle [1], a two-seat trainer version of the F-15C Eagle, Pixy's preferred plane). He is Belkan in origin. After the war he continued his life as a mercenary. During 2005, when the narrator is interviewing him, he was a volunteer in the Usean Continent and is fighting in the country of Delarus.

Quote: "Yo Buddy. Still alive? And thanks, friend. See you again"

  • CROW SQUADRON -- 6th Air Division / 4th Air Force Unit

Commander: CROW 1 (Mercenary) (Reassigned)

Wingman: CROW 2 (Mercenary) (Reassigned)

Crow 1 and 2's status is unknown. After Mission 12, Crow Team is disbanded. CROW 1 and 2 were probably sent into another air force unit.

Wingman: CROW 3, later reassigned as GALM 2 to replace Pixy (Mercenary) - Patrick James "PJ" Beckett (MIA, presumed killed)

A pilot that flies for Valais Air Base's Crow Mercenary Team who happens to fly an F-16. When he finished high school, he traveled alone by motorcycle across the Osean continent. He flies with the main character when Pixy is not part of the unit. Although a capable pilot, he appears to be young and slightly naive often stating that he is fighting to stop the fighting. Pixy does not seem to like his way of thinking. He had a girlfriend who he was planning to propose to. He got shot down after Mission 17 and listed as MIA since it's not confirmed he is dead or alive. His last words were "Dang it!", when his aircraft flew into the path of a laser. It is unknown if this was an accident, or an attempt to shield Cipher. Although he is listed as MIA, it is worth noting that the ending sequence shows a piece of wreckage in the area of Avalon Dam where PJ was shot down. A bouquet of flowers is laid by the wreckage which would suggest it marks his grave.

Quote: "I'll escort you any way I can, Galm team."

  • EAGLE EYE AWACS WING - 6th Air Division / Airborne Warning And Control System Wing

Commander / Lead Plane: EAGLE EYE -E-767 (or similar aircraft) (After destroying the V2 there is an E-767(or similar aircraft) in the background and eagle eye speaks).

Unknown AWACS commander assigned to 6th Air Force , including Galm and Crow teams. His identity is also unknown, similar to Sky Eye from Ace Combat 4, Thunderhead and Oka Nieba from Ace Combat 5.

Quote: "Galm team, we cannot authorize a retreat; intercept them."

  • ROT SQUADRON -- 2nd Air Division / 52nd Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: ROT 1 - Detlef "Red Swallow" Fleisher: "A Pilot That Lives by Pride".

This squadron consists of four Eurofighter Typhoons with a red, light blue, and white paint scheme. This squadron was the most famous in the Belkan Air Force and was frequently used as propaganda and to attract recruits. They can use XLAA while dog fighting. Detlef Fleisher is a very talented pilot, who is extremely prideful. After the war he quit the military and became a Professor of History at the University of Dinsmark in Belka.

ACE TYPE: Mercenary

Quote:

  1. "Rot 1 to all craft. Time to hunt some wild dogs. Down 'em all!"

  • GRUN SQUADRON -- 10th Air Division / 8th Tactical fighter squadron

Commander: GRUN 1 - Bernard "Owl" Schmidt: "The Strategist".

This squadron is extremely flexible and can change to any flying style to suit the current situation. Schmidt is also nicknamed the "Night Owl" for his outstanding vision. His squadron of four uses F/A-18C Hornets with a green paint scheme. He speaks with a distinctive British accent. After the war, Schmidt settled down in his hometown of Sudentor.

ACE TYPE: Soldier

Quote:

  1. "Looks like you Ustio mercenaries made the wrong choice."

  • INDIGO SQUADRON -- 7th Air Division / 51st Tactical fighter squadron

Commander: INDIGO 1 - Dimitri "Blue Heron" Heinreich: "A Man Who Upholds Honor".

This squadron uses four Gripen Cs. They were posted to the eastern battle line. They are also known for their elegant style of combat which gained them the name "Indigo Order of Belka". They have the ability to use XMAAs in combat. Dimitri Heinreich is from a Belkan noble family who were once knights. After the war he took over the family business.

ACE TYPE: Knight

Quote:

  1. "Unlike you mercenaries, I fight for a real cause."

  • GELB SQUADRON - 5th Air Division / 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: GELB 1 - Maj Orbert Jager (KIA)

Wingman: GELB 2 - 2nd Lieutenant Rainer "Cormorant" Altman : "The Fallen".

This is a two-man squadron, which uses two Su-37 Terminators. They are known collectively as "The Coupled Cormorants". They can fire regular missiles backwards. While Orbert Jager was killed in battle, Rainer Altman survives and settles down at Directus. He is currently living in Directus with his family.

It is also interesting to note that "Gelb" is the German word for Yellow, a homage to the Yellow Squadron of Ace Combat 04 that also flew Su-37's. Although not identical, the Gelb Squadron livery does have similarities to that of Yellow Squadron, especially on the wings.

ACE TYPE: All

Quote:

  1. "There's two of them and two of us. That works in our favor."

  • SCHWARZE SQUADRON -- 13th Night Fighter Air Division / 6th Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: SCHWARZE 1 - Captain Dominic "Vulture" Zubov : "The Bringer of Death".

ACE TYPE: Mercenary

This squadron of eight uses MiG-31 Foxhounds with black and red paint schemes (the colors of fear). Zubov leads the Schwarze flight. A special surveillance and night fighter unit. They are the only unit in the Belkan airforce that has unconditional clearance to engage at will. Schwarze Wing is also infamous for their clearance of shooting down friendly forces without hesitation if they try to run away from combat (reminiscent of the duties carried out by the NKVD during World War II). They are nicknamed "The Vultures" and are universally feared and hated. Investigations are still being done into war crimes committed by the members of the squadron, and many members are still missing. The Schwarze Leader and Schwarze 2 are also from the country of Yuktobania. After the war, Dominic Zubov became a fugitive, fleeing from punishment for the crimes he committed.

Quote:

  1. "Feeling a bit scared? Afraid? That's just death lurking around."

  • SCHNEE SQUADRON -- 22nd Air Division / 4th Tactical Figher Squadron

Commander: SCHNEE 1 - 2nd Lieutenant Erich "Phonix" Hillenbrand: "A Man Who Lived for Battle".

Never liking to belong to a specific faction, Hillenbrand is still a 2nd Lieutenant despite his skill and experience. Never interested in promotion or awards, Hillenbrand's only loves are flight and combat. Because of this he is nicknamed "The Eternal 2nd Lieutenant". He is fiercely trusted by his wingmen, just like every ace in the Belkan Air Force. His squadron uses 4 F-14D Super Tomcats for combat and one EA-6B Prowler for jamming enemy radar. After inflicting critical damage to enemy forces in southern frontier (possibly Osean forces) they were sent to the frontline. They have the ability to use XLAAs in combat. After he got shot down, Hillenberand walks to the nearest base on foot and quits the air force soon after. After the war he moves to North Osea (formerly South Belka) and becomes a pilot instructor for a commercial airline company.

ACE TYPE: Soldier

Quote:

  1. "This is our turf and we'll fly how we please."

  • SILBER SQUADRON 51st Air Division / 126th Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: SILBER 1 - Lieutenant Colonel Dietrich "Boss" Kellerman: "The Reborn Veteran".

Already retired from active duty, Kellerman was called to the active duty after the war to boost the troop morale. He was once director of a special air force academy called the "Kellerman Instution". He was training pilot cadets before he was recalled to active duty. He is known as a man of few words, letting his flying skills talk for him. He pilots a F-4E Phantom II, however his wingmen use F-16C Fighting Falcons which are painted with silver zebra paint schemes. After he got shot down, he quits the military and moves to countryside where he works in his own farm, living a quiet life.

ACE TYPE: Knight

Quote:

  1. "If you get confused, just let your hands take over. You've had enough training to do this in your sleep."

2)'Where did you learn to fight like that, mercenary?'

  • GAULT SQUADRON -- 18th Air Division / 5th Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: GAULT 1 - Commander Anton "Dr." Kupchenko: "The Guardian" (KIA)

Kupchenko was a Belkan ace and highly decorated officer years prior to the war. Before being sent to the front again, he was head of Belka's weapons development and technology. He is also thought to have been the head director of "A World with No Boundaries". He and his squadron fly eight Su-47 aircraft. He was shot down and killed in B7R. For some strange reason all photographic evidence showing his face was destroyed by someone. He was buried at a public cemetery in Belka.

ACE TYPE: Soldier

Commander: ESPADA 1 - Alberto Lopez (KIA, Officially MIA)

Wingman: ESPADA 2 - 2nd Lieutenant Marcela "Macarena" Vasquez: "A Woman of Undying Faith"

Espada 1 flying a J35J Draken, Espada 2 flying a Rafale M. Her squadron makes an appearance late in the game, as the escort unit for the Hresvelgr. Although her captain is shot down, she survives and returns to Gran Rugido, Sapin to continue living as a dancer.

ACE TYPE: N/A

[edit] Defected from Osea Air Defence Force

  • SORCERER SQUADRON -- 8th Air Division / 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: SORCERER 1 - 1st Lieutenant Anthony "Bedivere" Palmer: "The Witness".

An experienced and decorated ace, Palmer's connections to Bristow led him to join the group "A World with No Boundaries". His squadron of eight F-15S/MTD planes engages the player in the B7R region in the final sorties of the game. Armed with XLAA missiles, his pilots come at the player in pairs and attack from very long range. After the war, he makes a living in Oured as an insurance salesman.

ACE TYPE: Mercenary

  1. "Target confirmed. Sorcerer 1 to all planes, apply full thrust. Don't even think about heading back."
  • WIZARD SQUADRON -- 8th Air Division / 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron

Commander: WIZARD 1 - Captain Joshua "Lucan" Bristow: "A Revolutionary".

Rumored to be one of the founders of "A World with No Boundaries", Bristow's involvement in the Belkan war is shrouded in mystery. Four F-16XL and four YF-23 aircraft make up his squadron. Disappearing shortly after the war, he is later found to be part of a terrorist organization, captured, and imprisoned in Osea. Most of the surviving members of the squadron attempted to assassinate the president of Osea in 1996. However, The plot was leaked by Kevin Shore and the remaining members were killed or arrested by the Osean Special Forces.

ACE TYPE: Knight

Quote:

  1. "The darkness envelops me in a borderless world. I'm rather fond of it."

[edit] Belkan super weapons

A screenshot of the Excalibur in action.
A screenshot of the Excalibur in action.

Some focus of Ace Combat Zero revolves around Belka's three super weapons. The first of these weapons is the Excalibur Ballistic Missile Defense platform. Developed in 1981, it is a symbol of Belka's military dominance. It is categorized as a chemical laser based weapon which was designed to shoot down incoming missiles and to stop enemy invasions. By utilizing high-altitude aircraft and satellites carrying reflectors, the laser's range can be extended to counteract the curvature of the earth and achieve a range of 1,200 km. This technology is similar in design to the Arkbird's laser system (and to a lesser extent the FALKEN's laser system) in Ace Combat 5 as part of Belka was taken over by Osea and Gründer Industries began to sell its cache of weapons and technology. Also during Ace Combat 5 in the mission to protect the Kestrel the first time there is a SPY radar ship named Excalibur.

A screenshot of the Hresvelgr aircraft.
A screenshot of the Hresvelgr aircraft.

The second super weapon originating in Belka is the massive XB-0 Hresvelgr aircraft. Developed by the South Belkan Gründer Industries and built at Mt. Schirm, this gargantuan flying fortress is actually a prototype with no mass production as of 1995. It is designed to act as a staging area and aerial aircraft carrier for air and land dominance operations, and, because of its size, can act as a large-volume transport and bomber. Despite its cost to maintain, the terrorist organization, "A World with No Boundaries", has seen fit to utilize the Hresvelgr.

The third weapon is known as V2. Most likely named for the real-life German V2 rocket of World War II, the weapon is an ICBM containing a multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle. The yield of this weapon is much greater than any other nuclear weapon in existence.

[edit] Ace Style

Your actions dictate who you are now. Nearly every mission contains red (target), green (hostile), and yellow (neutral/neutralized) targets. The player's ace status will depend on how many neutral targets he or she destroys. A player can shift along on a continuum from Mercenary to Soldier to Knight and back:

  • Mercenary Ace: An Ace who lives for power. He/she will strike down all opposition for the sake of his/her money & strength. If you go about destroying all of the neutral targets, your ranking will gravitate towards this category.
  • Soldier Ace: An Ace who fights with precision. Can predict the situation in an instant and change the flow of battle. To become a Soldier Ace, you must balance destroying neutral targets while letting an equal amount free and/or survive.
  • Knight Ace: A proud Ace. Cool-headed, pacifistic and believes in honor. Avoiding the destruction of neutral targets will shift your position towards this ranking.

At the end of the game, the player can view exactly where on the continuum he or she was during each mission.

What kind of Ace you are determines which Belkan Ace squads you will meet in certain missions.

Mission 15 is the last mission which determines what ace style you will get at the end of the game. Missions after 15 will not affect/move the arrow of ace style.

[edit] Trivia

  • The presence of a Spanish guitar is present throughout the game.
  • Cipher's nickname later in the game is "The Demon Lord" or "The Demon of the Round Table." This is fitting as he is in the 6th Air Division, 66th Air Force Unit. 666 is popularly known as "the Devil's Number" in biblical mythology.
  • Galm may be a variation of or phonetic translation error of the word Garm. Garm is a demon dog who guards Hel. There is a demon dog on the Galm emblem.
  • Hresvelgr may be a rough translation of the Norse god Hræsvelgr who works, in legend, with another god called Garm. In this mythology, Hræsvelgr is a giant eagle whose name means "Corpse Swallower".
  • Avalon is where King Arthur was taken after his final battle with Mordred.
  • The Belkan southern defense line is called the Hydrian line. This may be a translation error of Hadrian's Wall, the where Arthorius (King Arthur) and his knights stood against the Saxon force, it may also be a reference to the real life Siegfried Line in Germany.
  • All major Belkan ace squadrons are German words for colors: Rot = red, Grun (in German Grün) = green, Gelb = yellow, Schwarze (in German Schwarz) = black, Schnee = snow, Silber = silver, Gault = Gold (Also means "luck" in Spanish)
  • The Country of Belka's name comes from the Russian word for squirrel.
  • The Kingdom of Sapin's name is a simple anagram of Spain. In fact Espada (Sapin's team) means sword and both of pilots have a Spanish name.
  • A number of characters from Ace Combat 5 make appearances in Ace Combat Zero:
    • Heartbreak One (Capt. Jack Bartlett) and Huckebein the Raven (Wolfgang Buchner, aka "Pops") appear in mission 10 (Mercenary) on Ace difficulty. They're piloting an F-14D and MiG-21bis, respectively.
    • Ashley Bernitz (Grabacr) appears flying a Su-47 chasing after Barlett and Buchner.
    • Michael Heimeroth (Ofnir) appears in mission 10 (Soldier) flying an F-15S/MTD.
  • The date that the Belkans drop 7 nuclear bombs, June 6, 1995 coincides with the date of D-Day
  • The Gault Team is told not to look at the enemy but only to listen to orders. This is the same strategy that was used during the Vietnam war by MiG-21 Fishbed pilots.
  • The name for the ADFX-01 / -02 "Morgan" is a reference to Morgan le Fay, the supposed half sister of King Arthur
  • Solo Wing Pixy's real name is Larry Foulke; in reality, Larry Foulke is the name of the President of the American Nuclear Society.
  • "Solo Wing" Pixy's nickname comes from an incident in which he got his wing knocked off. This is based on a real event that occured in the Israeli Air Force.

On May 1, 1983, during an Israeli Air Force training dogfight, an F-15D collided with an A-4 Skyhawk. Unknown to pilot Zivi Nadavi, the right wing of the Eagle was torn off roughly two feet (0.6 m) from the fuselage. The pilot disobeyed his instructor's command to eject and managed to land the crippled aircraft successfully. The aircraft was able to land because of the large horizontal surface area of the tail and the amount of lift generated by the engine intake and body.

  • The story-long narrator is believed to be "Solo Wing Pixy" Larry Foulke. This belief is strong, because at the end of the game, the narrator wanted to give "him" a message, "Hey, Buddy. Still Alive?" This alludes to the fact that Pixy survived the crash, yet the fate of the "Demon Lord" is still unknown.
