The Art of Drowning is an album by AFI, released in 2000. Widely considered one of the highest-quality albums of the early-2000s hardcore punk rock, The Art of Drowning chart success was surprising for a punk rock band.[citation needed]

- The inner-edge of the CD case reveals a hidden message: "Battled". This is the name of the album's secret track.
- "The Despair Factor" contains the lyrics "My whole life is a dark room... one big dark room," which is a line originally spoken by Winona Ryder in the film Beetlejuice.
- The official AFI fan club, the Despair Faction gets its name from the song "The Despair Factor."
- To date, AFI have still never performed " Catch a Hot One" live.
