The artisan disappears - The targeted Shukaku (Japanese: 消えた匠 狙われた守鶴 - Kieta takumi - Nerawareta Shukaku) is the episode number 216 of the anime series Naruto, and the eighth episode of the 9th season.
[edit] Plot
The episode opens on Kakashi, who summons his pack of nin-dogs to help him search Takumi Village, the source of all ninja missions. Kakashi says that there have been rumors that someone is trying to manufacture an "ultimate weapon" of some kind.
The dogs search the village while Kakashi reads "Make-Out Paradise". Pakkun reports that the village is deserted. Kakashi searches the village himself, and discovers five coffins in a building. He and Pakkun try to figure out where everyone has gone.
Back in Konoha, Naruto is on his way to Ichiraku when he notices Shikamaru and Sakura talking. Jumping to conclusions, he assumes the two are on a date, and he interrupts their conversation only to discover that they were talking about medical research to counteract a new poison. Sakura also says that the Village Hidden in the Sand has set up a training school that is much like Konoha's Ninja Academy. Gaara, Kankuro and Temari will be acting as instructors. Shikamaru expresses doubt that Temari can be a good instructor, while Naruto is apparently confident in Gaara's abilities.
At the Sand Village, Gaara, Kankuro and Temari supervise 18 students. When the students are told to pick their preferred sensei, Gaara only gets one, a rather timid young girl named Matsuri. When the students are instructed to choose a weapon, she tries to use a club that is much too big for her. Gaara selects another, more suitable weapon; a "jouhyou" (sort of a grappling hook attached to a line that retracts into the handle).
Gaara demonstrates the proper usage of the jouhyou, which is designed to entangle the enemy at a distance and prevent them from attacking. He is then called away, leaving Matsuri to practice with her new weapon for a little while. While he's gone, enemy ninjas calling themselves "Shitenshounin" enter the village and kidnap Matsuri. The Sand Siblings are ordered to find her and bring her back. But they know that the kidnapping is only a ruse; the enemy’s true target is Gaara himself!
Baki (the Siblings' sensei) sends a message to Tsunade, informing her of what has happened, and that the enemies are moving from the River Country towards the Land of Fire. Tsunade orders Shikamaru to assemble a team of genin and move out in 30 minutes. He asks for and gets Sakura, despite the fact that it will interrupt her medical training.
The team is set up in an unusual formation. A six-man team consisting of 3 two-man cells will be the main pursuit force. They are Shikamaru & Ino, Kiba & Choji, and Naruto & Rock Lee. Shino and Sakura will be well out in front as recon and medical support, and Shino also operates as Shikamaru's command & control element. Neji and Hinata spread out on either side of Shino and Sakura, using their Byakugan to search for the enemy. The "new and improved" Team Shikamaru sets out on its' quest. End of episode.
[edit] Trivia
- Shikamaru's new team reunites all of the pursuers from the Sasuke Retrieval Arc (Shikamaru, Naruto, Choji, Kiba & Neji), includes the one who came in later (Rock Lee), and also the ones who couldn't join the first time (Shino & Hinata). The only genin not included (then and now) is Tenten.
