[edit] License tagging for Image:City of Cranston RI Seal.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:City of Cranston RI Seal.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 07:05, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Best (designer) deletion
Hey, just wanted to see if you knew anything about this. I think I've missed a deletion review along the way, but I can't seem to find it. In any case, this deletion seems to have been very poorly documented. Take a look and tell me what you think! Thanks. tiZom(2¢) 20:33, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Regarding the Project Runway designer bios... No, I never heard from the admin, Alkivar, and I believe he also simply deleted my message to him on his Talk page. However, the good news is that the last I checked the bios for Laura Bennett and Uli Herzner were reverted by other users. I now consider Alkivar to be abusing his authority as an admin to be deleting articles in this way. Crunch 01:14, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- Also, if you look at Alkivar's deletion log, it looks like he had a little fit of deleting both Project Runway and Top Chef contestant articles all within a span of minutes on October 6, 2006 and all without due process even when some have survived votes for deletion. If you can advise how to stop this kind of abuse by admins, I'd appreciate it. Looking at this guy's discussion page, he doesn't seem like the most popular admin. You may have to look at the history of his Talk page because he tends to delete the critical message. Crunch 01:43, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Alkivar has deleted my comments without getting back to me, but had no problems deleting my comments to him [1]. Has he gotten back to you yet? There's nothing on your talk page that I can see... tiZom(2¢) 15:33, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- Still no word from Alkivar, but he continues to delete comments on his Talk page from me and others on this matter and others on the same issue and others like it. I tracked down the history of his nomination and voting as an admin see here and it seems it took three attempts and even then it was tenuous for the reasons we've seen here. I'm not sure if this is a permanent appointment, or if it comes up for renewal. In any case, it looks as if some of these deleted bios have been recreated without interference from Alkivar. Crunch 13:00, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- You've probably seen that Alkivar has now put an arrogant and snotty responose to you on this talk page. Unbelievable. Crunch 00:19, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I did see the message he left - All I really got from it was: "I'm an admin, I can do whatever I want, blah blah..." I try not to let it bother me. Ah well, I'm very non-confrontational, and it seems you are as well. :o) So it's possible that we'll never get our way with this issue. I mean, I'm a bit iffy as to whether or not Robert Best was indeed notable enough to have a page, but still I'd like to have seen the correct actions taken to remove the article. tiZom(2¢) 03:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
G'day, I noticed you created Matt Wertz's Wiki page. I was wondering, have you heard of Dave Barnes? You might notice I've used an offsite link. That's because there's no Wiki page for him. He's a musician who's (as yet) more successful than Wertz, but of the same ilk as him. I'd like to start the page but, frankly, I don't know much about him and am a moderate google ninja, but I notice you seem to be pretty good at getting info. My main question (or, more a request): Do you want to create the page? I'd be more than happy to pitch in where I can (generally, I pay more attention to the design of the pages than to the content, so I'd suck at starting it... primarily, you'd probably notice I'm mostly started up templates or stubs). --lincalinca 08:42, 2 November 2006 (UTC)!
- I have heard of Dave Barnes... in fact, I met him once after a Matt/Dave concert here in Boston :o) I haven't done a page yet for him because
- I don't know too much about him
- I didn't know he was as notable (WP:N) as Matt. I knew Matt toured nationally with some famous artists, but I had just thought that Dave Barnes was only touring with Matt... which I don't think would fly here at WP. Now that I'm reading the bio on his site though, there's no doubt in my mind that he's notable enough.
- I'll take a look and see if I can come up with anything. Any help is appreciated! tiZom(2¢) 14:49, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
G'day Tom, Though I'd mention that I got off my laurels and decided to make up the Dave Barnes page after all. Please check it out and tell me what you think. And make any adjustments that you can find. Funny as it might sound, I can't find any reference to his date of birth anywhere. Plus, the page still needs some work, particularly in the touring, personal life, christian life and other sections. In short, it's still a stub, but it's on its way now. If you know or can find his DOB, please update the page. ta --lincalinca 09:26, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey that's great! Sorry for not getting around to it - "real life" has got me busy. At any rate, you seem to know more about him than I do, so can I suggest that you add something that proves that Barnes is notable? For example, with Wertz's page, I was sure to include bands that he'd toured with. It's important, because if the WP community doesn't see that he's notable, then the page might get AFD'd. I'll keep an eye on the page. tiZom(2¢) 21:43, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey, Thanks for getting back to me on that. I've just done some extra info adding and things are looking in pretty good shape with the Dave Barnes page. All of my searches have yeilded me much information, so the page has had a bit more of an infoboost and, more importantly, a real notability boost. Still, if you have anything to add to the page, though, feel free to. you may notice that I've touched up Matt Wertz page just with the infobox and discog and uploaded all of the album covers for you over there. Thanks again! --lincalinca 07:59, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- A few things about the images:
- First of all, I reverted the smaller image you had for the CD cover - we're supposed to be using low-resolution images for CD covers.
- Second, I took the CD cover image off of Dave Barnes' page because CD cover images can only be used on pages that talk specifically about the album in question. This leads me to a question: Do you have a picture of Dave Barnes in concert? Something like that would be better to use in this situation.
- See Template:albumcover for more information.
- I hate to be the one fixing this and teling you about it, but I suppose you'd rather hear it from me than some user bot in the future. :o) tiZom(2¢) 00:15, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Infobox_Company
I saw you might be able to help with a Template import problem. I was trying to import the Template:Infobox_Company to my mediawiki installation, v 1.8.2 . But it comes out all messed up. Seems like I am missing something to do with css. Could you help me understand this better, it would be a lot of help to me. ThankYou Rovo79 21:20, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, here's the deal (or as much as I can gather...) The css for the infobox on WP is stored at MediaWiki:Common.css. You could copy that over to TCPedia wherever the CSS styles are saved on that page if you want, but in the meantime, I just copied over the actual code, so the template is all set there until you get that done. Aside from that, there are some other problems with the template. I'm no expert, but it seems that the ParserFunctions are not set up on that wiki. To get them set up, I think that m:ParserFunctions#Installation will help you. If it doesn't help, then check elsewhere on that page, and if that doesn't help, try the folks down at the Help Desk. tiZom(2¢) 00:58, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Awesome Thanks for the assistance, I think I got it now. Your homepage looks awesome by the way, great icons.Rovo79 19:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Hello, I still seem to be having a slight problem with the infobox company template. I copied over the CSS, and installed the parser function, but still seem to have a problem. Any chance you could take a peak? Here's an example, http://www.wikistock.com/wiki/Tokyo_Stock_Exchange . I almost got it, but seem to missing one thing. I greatly appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks Rovo79 15:44, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for the userpage reverts. -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 02:26, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
That's a great photo. Was it taken at the Paradise? If so, not just was I at that show, but I was standing first row, directly in front of Eirik. In fact, that was one of my favorite concerts ever. -- Kicking222 14:25, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Were you the one that started rapping? lol... Yes, that was at Paradise, and so funny that you were there too! I have a bunch of other pictures as well (probably one or two with you in the background!), though none of them came out that good, as I was using a not-so-great camera at the time. Nevertheless, if you care to see them, just let me know, and I'll e-mail them to you. Like you, I've been to a lot of concerts in the area, and I still contend that the KoC concert was my favorite ever. My biggest pet peeve is a concert that is too loud, but KoC kept it calm and soothing, as always :o) tiZom(2¢) 16:33, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Haha, no, that wasn't me- I'm not that cocky/annoying. I love the Paradise, and I've seen a few shows there (Feist also sticking out in my mind). As you used to, my girlfriend goes to BU, and last year (as a freshman) she lived in the building right behind the club, which had its good and bad points. KoC definitely kept everything soothing and sweet, but they also have so much humor. And when Erlend started dancing... oh man, that was something else. That was defintely up there with the best concerts I've ever seen, if not the best. Please, feel free to send pictures from that one, and thanks in advance. -- Kicking222 17:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair Use insertion
Hello there, juz wanna say thank you for helping to put the insertion for the image provided... I have been hounded by Elcda0 for no apparent reason that hewas so particular about the images uploaded... If you look into all the ANTM Cycle pages, etc... judges, winners, you would see that I have uploaded the image of the subject just to make the page look aesthetically nice. But he was so insistent which i am sure he complained to the administrator who gave me a last warning. I don;t know about this but i have always pride myself as a fair contributor and the images i have used are always copyright free... was wondering if you can help me rectify this problem. i have also been helping Stealthusa as wsell, but both of us are always tweened by Elcda0, please help! Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Apollolancer (talk • contribs) 20:41, 8 December 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Your ANTM image
I'm not an expert, but that image you uploaded from Cycle 1 most likely qualifies for fair use, since it's small, was used in advertisements, and (most importantly) was released by UPN.com as a promotional image. The issue JKelly and I are having with Apollolancer and Stealthusa is something different; those two are uploading the photoshoot pictures from cwtv.com, believing them to be in the public domain. Elcda0 18:16, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ahhhh, ok. The ones from the CoverGirl shoot? I saw that. Yes, that definitely needs to go. Let me know if you need me to back you up with that issue :o) tiZom(2¢) 18:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I have noticed you offer for adopting me but I don't think your interests mirror mine sorry.
[edit] Fair use on Olympic rings
The Olympic rings image is not tagged as fair use, and in fact is hosted on Commons. What is your basis for concluding that the use in articles in inconsistent with the licensing of the image? Guettarda 19:29, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- This was a big problem a while back. At the time, we were using Image:Olympic rings white.png, which was marked as Fair Use, but has since been deleted. Ed g2s and I had a brief edit war over it (See the page history of Template:MedalTop), and then when I read up on policy a little more, I realized that he was right. The Olympic logo is a copyrighted logo. As it is not a free image, it falls within Fair Use doctrine, and we should be using it sparingly, no matter how much the Olympic Committee allows it. There's a talk topic at Template talk:MedalTop#Olympic logos which has a little more info, should you need it.
- I have been removing this image sporadically for months now as a personal side-project. I hadn't noticed that the image that I'm removing now isn't licensed completely. Perhaps this will need to be revisited. tiZom(2¢) 20:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
If that's the case you really need to get it deleted from Commons. Content on Wikipedia may or may not be fair use, but content on Commons needs to be free. If the description is inaccurate, it really needs to be fixed, ASAP. Guettarda 20:33, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- I was afraid of that. But to be honest, it's really not that big of a deal. I mean, I've been removing almost all instances of it anyway. So all I have to do is finish removing all of these images and then move the image over to WP.
- Though, I'm confused that the second copyright template says that "the issue is being discussed on a policy level" but doesn't give a link. What do you think I should do? tiZom(2¢) 21:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

I am not having a good day with these things, forgot my signature twice, and now didn't copy your name right. *tsk* *tsk* I will fix that in a second, thanks for telling me. Prodego talk 23:10, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Actually I can't. It looks like I broke the userlist and now there is no way to log in to VP to fix it. That seems to be a pretty bad design flaw. So now no one can use VandalProof until AmiDaniel fixes it (and he has been gone 3 days). Now I am having a really bad day... Prodego talk 23:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:ADOPT
Hi there,
As a user looking to Adopt with the Adopt-a-User program, there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention, as well as request help with the backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.
You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.
Also numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.
Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.
So I hope you get adopting soon - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 15:26, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category for Template:Trademark
Just curious: why did you remove Category:Trademarked images from Template:Trademark? Also, what are you opinions on the template? --Iamunknown 02:45, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well I had just replaced it entirely with the Commons version. I suppose the removal of that template was inadvertant.
- Anyway... my thoughts? At first I thought it was very important. I mean, we can't go having people upload homemade product pictures like Image:Gameboy.jpg and release them into the public domain. To me, that just doesn't make sense. But someone told me that the pictures can belong to one person, the trademark to another. So I thought that we could just put this template on all the pictures like the one above. But then I realized that this is already covered... on the disclaimers that are listed at the bottom of every single Wikipedia page. So I guess it's really a moot point.
- I'd still like to see that extra warning though. What do you think? tiZom(2¢) 06:13, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- All the information I have about it is from you. :D I never read those disclaimers before, and I'm sure no one else has either. I do agree that placing it as an extra warning is a good idea. What I find disconcerting is that it is only a few trademarked images. Maybe we can reqeust an edit to {{logo}} to include {{trademark}} at the bottom? Also, I think I'm going to nominate Category:Trademarked images for deletion. It has been empty since you copied the template on 30 November, there really is no need for the category, and currently it is totally miscategorized in Category:Images by copyright status. --Iamunknown 07:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer. I could really use the help. The main reason I put the request up is that I found myself spending a lot of time reading "help" pages and not figuring out how to do something. I think it would help to have someone I can ask who would either know the answer or send me to the right place. malatesta 17:05, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright
OK, my first question. I am trying to upload an image for Bisbee Deportation and am confused by which category I should use as far as copyright licensing. I found a link on the page where the image is hosted: http://aquarius.library.arizona.edu/exhibits/bisbee/copyright.html which gives info on copyright. Can I upload one of these images? thanks malatesta 20:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Copyright stuff can get pretty involved, because people are very strict about it. Ready? Here goes:
- There are two kinds of images that we can use on WP: free images and unfree images.
-
- An image is free if the owner has given up the copyright, or if it is ineligible for copyright (it's produced by the government, it's really old, etc) - The full list of reasons are at Wikipedia:Copyrights and, in particular, Wikipedia:Public domain. It's pretty extensive, and I'd be happy to help you understand it if you need more help on that.
-
- This image, however, is unfree - the copyright is owned by University of Arizona. In order for us to lawfully use this image, we either need (1) permission from the copyright holder to re-license it (in most cases, they won't do this, because they lose a little control on the copyright...but seeing as how it's a University, it might be worth a shot), or (2) a good reason to use it regardless of copyright status. Wikipedia can, for example, use corporate logos, movie screenshots, album covers, etc. because we need to have the ability to demonstrate what the subject is, but there is nothing out there that could be used to replace it (e.g. you can't find a "free equivalent" to the NBC Peacock or the cover for The Dark Side of the Moon - it is what it is). This idea is called Fair use, and it allows Wikipedia to use a lot of copyrighted materials. There are, however, a bunch of restrictions. See the Fair Use page, or ask me with any questions.
- What is the image, exactly? Post a link to it, and I'll give you my input...
- Keep in mind that the goal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia of free content. So whenever possible, we should be using free images.
- Sorry for being so long-winded, but it took me quite a while to understand all this copyright stuff. Hope this helps a little. tiZom(2¢) 21:38, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Here's the link to the photo I want to use: http://www.library.arizona.edu/exhibits/bisbee/primarysources/photographs/deportation.html The caption says that it belongs to the Arizona Historical Society(AHS). I was rereading the copyright info on the page and it said that the images could be used for educational purposes. Could that be construed as meaing its ok for wikipedia? malatesta 17:27, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Link didnt copy correctly, but I want to use the 4th from the left.malatesta 17:29, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, sorry for the delay. I was in Montreal for the weekend, and was supposed to have internet access at the hotel... but let's not get into that :o)
- Regarding the image copyright problem. If it says that you can use it for educational purposes, unfortunately that will still not be enough for Wikipedia. The problem is that the main goal of WP is to create a free and open encyclopedia that anyone can use for any purpose. This means that somewhere down the line, someone may use it in a way that is not educational... and thereby going against the copyright owner's requests. This is why we use free images first, and use unfree ones only when it is necessary.
- I had a strikingly similar problem when I was working on a template for Olympic Medal winners (See, for example, the medal infobox on the page for Alexandre Despatie. It used to have a picture of the Olympic Rings because the Olympic Charter says you can use the rings for anything that promotes the Olympic Movement (which pages like this certainly did). However, the image was removed (diff) because somewhere down the road, someone might use our free encyclopedia in a way that does not promote the Olympic Movement.
- If I were you, I'd try to e-mail the copyright holders and get permission to license that image under the GFDL license - it's the one that allows the copyright holder to keep the most control over the image. Otherwise, you might want to try to find that image (...or something similar) in a link on this page: Wikipedia:Free image resources. Lots of historical stuff there. tiZom(2¢) 20:58, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VandalProof
I would like to use it but I usually edit while at work (they get what they pay for which is very little) and I doubt the IT fascists would like it. A question though, I tried to nominate for deletion Michael Aaron McGowan and added it to the articles for deletion page put it didn't look right after I did it. What did I do wrong?malatesta 21:24, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, here's what happened: When you nominate an article for deletion, you have to do three things. I'll go ahead and do it, and give you links to show you what I did:
- Put a message on the article's page. Instead of just adding a message, you'll want to put this deletion template at the top of the article page (not the talk page): {{subst:afd1}}. "afd1" is a template which is substituted. You don't need to know about either, but just know that when you type {{subst:afd1}} on a page, it will create a box that displays information about the deletion debate. See this diff - All I did was add {{subst:afd1}}.
- Create a new page to hold the discussion. This is done as a subpage of the AfD page. The previous step actually generated the link, all you need to do is follow it and start up the page. So go back to Michael Aaron McGowan, There will be a link in the deletion box that will say "this article's entry". Follow that link, and start this new discussion page with the text {{subst:afd2 | pg=PageName | cat=Category | text=Reason the page should be deleted}} ~~~~ Check this permalink - The text I started this page with was {{subst:afd2 | pg=Michael Aaron McGowan | cat=B | text=non-notable individual, reads almost like an advertisement}} ~~~~
- Transclude that page onto the AfD log page. Take the title of the page in step 2, and add to the log by placing {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Aaron McGowan}} at the bottom of the AfD log page. This takes the entire content of the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Aaron McGowan article (the discussion article), and includes it in the AfD log. (See this diff) Now, when you see the log, you'll see the deletion discussion. Now if you go to the log page, and try to edit that particular section, you'll actually go to the edit page for the subpage.
- In fact, a lot of pages in the Wikipedia: namespace operate like that, Like Wikipedia:Featured article candidates, Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates, etc. The benefit is that all of the edits (people supporting/opposing) go on individual pages, rather than the respective main page. It's just better organized that way.
- PS - You may want to check out the software that Mr. McGowan produced: Madeche vision. It seems like it might not be notable either, but I'll let you make that call, and decide if you want to nominate it. Let me know if you have any problems! tiZom(2¢) 07:01, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
How come this isn't working? └Jared┘┌talk┐ 22:14, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- ??? That's got me baffled... hold on, I'm going to try subst:'ing the generic userbox template. tiZom(2¢) 22:23, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
