Toshio Saeki is a fictional character from the Ju-on series of Japanese-horror movies. He was played by several child actors, being Ryôta Koyama in the original two V-Cinema movies, Yuya Ozeki in the theatrical movies and the first American remake, Ohga Tanaka in The Grudge 2 and Daiki Sawada in the short movie 4444444444.
He can be considered the second main character in the series, behind of Kayako, his mother. His first appearance was in Takashi Shimizu's short movie 4444444444 and his haunting goes all through the Ju-On series in a house in Nerima, Japan. He is one of the fulfillers of the ju-on curse, which states that when someone dies amidst rage and intense wrath, those feelings remain at the death site and kill whoever it touches.
His next appearance will be in the upcoming Ju-on: The Grudge 3 and The Grudge 3, although it is unknown who will be cast for the role, it is rumored that Ohga Tanaka from The Grudge 2 might return to reprise her role as Toshio. He can be considered an icon of modern horror movies, having appeared in 6 films (with 2 more to be released) and 1 short and even being parodied in the 2006 comedy Scary Movie 4.
[edit] History and Origin
Toshio was born to Takeo and Kayako Saeki, a normal Japanese couple residing in Nerima City, Tokyo.
He had a teacher named Kobayashi in school who happened to be an old affair of his mother Kayako's. The old passion apparently came back when she knew about this, and began to see Kobayashi more frequently. To make things worse, her husband Takeo discovered a journal where she wrote some thoughts from his teenage years, several of them being love declarations to Kobayashi. The man became blind with anger and jealousness, and attacked Kayako when she came home. He actually thought that Toshio was not his son, but Kobayashi's. After killing his wife, he got Toshio from his room - where he was drawing in the floor with his pet cat - and beat him up, later drowning him in the bathtub. He even killed the cat with an utility knife, and buried it in the dirt path aside the house. He put Toshio's body in the closet and sealed it with duct tape.
This was the beginning of the curse that laid upon that house, in which the ghosts of Kayako, Toshio and Takeo (who was killed by Kayako soon after her murder) attack people who enter in, re-enacting the murders and following the victims wherever they may go.
It is believed that Toshio and the cat, Mar, got merged and are the same spirit. In the movies, the cat always appears as an omen to the presence of Toshio or the iminent death of a victim. Toshio has the "hability" to appear and disappear from anywhere, usually switching rooms and even houses. Differently from his mother (although she is heard talking, albeit briefly, in the first Ju-on movie), Toshio actually can talk, even in his ghost form. When the death of someone is iminent, he can meow and shriek like a cat, and this move generally precedes a possession or the coming of Kayako.
