Tourism in Denmark
Tourists in Denmark mainly consist of people from neighboring countries Sweden, Norway and Germany. Though the main attractions differ greatly.
Denmark has plenty of sandy beaches which attract mainly German tourists. While Swedish and Norwegian tourists often come for the relative metropolitan Copenhagen, or as for many young Scandinavians the cheap prices and easy access of beer and alcohol is the main attraction.
As the worlds oldest kingdom and the home of Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark is often marketed as a "Fairytale country". Previously this image was aimed mainly toward Asian tourists, but was recently expanded to most of the world in relation with the Hans Christian Andersen anniversary in 2005. This has been a tremendous success and even news networks such as CNN described Denmark as a "Fairytale country" during the Cartoon Controversy in 2006.
[edit] Danish culture
The Danes always emphasize the Danish word "hygge". Not an entirely unique concept but one Danes consider their own and are very proud of. This term means spending quality time with family and friends, in a relaxed atmosphere.
[edit] Danish cities
Copenhagen with more than one million citizens, and more than 3 million people living within one hours drive, is the largest city in Scandinavia. Many Swedes take the trip over Oresund Bridge to Copenhagen to shop on Strøget, and many cruise ships stop here on their way to Baltic Sea.
In 2004 Copenhagen Region had 136 hotels with a total of 4.9 million nights spend. There were 250 cruise liners calling at at Copenhagen Port with more than 350,000 passengers.
