Trends in Biochemical Sciences

Trends in Biochemical Sciences (ISSN: 0968-0004), more commonly referred to as TiBS, was the first ever scientific monthly review journal to be published (first edition, January 1976). TiBS was the brainchild of Elsevier-Holland and the International Union of Biochemists [now the IUBMB (International Union of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists)]. It is published by Elsevier and aimed at academic, industrial and applied scientists as well as students.
Upon its launch, the magazine style of TiBS – short reviews on topical advances in biochemical research – was unique among science journals of the time. It rapidly gained popularity, and remains among the most highly cited journals within biochemistry. The TiBS formula was subsequently expanded, with Elsevier launching 13 more Trends journals covering other areas of biomedical science. The publication of mini-review- and review-style articles are now standard in almost all science journals.
The format of TiBS consists of two main article types: mini-review style Review articles, and Opinion articles, which provide authors with greater scope to present a hypothesis and personal perspective on a topic. Both article types are written in an accessible style by leading researchers and aim to cover advances in understanding and emerging themes within biochemistry and molecular biology. Shorter news-style Research Focus articles are also included, and Historical Perspectives, which present personal accounts of key developments in the history of biochemical and molecular biology research, make occasional appearances.
Topics covered include:
• Biophysics
• Biochemistry
• Molecular biology
• Proteomics
• Structural biology
• Bioinformatics
• Systems biology
• Mathematical modelling
