The University of Jammu was established in 1969 beside the Tawi River. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs; it confers honoraray degrees to persons of exceptional calibre. It also affiliates and recognizes colleges.

It is India's first university to be awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification. It was awarded four stars by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee.

The university has thirty three (33) teaching departments offering graduate, masters, M.Phil and doctoral programmes. The graduate level courses are also offered in the various colleges spread across the Jammu Region. In addition the university also provides the education through its distance education based courses.

The university has a well equipped central library that caters the needs of the students of the university as well as others. The library has over 350,000 books and electronic media collection as well. Recently the university library has been renamed as Dhanvantri Library.
[edit] IT Facilities
The IT Facility are also provided with the aim to support the university's learning, teaching, and research activities. University has acquired two-VSAT connectivitywith bandwidth of 512 kbit/s each total 1 Mbit/s through Insat 2DT and Insat 3C from Ernet India, under UGC – Infonet programme. From 5th December 2006, university campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled.

From 15th September 2006 the university has changed the timings from 9.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. The university will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
