[edit] A quick question about Wikipedia:WikiProject Meteorology
I may be mistaken, but you seem to be familiar with the bot which updates the lists of assessed articles for wikiprojects. If I wanted to start assessing articles which fall under Wikipedia:WikiProject Meteorology , how could I get Mathbot to start making tables and all that fancy stuff that happens to the other projects? We already have a Template:Meteorology for assessing (which I just modified to accept importance rankings), what else needs to be done? -Runningonbrains 01:46, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bupropion
Martin, could you have a look at my edits at bupropion (I have tried to revert some POV sentences of User talk:62.56.69.184 & User talk:62.56.55.227, and removed some links/e-mail addresses to external sources), and the reversions of that by 62.56.55.227 (which already are reverted again, since the section was a duplicate). I think that in the first series of edits from me I gave the person the possibility to create an own page for the Zyban Action Group, but I feel that was not appreciated. (The order of the page may still be a bit too difficult, hopping from subject to subject). Thank you! --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:12, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Looks OK to me, I think you did the right thing. Often the flow of articles gets spoilt by this sort of thing, and duplication creeps in. Before we plastered it with notices and removed lots of inappropriate links, the alcohol page was always getting paragraphs added (in random places) on the effects of drinking too much, which rightly belonged on ethanol, alcoholic beverage, effect of alcohol on the body or alcoholism. [edit] Next release version
Martin, thanks for your note. I saw your recent posts on the team's main talk page. Sorry we misunderstood each other earlier. Maurreen 17:14, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 0.5 next steps
And thanks for your note! Would you mind if I move the discussion about next steps for 0.5 to the 0.5 page? I think that would be more organized and help keep pages from getting too long. Maurreen 17:23, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'd like to wait a few days, at least, in case anyone want to comment, and then move it if necessary. I posted it on the main page for two reasons:
- We may need to set up a team for pre-publication work in general - not needed so far, but they could handle that part of the project for EVERY release. Do you think it's a good idea? The skills and knowledge are very different from what's gone before.
- The pre-publication work needed will hopefully bring in people who have not been much involved up to this point. Most 1.0 people tend to either focus on articles/assessment/review (as we do) or on the end-product stuff (offline viewer, scripts for cleanup, etc.) - the latter folks need to be woken up after many years asleep! I plan to post a few messages on user talk pages soon.
- This stuff has wider implications beyond 0.5 on what we do next, for people who may not have followed 0.5 much so far.

[edit] Chat help?
Martin, I am trying out IRC, but I can't find the 1.0 channel from freenode. Do you have any advice? Maurreen 20:02, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind. I think I was looking in the wrong place. I think I found it. Maurreen 20:10, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

- Thank you for the note, especially for the time clarification. Maurreen 20:22, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Yes .. but
OK, I was now looking through the pages, say I sign up for Core-topics. Then I get to a list of pages. What then, I pick one, say Sleep, I read it, and .. ?? Sorry .. it is a bit strange to get a start here. Could you help me out on that? Cheers! --Dirk Beetstra T C 21:25, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- I had a look at sleep, IMO that looks quite OK, some cleanup would be nice. I have added the template, marked it on the list. So that is all OK. But do I do anything with 'remarks' that I have after the review? Things to get it into a 'publishable version' or so. Or are we getting another round, where a version is locked for further addition, but can only be cosmetically altered by a group of people that do nothing but style-cleanups? --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:34, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] A question
I am now involved in at least 2 controversies (Aspartame and Venlafaxine). For both I seem to find some 'resistance' against my decision to split the controversy out of the main article. I know the comparison is not completely fair, but I'd like to hear an opinion: water (molecule) is a page about the chemical compound water, such a page should give an introduction, some properties, tell about history, what its good sides are, and what its bad sides are. One of the bad sides is that people drown in it. So in that line of thinking, should there be a huge section about drowning in water? Or is there something completely flawed in my comparison? --Dirk Beetstra T C 21:31, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'll try and help, but time is getting limited for me now. I should be able to post a few comments, and yes- I agree with your approach to solving the problem! We often find that controversial or popular sections balloon out to dominate the article out of all proportion (take a look at the Dow Chemical article before a couple of us worked on it in June!). I must confess, I try to keep my head down as much as possible with these things...! Walkerma 21:43, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm just trying to get my mind straight on these things. In a way I like the discussions behind this, a good training for logical reasoning. But sometimes I need someone to have a look at my reasoning, just to see it is not flawed. I'll manage it, when there are too many people disagreeing, I will call it a loss, bring things back to the previous level, and keep an eye on too obvious vandalism. The main trouble is that sometimes you 'fight' against people that are emotional about the subject, or who do not see my approach, and stick to their own. But glad to hear you keep an eye on it! --Dirk Beetstra T C 22:00, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 0.5 reviews
Martin, thanks for your note. I'm working on the articles, but there is no way I can make the commitment you ask for. Besides trying to develop my real life, I prefer quality over speed for this project. Maurreen 21:51, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Soil article update
You nominated the soil article for Version 0.5 and, not coincidently, it has since been improved. It is now listed as done with WikiProject Science, a Class-A article with WikiProject Soil, and submitted as an FAC. Thanks for the prod motivation. -- Paleorthid 21:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Completing Version 0.5 reviews
Thanks everything! You are the motor or the whole project. I just help wherever I can. Today, or tomorrow I'll have a deep look at that to-do page and review my set nonmination of genetic disorders. And try to complete the Wikiproject Council's first scientific lists. Good work! :) NCurse work 09:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Laboratory glassware
Hi Martin
I saw the changes you made to the section on cleaning glassware, which you have commented as "modern practice in the UK and US." Respectfully, I feel that what is described now on the page is more of what "should be done" than what actually is done, even in the UK/US, Worldwide View notwithstanding.
In reality, depending on the chemistry you are doing, stuff like hydrogen peroxide and aqua regia are simply necessary, rather than mere hang-ons to a glorious antiquated age. For example, I can't think ofhow else to remove palladium black from sintered frits than aqua regia. Also, it is hard to scrub an NMR tube with a nylon brush - the sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide mixture is one of the better ways.
Hope you can look at the article again. Thank you! --Rifleman 82 12:45, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your compliments, though I may have hardly the experience you do.
I do see your point about the difference in writing for the lay-reader and writing the knowledgeable worker. I am surprised, though, that you have seen the use of chromic acid but not hydrogen peroxide. It is my understanding that hydrogen peroxide/sulfuric acid is supposed to be a safer alternative to chromic acid!
As an aside, it irritates me that due to the other drying agent, and possible messy wikipedia disambiguating work, I have taken to calling what we chemists usually call drying agents as desiccants. Any comments? --Rifleman 82 19:24, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikicat mention
Martin-
Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't subscribe to wikipedia-l before because of the volume but I guess I should start :) I should point out that Wikicite/Wikicat is not completely coded yet, but the functionality is coming along and will not take too much time to finish off. The main stumbling blocks right now are organizational, though, particularly how to integrate with other projects like WikiAuthors and how to conform to underlying infrastructure like Wikidata. I have already had discussions with Erik Moeller, GerardM, and Lars, though, so we are not totally in the dark about what the other is doing :) I will try responding on the list if there remains anything useful for me to add.
On a different note, I noticed that you unfortunately dropped out of the Special Projects meeting this weekend just as the topic of static content was being discussed. I brought up the issue of validation/"1.0", but unfortunately not too much was discussed in this vein.

[edit] Philbin review
Thanks for your comments and a fresh perspective with Regis Philbin. I agree with most of them, but the problem is I didn't write most of the sections that you questioned. I did not want to be "in charge" of the article and "own" it, so I made those edits stand. But I will look over the article as you suggested, especially the References section. (I'm still familiarizing myself with the cite web template.) Besides, if it doesn't pass GA review the first time, I can learn a lot from the feedback. So I'm taking my time for nomination (if I end up nominating the article). Tinlinkin 05:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Something like this?
Hi Martin, I have been playing a little with templates. For now I called it (but feel free to move it around to or something. But what about:

I just splashed in some text, it does need a lot of tweaking, but feel free to play around with the parameters, and see what effect it gives (the only problem for now is when people set the 'LangUse' to senseless values, maybe there is a way of doing something about that .. have to look that up). And of course, if you think it is a good plan, feel free to adjust the wording
Only language has been programmed now, I guess other options (and this one as well) would need some discussion, but some issues from the manual of style could be addressed here, and maybe people will actually do that, without us having to take care of it. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] wikipedia 0.5/1.0
hey, lookin over the 1.0 page. i like what i see. keep up the good work. i'm still trying to untangle everything to see how i can help (it seems like a really confusing process that isn't all quite setup), but rest assured i want to help make this happen. thanks for being so persistent. :) JoeSmack Talk 16:35, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- you know, im still having trouble grokking the 0.5/1.0 project pages. can you make like a flowchart or project tree? i think others have the same comprehension problem, and it would really help clear things up. JoeSmack Talk 18:28, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image in Lithium Aluminium Hydride
Howdy! Another editor has brought up a concern about the accuracy of an image that you added the Lithium Aluminium Hydride article on a discussion about that article's GA status. The image in question is Image:LAH rxns.png
If you could clarify things for us on the GA review talk page, we would greatly appreciate your time. Thanks! Agne 16:51, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that up. Appreciate it. :) Agne 15:42, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikisort software
The wikisort bot is _finished_. However, the perl script has a strange error, and I don't know if it will work. I also can't run the bot on my computer, so someone else in the wikisort project (or another editorial team member) will have to run it. The bot requires pywikipedia, and the source code is here.

[edit] Chemical Sources
Hi Martin. I have posted a post on bugzilla, try to get the Wikipedia:Chemical sources up and running. I tried to make a beginning by running a wikipedia on my computer, and start typing some php myself (well, copying the booksources page). The entry and my attempt can be found at 7364. Now hope that I get some help with that. Thought I let you know. See you around! --Dirk Beetstra T C 22:56, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. It'd be great if you can get something more sophisticated. Walkerma 01:42, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Some days ago I posted a patch (yes .. I have it running locally, works like a charm!!! I am now using it myself on a regular basis) to get this functionality started. For now one can search on: CAS, name, formula, EINECS, CHEBI, PubChem, SMILES, InChI, ATC-code, DrugBank, KEGG and RTECS. My question now is: do I miss some here (otherwise I can re-upload a new version of the patch). Unfortunately the patch is not yet applied, I'd like to see that soon (no clue how long it takes .. I have the feeling they are not really keen on it, since it is not 'for the general public' ..). We'll have to wait, I think.
- I may be on low gear for some time, I am moving house this weekend, and I don't know if I will have access to internet from home then, so I might only edit while in the lab. See you around! --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:05, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

We're having a debate with scientists over at Wikipedia_talk:Good_article_candidates#Discussion_on_criteria_changes on our new requirement for inline citations for GA articles. They are asking if things that are common knowledge to physicists should be cited? I don't feel I know enough to answer and would love your opinion since you're a scientist :-) --plange 03:05, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The article on parabens is all one sided repeated, continuos POV pushing.
Hello,
There are two different editors which are both erasing entire sections of this article. Please oversee the history page and article.
I am a new user that does not know what to do in this situation. I think removing large sections of the parabens article may be vandalism at worst and POV pushing at best. This article needs serious arbitration.

[edit] WPCD2
Is this a list of all the version 0.5 articles to date?
- Yes, plus all the WPCD ones and GA/FA ones. I hope nearly 5000 but haven't checked for duplicates yet
Once we have that list finalised, I'd be delighted if you could put it through your script!
- If the script works straight off thats easy. However I don't know if someone has meddled with format of WP since so could be easy or hard. Hard is bad news as not time to work on it.
I have a few questions:
What kind of "dump" do you use. People keep asking me that sort of thing about your CD, and I really have no clue....! I barely know what a dump is, I'm afraid!
- Script just produces HTML pages in folders which get read by PC browser.
Can we include lots of redirects easily? Thinks like Atlanta → Atlanta, Georgia.
- Not yet but it is worth getting a list
What tags etc are removed by your scripts and what are left in?
- got a list but most go out
How do you handle images? Do you have a script to check for copyrights in images?
- At present we only take thumbnails and have no automated check for image copyrights. We try to do manually
Can we set up a basic set of categories to search by? (I noticed Brasilia appears in General knowledge on WPCD, where other capitals appear under places- we'll have to be careful!)
- Brussels is under veg too. The categorisation at present is done by volunteers I am afraid
Is there any way of attaching basic metadata to articles? Even if not for this version, could it be done in the future? I'm thinking of things like assessments, GA/FA tags.
- Yes, not hard. Why would you want to?
We'll probably have to chat on the phone again sometime soon, I want to hear about SOS release #2.
[edit] Re: Milestone
I apologize; it was an oversight on my part. I had seen the news on the page and had intended to place it, but somehow overlooked it before I started writing the article on the results of the Board elections. I will make sure it's covered this week. My apologies again. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:35, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WP:CITE Talk page
Howdy - don't know if you've been following it, but I'm sure it won't come as a surprise that the issue is still being discussed (what needs to be cited) and I'm feeling like it's not really getting anywhere. Was wondering if you and some of the other seasoned editors/admins could weigh in? I'm thinking that someone with your experience and clout will help cut through the issue and help bring it into focus. Right now, everyone's talking in circles... I'm not advocating for a particular side, BTW, just that I respect your opinion and so think whatever you make of the situation can only be good for WP, especially given your scientific background. --plange 00:39, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- I was trying to keep my head down - I'm a coward like that! It is important, though, and so I read it through (yes all of it!) and added my 2c. I just hope I don't fan the flames! Walkerma 05:53, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you! Sorry about asking you to stick your neck out :-) I also asked Kirill and Sandy (hence Kirill's post) as you guys have a lot of respect in the community (and are involved in 3 major projects impacted by WP:CITE (MILHIST, FAR and 1.0)) and understand the nuances best! I don't think it'll fan the flames, I think it was a good dose of water, actually. I still feel kinda like a newbie and didn't feel like I was able to bring things to a consensus. Now we can hash things out back at GA on implementation. Sorry that our GA criteria change caused such a ruckus! --plange 06:02, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Don't apologise! I have been very impressed with your "newbie" contributions, which always come across to me as reasonable (we also appreciate your work on bios!). As for the ruckus, although it occasionally got silly I think in general the discussion was useful and important, and it was much more reasonable than most heated discussion on WP! If we never debated these policies they would become stale, and in fact such discussions are often cited (that word again?) by outsiders as evidence that we take these issues seriously. Walkerma 06:10, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Cool, good to know! Cheers :-) --plange 06:20, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Assessment request
Hi Walkerma, the member for films is currently inactive and you are of the few others interested in assesment. So here is my request. I was working lately on improving (as film) a mixed novel-film article (The Magic Christian), which had, since years, started to lean on the film side. Then another user asked me to start a separate stub on the novel. Not having done any of this before, I created The Magic Christian (novel) stub (including an old version when it was still in the novel phase), which is currently being worked on. Then I created The Magic Christian (film) where I placed the developing film article. The original page is now the disambiguation page, which also contains the past edit history of the original article. I still haven't figured out the exact way and consequences of changing the main title of an article, redirecting, etc. The original article had in its discussion page a template for film w/ "Stub" status. Without knowing that it is only for the assesment team to do this, I added "Start" status in the film's template in the discussion page. I think that the article may actually be of "B" status now. If I am addressing the right person, can you please make a reassesment, or let me know to whom I should make the request? Hoverfish 18:38, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I took a look at the pages you mentioned. I'm not familiar enough with the film to be able to assess it really well. I'd guess that it's either a good Start-Class or very basic B-Class, not because it's a bad article but just because I could imagine that a featured article on the topic would cover the movie in a lot more depth and from lots of angles. I'm not sure what you mean by "the member for films is currently inactive" - it seems that Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Films has a lot of activity these days, and I'm sure someone from there could answer your request better than myself! Failing that, talk to the Beatles WikiProject, they were one of the original test projects when we started the bot, and they could help too. Good luck, Walkerma 03:52, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your time and explanations. I am also helping in Films with Listing. When I feel I have covered more gaps in the article, I will ask in the Beatle's film project, as you say. Hoverfish 13:34, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Organic chemistry
Response to Organic chemistry at User talk:Bryn C:
- Hi Walkerma and thanks for the courteous welcome. Those links you provided were certainly interesting - I was aware of the Jmol Project, however I did not realize it was so far along. Without question those applets are a far superior alternative. That said, I haven't created any new animations since the beginning of July, partially because they were met with mixed reactions. The community reactions you cite are anecdotal, but conclusive enough for me. I hope I haven't caused too much of a ruckus - I will do my homework before I step on any more toes. I look forward to working with you. Regards, Bryn C (t/c) 05:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Coincidence?
I think it goes a bit beyond the 0.5 & assessment issue, actually. Many smaller/less prominent projects are, after seeing the various rating pages and everything linked there, suddenly being introduced into all the bells & whistles that other projects have adopted, and deciding to take some of them for their own use. There's definitely a great deal of viral spread going on here (including code being copied, bugs and all, across dozens of projects), and I think it will ultimately be even more successful in bringing people onboard than the older WVWP method of leaving messages was. [edit] Lithium flame test
Yes, you're right about the test - I wasn't thinking at all when I added that picture to chemical reaction. I think I'll leave it to you to fix it up and add some better media to article. Thanks for letting me know, I'll try to apply a little critical thinking next time I add an image :) Richard001 03:54, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Calcium Carbonate
I agree the article still needs more work. I'd like to know what your ideas are for revamping it. One thing that stands out that needs to be fixed is the sentence that purports to specify a test for calcium carbonate. Seeing something fizz when HCl is dropped on it doesn't identify it as anything in particular. Other than a flame/spectrograph test, I can't think of anything that tests specifically for the presence of calcium as the cation in a carbonate sample. But I'll hunt around for a strictly hemical test. The article also needs some discussion of crystal structures and the optical bifringence of the calcite crystal. A mention that chalk and marble are both micro-crystaline forms of calcite would also be informative. Anyway, I'm happy to collaborate. Let me know where you want to go with this article. [edit] Multiplication scale (WP:WVWP)
Once WP:WVWP is almost finished, articles could be put into the release version like this:
- Quality:
- FA-Class is 8
- A-Class is 7
- GA-Class is 6
- B-Class is 5
- Start-Class is 4
- Stub-Class is 3
- Importance:
- Articles that are needed for completeness will have their importance rating doubled
- Top-importance is 8
- High-importance is 6
- Mid-importance is 4
- Low-importance is 2
The rating of an article is its quality rating times its importance rating. Articles which have a rating of 20 will automatically be included in the release version.
NOTE: the minimum rating can be increased to get better articles (at the expense of quantity) or decreased to get more articles (at the expense of quality). See the WVWP talk page for more information about WVWP and the release version.
Any thoughts? Eyu100 23:43, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- Using a scale like that one pretty much guarantees any articles tagged as "Low-importance" would be left out, and "Top-importance" articles that are useless would be included. Titoxd(?!?) 01:02, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] iPod article for Wikipedia CD (version 0.5)
Hi, on 11 October 2006, you tagged the iPod article for inclusion to the Wikipedia CD (version 0.5). I just wanted to ask which version of the article will be used? The iPod article tends to get vandalised a lot, and the latest version, as of 15 October 2006, is a bit bloated and has a few inaccuracies. Also, what is the deadline for it to be copied onto the CD? --IE 18:15, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- If you think a particular version is the best choice for us to use, please let me know and I'll tag that version for inclusion.
- Hi, I think this version here is best. It's ID is 78335752 and it's from 28 September 2006. It's concise, fairly accurate, and has all the info about the recent iPod updates of September 2006. Plus, it has been copy edited a lot. Also, I will try to copy-edit and trim down the current version of the article, since that is your preference for article selection --IE 18:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. The amount of vandalism the iPod article (and even its talk page) is getting is now becoming too much. Can we get it semi-protected for a while? It's getting difficult to improve it when bits and pieces become deleted/changed after editing. If it can't be protected, do you have suggestions on how to make it easier to edit? --IE 11:25, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Hello. This version here is quite good (ID=97402239, from 30 December 2006). It's the one I tagged for the peer review. However, the main image at the top doesn't appear now because the image was moved to Wikimedia commons (by User:HereToHelp) with a different filename (Image:IPod 5G, nano 2G, shuffle 2G.jpg becomes Image:Image-IPod 5G, nano 2G, shuffle 2G.jpg). Also, this version doesn't have any info on the recent announcement of the iPhone. What is the deadline for submission to CD? I would like to tag a more recent version, but the current revision needs lots of copy-editing.--IE 09:29, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bot :)
Hi - I'll look into writing this over the start of next week, and perhaps the weekend. Once that's done, I'll put in on WP:BRFA. In the meantime, please get in touch if you have any questions, and if I have some when writing the bot, I'll ask you! (PS - the bot will run under the User:MartinBotII account (most likely)). Thanks -- Martinp23 18:16, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi - I can only apologise hugely for this - I've been suffering from some sort of food poisoning since Monday evening (when I planned to write your bot), and have, since then, been unable to properly program (ie - all I've been doing is simple stuff). I'll try to look through it today, but I'm afraid that for actually programing it, I may have to wait untiI get better :) Martinp23 09:41, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again - looking over the proposal again, it looks to be very possible. Can I just clarify on one or two things (please bear with me - I may not be working properly!) - is the bot to just make the list of articles above a ceratin quality and importance, and mark out any problems (making a table, for example?). Also, will it run off a category to check, or another sort of list? Sorry if I'm being dense! Martinp23 09:55, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for your reply - I see what needs doing now :) I have just one further question (for now) - can you give me an example of a "Wikiproject Set" as you mentioned on my talk page? The real question I have is: are these categories, and if so, re the any existing ones for me to test with (without editting the wiki)? Thanks -- Martinp23 12:03, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again - I ran the bot off the chemistry categories, without using MathBot's output (though I may do so in the next iteration). I also used the multiplication formula for the articles - I'm happy to implement a simple additon formula if required, though from my perspective (in terms of running on my system), I consider it to make a negligable difference (it should be fine too on the server, which is a lot slower, but should cope well). In the table I output, I had the articles arranged in order of number of points. For now, I haven't put the articles in categories, as I'd prefer to get permission from WP:BRFA before making hundreds of edits! You can see the table in the bot's user area here. For the date there, I'll probably take it from the mathbot output, or ask Oleg how I can do it. I have a system in place for the comments section to list tags on the articles - could you give me a provisional list of "bad words" to look for? I hope this rough starter run is OK - thanks Template:Emot -- Martinp23 22:03, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- For the bad things, I was thinking of things like tags on the article primarily, and perhaps weasel words (or better - weasel phrases). There are probably other things which are better, but I can't think of them right now! Thanks -- Martinp23 11:11, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- To identify any errors, I ran the bot on the other worklists you gave me - the results are linked from the makeshift User:MartinBotII/WP1.0. The only problem I found was incorrect placement of the reviews - ie on the pages themselve, but I've fixed this where I've found it. Thanks - Martinp23 17:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi - I'll be happy to attend :) The problem I was finding (and fixing) with some articles and images was that the actual assessment template was being posted on the article (in one case) or on the image (in two cases - both the same image). I hope the first case is more rare, but I'll program the program (?) to produce an error log of this sort of thing, rather than dying. Thanks, Martinp23 12:00, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] distillation
Hi Martin. Is it me, or are batch distillation and continuous distillation two different types of distillation, or are they two different types of industrial distillation? In my feeling, it is the former. Could you please have a look (also the histories and talk pages, I already tried to change some things, and to explain some things). Cheers! --Dirk Beetstra T C 21:32, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Quick reply, as I have to explain NMR to 20 eager students very soon. I would say BOTH. They are indeed two different modes of distillation in general. However, the distinction is usually only made by chemical engineers talking about industrial processes, and continuous distillation is rarely used outside an industrial setting. The only time I have seen something like continuous in the lab is when peopl set up the rotary evaporator with the material being slowly sucked in (Buchi has a tube for that), useful when you have 20 litres to distil! Having said that, microreactors are changing everything, and soon we may all be using continuous distillations in the lab! Walkerma 16:23, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- My thoughts exactly (I also used the rotary evaporator example, earlier). I am trying to get the level down to say, high school student. The entrance level in all cases is quite high, the first picture on the fractional distillation page is quite a difficult example of continuous distillation, while I think that it should be written in 'simple' language. Moreover, parts of the continuous distillation can be used when explaining GC and HPLC (the HETP and Van Deemter equation are related to the plates in a distillation column). I could use some help, or a watching eye, every now and then. Cheers. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:03, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Weekly
Heya,
You may or may not be aware of the newly-created Wikipedia Weekly podcast, which has been running for two episodes with a third on its way for next week. Episode 3 will be focusing on offline Wikipedia content such as Wikipedia-CD and TomeRaider. It was suggested that you might have something to say on the matter, as an involved contributor to Wikipedia 0.5.
Would you like to come on to talk about the project? The basic requirements would be a computer with Skype and a microphone, although it'd be best if you also had a reasonably fast internet connection. We'd probably be recording at around 10am UTC, although that might be "oh-my-god o'clock" territory depending on your location and schedule.
You can get back to us by leaving a message here, leaving a message on my userpage, or dropping in to #wikipediaweekly on Freenode. --Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 09:08, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks for the message on my talk page - I'm glad to hear that you're now equipped with a microphone and such. Unfortunately, we still don't know when we're going to be able to cover it, since Tawker (who has been trying to involve Matt Swann of Wikipod in the podcast) won't be around for the next two episodes. On the one hand, this gives us a long lead-time to develop what we want to say, but it also means that we might need to hold off on talking to you for another couple of weeks.
- It'd be great to talk to you personally, although I'm not sure who of the others would be best to include as well. Since we're limited to five simultaneous speakers (ie, five in the conversation at once), it might be tricky to invite a second or third guest, although not necessarily inconceivable if we can grab a hold of the necessary hardware. We'll limit it you just you for now, and see how we go, shall we? :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 04:42, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- "Up to ten" was before we found out that all computers with non-dual core and non-Intel processors are limited to just five, for marketing reasons - I should really change that. :) When will the English and Polish releases be coming out, by the way? Would it be worth trying to time an interview to be around the same date as the release? Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 05:10, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- That's ideal! If we can catch you either on or within a few days of release (even just ISO release, rather than the published version) we could talk about your expectations and so on, and be breaking news; if we can't, then there's always the option of a "one week down the track" followup. :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 05:33, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] natural disaster
Hi, I had a request from someone who did a major revamp on natural disaster, an article that I demoted from A to B class in course of the V0.5 project. He asked if I think it is up to A-class again, but reading it, I think I need a second opinion (apart from it being in 0.5). Somehow it feels a bit like the article should be called 'natural hazard', because that is where the main part of the article is about (maybe coud use a bit risk assessment). And I do miss a lot of things, e.g. relation to how people concieve a natural disaster (decision of their God(s), e.g.). Could you have a look?
Talking about it, now that I have a copy of [chemistry.poolspares.com/wiki/special:chemicalsources special chemicalsources] running (waiting for reviews, and adapting the code while doing so), I could maybe help a bit more with V0.5. Where can I be of help? Cheers! --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:47, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

- Sounds like a good idea to me, though I don't know enough about the technical issues to be sure! I'd say that if we could get Emmanuel (Kelson on fr), Polimerek (on pl), Wizzy and yourself all to pool resources there then it would be great. I like the compatibility with Concurrent Versions System. If we can get the Germans to help too, even better - they are the experts in this area, but we don't seem to have good contacts with them. In the meantime we can share things at m:Static version tools, we should be doing this anyway IMHO; I see Wizzy and Emmanuel have already begun to post there. [edit] Wikipedia Weekly (again)
Heya! We're now up to recording for episode 5, and we're finally in a position to talk to you about Wikipedia 0.5. Would you be able to nominate some times, preferably in UTC, when you would be available to talk to us about it? That said, when you do think the launch will be? Thanks! :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 10:37, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I originally placed this on your user-page, not here. Apparently my brain no worky at one in the morning. Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 01:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- Hey, thanks for the reply! Generally we record things all at once for simplicity, but always do the interviews first in order to make it easier on our guests. On the other hand, since it's done out of order anyway, there's no trouble in recording the interview at a totally separate time, and we'll be releasing it at some point on Monday (my time). It would probably be a group discussion between you, User:Fuzheado, possibly User:1ne or User:Tawker (the latter likely won't be around) and I, plus User:Buickid if we can get him. Hope that suits you.
-
- Anyway, this might be easiest to organise if you come on to either IRC or Skype whenever you're ready (or an hour or two before), so we can work out precisely when we'll be able to record. If you add me to your Skype contact list, username "RandyWang", I can add you to a running chat we've been having in which we organise everything. Alternatively, there's always email (daveydweeb@gmail.com) or IRC (#wikipediaweekly). Thanks! --Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 23:43, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bioguide articles
Hello, I noticed one of your postings on a talk page re: the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress and saw that you are working on 1.0, etc. I wanted to let you know that I've created a whole bundle of articles that are basically copy-and-pastes of Bioguide articles with some formatting to bring them in line with WP style standards (plus the addition of categories, templates etc.) These articles are usually short, but they are also usually 100% verified by the Bioguide, so they are reliably "good articles." All U.S. Congressmen are notable, but of course, not all are notable enough to be put into a CD release or a print edition, so I wouldn't expect that every one of these articles would be graded and selected for inclusion. However, I just wanted to let you know of the presence and generally consistent quality of these articles. I love the 1.0 project and wish that I could do more to contribute - it's truly the future of WP. Regards, Paul 19:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- Woah, totally forgot that we did in fact collaborate on Dow. The Rally went superbly well - I didn't make it to Mongolia but I got as far as Tashkent, which, frankly, was good enough for me. I heartily congratulate your progress on the 0.5/1.0 project - please keep me in mind if you think I can be of use to it in the future. Paul 20:17, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Biglist complete
The final list has been assembled from the category. The category might not have updated everything, so add anything to the biglist that is missing. Otherwise, we shouldn't need to update it. It would be a better idea to use a bot to check for discrepancies so we can do something bots can't do. Eyu100(t|fr|Version 1.0 Editorial Team) 03:28, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'll try and update the big list tonight. Do you have a bot we can use for the comparison? Walkerma 03:46, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

-
- Do you have a list of important redirects? It would improve navigation a lot. Offline search could be very easy or not depending on what software you can reasonably assume a user has (we assumed just a browser). We've run a few tests and decided a live search isn't practical for someone running it but a keyword (pre-indexed) search seemed more likely ? --BozMo talk 09:08, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

- I do think this is important, but I do not know how to get those redirects. For instance, on BozMo's original CD China was not on the list - it was People's Republic of China. Without a search, I was stuck. Wizzy…☎ 10:52, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One thing which bugs me about Wikipedia
Is the way that things which have been discussed and decided sensibly get over-turned over by some developer without any kind of answerability. See 1 for example. I am torn between thinking "who cares" and thinking "how dare they". Hmm. --BozMo talk 21:09, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- I'd guess that the Mediawiki software probably has it in by default, and when someone upgraded the Wikipedia software running Wikipedia they just forgot to disable it! So I wouldn't ascribe any dark motive to the secret developers' cabal, I expect it was just an honest mistake! By the way, how are things going on WPCD2? Can I give you a ring this week to talk about this and Version 0.5? We may have some software useful to you (still a bit up in the air as of today). Walkerma 21:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

- So is this the autocratic developers trampling roughshod over the masses? If so, that is very sad. I don't know enough to say, I must have missed the discussion in the mailing lists. I like to think of Wikipedia as the community, namely us, and although sometimes annoying things happen, it's pretty incredible that we have built and are maintaining the world's major source of reference information - I think you have to remember it that way, and remember in any venture there are a lot of bumps in the road. The software does searches while offline, I'll email you the demo I got today (which uses WPCD1 as the test dataset!). I'll give you a ring next week - Tuesday is best for me, would that work for you? If you have Skype, we could perhaps do a 3-way or 4-way conference call? Walkerma 04:50, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, there was actually some support for the <nofollow> idea, at m:Nofollow. This post by Jimbo to Wikitech-l comes to mind, because they did have reasons to disable it. As for giving a ring - were you asking that to me or BozMo? ;) Titoxd(?!?) 04:56, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I want to talk with BozMo about sharing scripts/readers and also where our two projects are going, but when I mentioned Skype I was thinking of seeing if BozMo wanted to widen the conversation to include one or more of the other active people (you(Tito)/eyu100/Emmanuel/Wikiwizzy). However, if you're available to talk, Tito, I'd love to have a chat one on one about what still needs to be done on V0.5, where you think things should go, etc. - our time zones are closer, so it's easier for us. We can do this via Skype (I'm listed as Martin Walker) or traditional phone. Walkerma 05:33, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Meanwhile
Can I ask a small favour/question of you? It relates to physical chemistry (to do with polythene, hot CaCl solution and various types of water-proofed paper)? I am just after a brain dump?--BozMo talk 13:55, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. Here is my bucket chemistry problem. CaCl2 seems to be used in most household dehumidifiers as it is hydroscopic and only mildly nasty. (At least I think its CaCl2: I got as far as a flametest only). Often it is held in place (first as a solid and gradually as a solution) by some form of porous waxed paper glued to polythene. The air generally gets dried after going through the paper slowly. Surprisingly I have found this combination can build up enough pressure of acquired water behind it to burst spectacularly (especially odd as there is no vapour phase so the burst energy must come from the thick polythene container): the waxed paper can keep pressure back well (again, that surprised me). I want to use one of these upside down (so the liquid in the contained is always in contact with the paper) in a coolish (110C say) non-food oven (basically a quick drying oven). I could explain why when I've got time. Will hot CaCl2 solution do anything corrosive to waxed paper or polythene or glue (say I reglue with epoxy-resin)? On the waxed paper side (if I have to replace the waxed paper) does it matter what kind of waxed paper it is? It is pretty blue Peter (or at least the project is for something with my kids). I could just run some tests of course but an educated guess would save me a load of time. --BozMo talk 10:24, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Next Week
Are you happy with the outcome of the naming discussion you sent me to? Would you like to improve 2006 Wikipedia CD Selection? I could provide a photo of the CD cover if you could help me put it up.
Next week I have time and effort to start doing some work on the CD versions. First steps are
(1) to re-run the existing script and sort out the TeX problem with it (2) to see what else has been broken by WP changes in the meantime (3) to see what can be done about image attribution where we think the last script was inadequate (4) to run the script on the new article list and stick it somewhere for people to look at/ check (5) to try the script on your article list for 0.5 and stick is somewhere for you to look at (6) to have a serious think about navigation, redirects etc (jointly with you)
That sound about right? --BozMo talk 12:53, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- As we say in Newcastle, it sounds "champion"! Should I give you a ring on Tuesday (my quiet day)- and should we discuss calcium chloride then too? Walkerma 01:15, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

- Yes, I think the CD names are fine, though I'd still like to change the name of the project from "Test Versions." Wednesday is busy for me, but I could get up early and talk to you before work - around lunchtime your time (~13:00 UTC), would that be OK? I don't have MSN, though IRC or Skype are possible alternatives. Walkerma 15:38, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POV flag
Someone (anon) has POV flagged 2006 Wikipedia CD Selection and added a stub section on comparison with other WP CD projects. Any chance you could put something on the Release Series versus the selection series into the article? POV is apparently a lack of neutrality ref the other projects, so you should be qualified to be neutral. --BozMo talk 13:41, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Apparently we have done a grab of all your images and articles last night. Will have a check through first Wikpedia 0.5 is 1962 articles and 19004 images 578 Megabytes. Hmm.--BozMo talk 15:20, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Topright corner pics
Any reason why wikipedia could put in the corner of release version selected articles like FA and Spoken articles? It'd give some public notice, maybe encourage more vigorous editing for the articles too. JoeSmack Talk 05:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- You probably would want to avoid the issues with Good article... Titoxd(?!?) 06:00, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Great idea in principle, but there are problems in practice. First is a technical problem - having an image that links to a page like the star does is apparently problematical (the star is a very rare exception). Secondly, there is great political resistance to putting things like that on the article page itself. I think the WP:GA folks would LOVE to get their icon on pages too, but there would be howls of protest from Abijan to Zanzibar. I suspect people would react in a similar way with Version 0.5/0.7 etc. Once the project becomes well established, we may be able to make a case for something like that, but at this point we could end up in megabytes of heated discussion about a little icon instead of working on making CDs/DVDs! - Outsider's point of view. There needs to be a hard-copy which is commecially available before you will be able to break through the opposition on this one (and not from me, I quite like the stars...). All the time that WP 1.0 is an editorial project, the general consensus is to keep it to the talk pages. Physchim62 (talk) 18:03, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

The file you sent me a link to is very big (170Mb) so it is presumably the data as well as the reader. I am just looking for ideas and inspiration really --BozMo talk 15:06, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- It will be made available (under GFDL, I believe), but right now it's still under development. What I sent you was a working demo - but obviously for a demo one wants to have the articles too! As long as you're not planning your 2007 release for January 1st, you could consider using it, I think. Emmanuel probably knows more. Walkerma 16:42, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] two things
1) could I have a shopping list on clean up for 0.5 e.g. do you want external links in etc. 2) might be interested in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/2006_Wikipedia_CD_Selection. I don't have much emotion in the issue but I think whether static versions ever get namespace articles is a good one. The principle thing is difficult but also there is a practical thing that if people come to WP looking for a release version they cannot find it from the onsite search unless you have some sort of namespace presence. Entirely up to you --BozMo talk 22:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] List of African leaders
Hi, thanks for helping me with the Wars of Africa set. Here's some suggestions for your set:
Pieter Willem Botha 2nd last apartheid president of South Africa. Seretse Khama 1st president of Botswana Ian Smith declared Unilateral Independence for Rhodesia
Thanks Samuel 22:55, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- Good suggestions, I can't believe I forgot Smith. I actually had Botha in originally, I was on the edge with that - but you've clarified it for me. Then I hope we can both review each other's set nominations and give comments there! Thanks, Walkerma 05:36, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

PS Our latest copy is at http://2007-wikipedia-cd-selection.fixedreference.org/wp/index/alpha.htm and for the moment I am using the same script for both. Both current have all the images with no acknowledgements etc. We are looking at that.
- Great, thank you! We should probably coordinate your work on Version 0.5 with the Linterweb work - I'm sure you have cleanup scripts they don't have, and vice versa. I hope that my navigation pages can supplement the alphabetical page - I have two done, but I'll get a lot more done this weekend. By the way, what is the difference between the two versions? I'm really glad we didn't make a CD with this version of the Tanzania article! (Though I admit, the heading "War with Pluto in East Africa" did make me chuckle!) Do you have any scripts for screening out bad versions? Emmanuel said he might be able to write something. I'll email you again very soon, I haven't forgotten about CaCl2, I've just been VERY busy this week. Thanks again, Walkerma 05:48, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:WP Futurama notice
Hey man, I'm the idiot that you helped create an assessment with the bot for the Adelaide project a couple months ago. I have hit similar problems with the Futurama project. I have made 2 categories (Category:Futurama articles by quality and Category:Futurama articles by importance) but have so far been unable to get them to display on the notice. Please help me and reply on how I can fix it, or when you have fixed it.
Cheers Jasrocks (talk) 11:56, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think anything needs "fixing", the has picked up the new categories. Now you need to assess and tag some articles, then when the redlinked categories appear such as Category:Start-Class Futurama articles you must (for each one):
- Click on the redlink
- Type in any introductory blurb you want, then type in (or importance) as well as Futurama articles.
- Hit enter, and the category should appear, with any Start-Class articles listed. Check that the categories at the bottom of the page are bluelinked (if not, check your spelling and capitalisation).
For more help see the instructions, which (I think) have been revamped since you did the Adelaide work - now easier to understand (I think, anyway). By the way, I notice that there are only 19 articles assessed so far for the Adelaide project - I'm sure there must be many more articles than that! I'll watch for it starting up! Thanks for using the bot, Walkerma 02:24, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- To add importance information to the header tag, do as I did here, and add |importance=Top (or High, Mid or Low). Adding importance is quite like adding the quality information. Don't forget to click on the redlinked categories, though (as I described above), or the bot won't pick anything up! Walkerma 16:58, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Request for assistance
The country lists look ok, as far as I can tell; there are lots of borderline cases, but those are to be expected. A question that came to mind as I was going through them, though: what was the basis for selecting the "countries" here? The inclusion of things like Svalbard and Wales under that label threw me off for a moment. Kirill Lokshin 03:47, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Clear - crystal!
I recd your comment about my eradicating "clear" when a liquid is colourless. Maybe I was over the top ... It's kind of a philosophical point, and not an burning one. I'll revert the toluene one and some others. My feeling is that clear is superfluous and that indicating otherwise implies that colourless (pure) liquids exist that are cloudy. So I felt that the austere approach was instructive. I could have consulted the group before my mini-jihad on that poor adjective. BTW, you see that I and others are not replacing "white" with colourless for solids, since that term might be obscure to non-specialists. Thank you for your advice. Best wishes,--Smokefoot 05:48, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- I see we already have discussion on this point. I do partially concur, colourless solutions should not absorb light and hence be clear. But .. I am afraid there will still be people who describe white (or opaque) solutions (they reflect all colour .. difficult, if a solution absorbs green light, we describe the colour of the solution as red, when it does not absorb, it is colourless .. aargh) as colourless too, so I think to avoid that confusion, they should state 'clear'. I am sorry for my own little jihad in reverting the edits again. Maybe we should indeed discuss this in a wikiproject. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:04, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Start test run of MartinBotII?
We have already discussed how the bot will be used. MartinBotII can start running on many more Wikiprojects using the old method. I think the method with linking is too complicated and prone to error (many Start-Class, Low-Importance articles made it). We should first try without rating the projects. If we need to, we will rate the projects ourselves for the test run. For a possible second test run, the Wikiprojects would rate each other (two projects rate one to possibly shift the blame off one project) to see if this method works. If it works, we should run the bot for real. Eyu100(t|fr|Version 1.0 Editorial Team) 04:47, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi - unfortunately, my phone line has gone down at home, along with my internet, so I'll not be able to run the bot until BT lay a new cable for me. Sorry about this - I've applied for a toolserver account, so in future (if I get it) will be able to easily to the link ranking method, though for now I think it would be more productive (and quicker) to use the original (Wikiproject ranking) method, pending full access to some databases, whether they be downloaded or on toolserver. Again, sorry, Martinp23 17:33, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

- Great! I sent you an email for the beta. You're right to focus on 0.5 until it's out. I'd love to help if I can. Firstly I'd love to toy with those templates a little, if you don't mind (colors for ease of eyes, a thing or two else). Also, I think I'd like to start to learn how to officially review articles for assessment passing for 0.7. I am totally screwed monday-thursday for time, but other than that I'd love to give a little grunt work. JoeSmack Talk 02:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- initial beta thoughts: waaay less austere than i thought it'd be. this is more than a browser and a mouse, impressive. the 'find on this page' button is a pencil, and that seems kinda weird (better: magnifying glass w/word on it? highlighted text example?). the splash page is good. clicking on images doesn't bring up copyright things etc (i think i was led from the front page that images are 'clickable' for details). i found vandalism in about 3 minutes in Propaganda, the further reading section: '<3 i love wikipedia'. after external links in some places there are sometimes about 5 spaces before other characters begin (im guessing you knew that one). possible full screen view (move those big buttons out of the way)? the page flipping background distracts lead-in text, wikipedia online has done away and gone all white background to avoid this. ISBNs dont click well (i think i saw a bug about this on the bug page). i like the memory of the foward/back buttons, it's long (however if you click back really fast after many, it'll go to a blank page instead of the homepage). it doesn't remember the window size of the offline browser when you re-launch.
- this is a lot of stuff, my apologies. i just sort of started and went with it. JoeSmack Talk 06:48, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

- p.s. copyright potential problems? will we get in trouble when we release 0.5 with links to lyrics in the EL section like with The Supremes (offline version)? JoeSmack Talk 06:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Assessment
Yes I was going by WP:MILHIST criteria. I think I will reconsider my rating of Plato, provided that someone fixes the several sections not having references thing (there's a possibility that The state may have referenced under my nose). Sulfuric acid...um...no. There are three inline cites and three general references.
As for WP:WVWP, I've already done some work for them, but would you mind telling me which articles have no parent WikiProject? And whose bright idea it was to include The Simpsons, which is still in its current run? And Lost, which hasn't gone off the air, either?
Oh, and word to the wise: your typical fandom is absolutely chock full of delusional morons who were probably introduced to the fandom via some GeoCities website or someone's FF.net page, so anything with a fandom around it needs to be sourced out the ass.--Rmky87 02:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wikicite
Hi, Martin- I took somewhat of a hiatus from the project and have only been tinkering with it lately, but am still eager to roll it out and have several immediately useful featurs already in place. I'd like to talk about it with Eric and you to see if we can at least get a test environment up. Can you email me (same username as on my Wikimedia accounts @ gmail.com ) ?

[edit] Indium halides
Just finishing the indium halide article. Looking around there is an indium bromide stub that could be deleted in its current form as it is not very useful. An Indium(III) bromide page may be more appropriate but the only halide that actually warrants a page at the moment is InCl3 and thats there. Regarding InCl3 its main use commercally, at least according to the Indium Corporation web site Q&A is as a starting point for the manufacture of trimethylindium. Now I would think of Grignards or Al alkyls but metal contamination could be an issue. Any idea how it is actually made then this could be added into InCl3 and InMe3?. Axiosaurus 13:57, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've taken a quick look at this, I'll try and do some serious work on it in the next week. I've been very busy, both with my job (giving an exam tomorrow!) and because our Wikipedia CD is coming out very soon. Thanks for your work on the In halides, Walkerma 15:53, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- added indium and gallium halides. Thinking about aluminium halides but will put this one on the back burner for a week or so. Looking at gp 13 chalcogenides for now. Axiosaurus 22:07, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Good to hear from you. Working on a rewrite of the borane article- as a family page covering all the boranes rather than the existing page which is essentially BH3. This will entail a bit of modification to all the other borane pages, decaborane diborane etc. to get the naming right etc. Got into this because i rewrote Wade's rules /PSEPT article (didn't add the capping principle because IMHO it doesn't really explain geometry of neutral BnXn - any thoughts?) which I wanted to refer to --and then added Zintl phases because it wasn't there. Now looking at borides -article is bit short. Nice area on the borders of chemistry and solid state, lovely cluster stuff and lots of applications, superconductivity etc etc. and yes I am still working on the group 13 chalcogenides. Axiosaurus 10:31, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've changed the borane article and notified folk on chemicals page. cheers.Axiosaurus 15:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
It's been a week since my recent request for adminship passed, and since I haven't managed to delete the Main Page - yet - I figure it's safe to send these out. Thanks a lot for participating in my RfA; I hope to do a good job. If you see me doing something wrong, need help, or just want to have a chat, please don't hesitate to drop by :) – riana_dzasta 08:08, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Comments requested
Ah, nice to know about the CDs; I assume you'll post an announcement on-wiki once the things are done? It'll be a sort of triumphal moment for everyone involved in 1.0/0.5/assessments/etc., I think. Kirill Lokshin 05:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Same here. A mail forwarded to Foundation-l, Wikipedia-l and WikiEN-l would also be nice; that way, the Foundation can make a formal press release if it desires to do so. Titoxd(?!?) 05:51, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, most of the press release has already been written! Once I have a definite date I'll be sure to publicise it in-wiki as well. There has been a lot of offline activity in recent weeks! Walkerma 05:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] CD exclude list
You asked about inappropriately WPCD flagged articles. See Wikipedia:2006_Wikipedia_CD_Selection#Exclude_list. Evidently some people think proposing inappropriate articles is funny... Should be finished the selection next week. --BozMo talk 16:34, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Compressed fluid
Ok, from a request on the MediaWiki:Recentchangestext queue, I made Compressed fluid. Mind double-checking to see whether I missed something glaringly obvious? ;) Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 08:48, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- I added some categories, and made the stub more specific (Fluid dynamics isn't perfect, but it's very close, and will get seen, unlike with Science stub). Other than that, it's a long way from my expertise, so I can't really be sure. I've never heard the word steam used for anything other than H2O vapor - are you sure you can use it as a general term, as in "a steam"? Sounds wrong to me, but maybe engineers use that term. Cheers, Walkerma 19:34, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I think it is the latter, but since I am not really sure, I went with what the book and the professor said. It may as well have a real term, but I don't know about it yet. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 19:36, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- Check your mail, by the way... hopefully it came through. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 20:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Version 0.5
Hi. What are the steps to follow in order to join the project? Become a member of the reviwers' team and that's it? The page is not very specific. Thanks Miskin 23:54, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm very interested but I think I'm going to wait until April before I sign up. Then I'll have some more time to spare. I wouldn't like being a signed up without being able to work on it at least once a day. Thanks for your answer, I'll contact you again soon. Miskin 22:25, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hey
Thanks for the message. It's good to be back. I have not really been following the WP:1.0 project, but it appears things are going great. I noticed that assessments really took off, thanks to the great bot work from Oleg and Wikiproject acceptance. I'm anxious to check out the upcoming CD release. I'll try to take a look at the new things happening around WP:1.0. Let me know if you need any favors. Cheers. GfloresUser talk:Gflores 04:11, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I have a few questions, if you don't mind. :)
- Is no more work needed for the 0.5 release, besides internal tidying and whatnot?
- That MartinBot looks neat. That will help tremendously with the 300k assessed article. I was wondering, is the MartinBot planned to find appropriate articles for the 0.7 release, together with individual reviews? Or is it for 1.0?
- I'm a little confused in the Review To-do list. It mentions both Core Topics and Vital Articles, which seem to have mostly the same articles, but only Core Topics has been worked on. Is the focus on Core Topics?
- Lastly, where can I find the statistics for total assessed articles?
- --GfloresTalk 20:04, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Helping out
I will be more than happy to help out - although I will be out frm March 15- March 25 (I will be in Italy). When I get back I will work studiously on the project, along with the WPBiography assessment drive.. --Ozgod 10:18, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hello again! We are shipping a wikipedia snapshot in a few weeks to countries for children to test. Of course WP is a bit over their heads in some ways... but it's a good start. What do you think of and providing tools for saying "here's *my* favorite subset of WP 0.5"? Perhaps highlighting one or two subsets to make the point? Hope to chat soon. +sj + 23:44, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re:IRC on Work via WikiProjects
Hi,
I would be willing to join in such an IRC (although I will need told how to set it up), but I would be quite limited to the times I could join you, since the amount of time I can spend online varies, and you're probably in the US to further limit things (I'm in the UK). So I could happily say I'd be willing to, but can't honestly say wheather or not I would actually could. By the way, I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience with the accident at the chemical plant.... Although I thankfuly have never experienced anything like that first-hand, I know full well the lasting effect it can have - no-one deserves that. I shall take a look at the prose on the article on the 1991 fire. Thanks, Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 07:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Children's version
saw your note on sj's talk page about a children's version of WP. I've been thinking a bit about how to do such a thing. I like your idea of a subset of 0.5, perhaps with just the lead paragraphs pulled. The children's encyclopedias I've seen have lots of topics but much less text and more pictures. In other words, comprehensiveness is not a goal. Difficult and inappropriate language is a problem, though. I don't know if there could be a successful children's fork, a la simple english (which isn't terribly successful) or if it would be better published separately. I think a lot of teachers etc. could get excited about an editable children's encyclopedia, though. -- phoebe (brassratgirl) /(talk) 01:17, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Blog, Wikipedia Weekly, and some other increasing-entropy stuff
Hello, Martin. As I said on WVWP's talk, I may be able to attend a meeting this weekend, depending on the time (I'm still UTC-7, regardless of Daylight Saving Time and such), so more info would be appreciated. By the way, check out what I wrote here... hopefully I didn't miss something obvious. (And if you want to contribute a piece for the five-article series, it would be awesome as well! ;)) By the way, that comes out in http://en.planet.wikimedia.org, so other people in the Wikimedia community would read it.
On a different front, maybe talking to WP:WEEKLY about the upcoming exciting news would be nice. They film about a few days in advance, so if we want to have the news out, we would need to ask them. Unfortunately, I don't have Skype on my Mac, and I don't have a mike on my WinXP laptop... :( do you think you could chat with them? Or who should I ask? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 06:59, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- Most definitely. I'm planning to have a piece about the release on the same day of the release, as an "unofficial" press release (by the way, when is the real press release for that going to be sent? We're getting a bit close to the date, and if we can build a bit of anticipation towards it, it would probably mean higher sales, which mean more cash to the Foundation), but you have much, much more information about what happened behind the scenes than I have, so that would really be nice. It is nice news that the CD is being pressed now, though. How many pieces are we going to end up making?
- As for WP:WEEKLY, they haven't contacted me back... but hopefully they'll do so soon. I'll try to get back to you on that, hopefully soonish. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 04:20, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Some re-nominations for GA that may have your interest
Martin, some five A-Class articles got delisted from GA as their refs weren't in-line. I took care of this minor technicality, re-assessed them myself for A-Class in WP:Chem, and renominated them for GA at WP:GAC: toluene, zinc chloride, gold(III) chloride, potassium iodide, and sodium sulfate. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 01:01, 17 March 2007 (UTC).
