[edit] History
The school opened in whenever, to accommodate the growing baby boom population which had filled Rippowam High School and Stamford High School to capacity. Westhill is located on Roxbury Road, in the northern section of Stamford. Its mascot is the Viking (borrowed from the Minnesota Vikings) and its colors are purple and gold. The Vikings excel in both interscholastic sports as well as other extra-curricular activities. The Girl's Basketball team is the school's best team, making it to the FCIAC Championship in 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, three straight seasons. In 2006, Westhill's football team reached the 5-5 mark for the first time since 1986, including a massive win over crosstown rival Stamford High on Stamford's own field, 45-23, crushing the Stamford High Knights in their wake.
They also known for there drama (Northstar) and tech programs. In 2005 along with Stamford High School, they won the Connecticut Drama Festival with their show Metamorphosis.
Westhill is known for its diverse student population, with students from over 40 countries roaming the hallways. The current principal is Camille Figluizzi, who is rumored to be leaving at the completion of the 2006-2007 school year.
Famous alumni from WHS include Michael Fedele, the current Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut.
[edit] Campus
The main school is currently made up of two buildings, the Raynor and Finch Buildings, connected by the library on one side of the rectangular courtyard in-between and a cafeteria on the other (there are two cafeterias). There is also an unconnected, fairly new building for the school's agricultural science program, including some biology classrooms as well.
Due to the increasing population, a freshman class building and new gymnasium are also being constructed, however it is expected the buildings will eventually be integrated for all grades.
[edit] The Westword
The school's newspaper, The Westword (a portmanteau of "westward" and "word"), has historically surpassed the quality of other student newspapers in the state, and has won several national and state-wide awards.Started in the early 1970's by Gary Stanek, the paper went on to become a nationally-acclaimed student publication. In 2004, Stanek stepped down as the newspaper's advisor and was replaced by David Wooley.
Currently, The Westword has a staff of over 70 students. Its issues, generally 40-56 pages, are produced monthly and mailed to a circulation of over 3000 students, parents, and faculty. The Westword's website has over two thousand community members on its distribution list and typically receives over 150,000 hits per month.
The Westword currently boasts several of its graduates in the ranks of esteemed college publications. The current Editor-in-Chief is senior student Andy Granowitz, a longtime staff member.
