Westmount Collegiate Institute is a high school in the Thornhill, Ontario district of the greater city of Vaughan. It opened its doors in 1996, as part of the multi-purpose Benjamin Vaughan Complex, named for Benjamin Vaughan, the diplomat the city is named for. The complex contains the high school, Rosemount Community Centre, and the City Playhouse, which the school is given limited access to. Located at the busy intersection of Bathurst Street and New Westminster Drive, the school is part of the York Region District School Board. Westmount is one of the 29 secondary schools in the board which comprises 191 schools all together.[1] The majority of lockers are located on the ground floor in the atrium in long cell banks away from classrooms.

[edit] Benjamin Vaughan Complex
[edit] Rosemount Community Centre
The community centre which is attached to the school, contains an arena, a split gymnasium, and recreational rooms used for different events and programs on such as playing bridge. The name of the community centre, was created by merging the names of two nearby elementary schools and subdivisions, Rosedale and Westmount. The high school is given access to the gym and arena at different times.
[edit] City Playhouse
The City Playhouse is a community theatre where shows are put on. The box office is on the south side of the theatre facing New Westminster Avenue. Similar to the community centre, the high school is given access to the theatre so many times a year for use in assemblies as well as theatrical and musical productions.
[edit] Nursery
Attached to the west side of the complex, a preschool exists for children younger than the age of four.
[edit] Building
The complex was built by MCW Consultants in 1995, who later also built a near identical complex in Newmarket, Ontario, the Newmarket High School. It also contains an attached community theatre that looks almost the same. The older Milliken Mills High School in Markham, Ontario, built in 1988, has a very similar layout on the inside to the two, however, it contains a very different façade and décor. All three of these schools contain a large open atrium with a grand staircase that handles the highest volume of students getting to and from class. Even though these schools are in different cities, they are all part of the York Region District School Board.
[edit] Trivia
- In the 2003/2004 year, the school store, located underneath the atrium stairs, was renamed “Bare Necessities”.
