Quick guide to Fancruft on RuneScape subpages.

Remember: Wikipedia is not a game guide, all content must be of a neutral point of view, all content must be verifiable. In these subpages, we are not writing for RuneScape players; we are writing for everybody in the world. Very few of people need to know things like "abby whips cost 2mil" or "zammy prayerbooks are a reward from horror from the deep quest". This is Fancruft, in that it only appeals or means anything to players and fans of RuneScape, and will "bore, distract or confuse a non-fan, when its exclusion would not significantly harm the factual coverage as a whole". It makes a poor article to be filled with fancruft. Instead, a more basic explanation is more often required, as readers may not know as much as you do!

In short, fancruft includes things like:

  • Pricing information
  • How to complete quests and what the rewards are.
  • Instructions for how to use and perform a skill, for example "to make bronze bars you need 1 tin ore and 1 copper ore"
  • Lengthy, detailed descriptions of items.

Avoiding Fancruft

  • Instead of giving a specific price (which is subject to change anyway), state, for example, "Runite armour often fetches significant sums of money in RuneScape's marketplaces"
  • Do not give game guide type information for quests.
  • Limit mentioning the different types of equipment or raw material used for a skill
  • Never describe an item in intricate detail, for example, the "Abyssal Whip", readers do not need to know that "the abyssal whip comes from abyssal demons which require 85 slayer to kill"

Instead, use inline citations, linking to the relevant RuneScape knowledge base article.

Wikipedia is not the place to guide people through every detail of playing RuneScape, as such a level of detail is inappropriate. It is appropriate at the RuneScape Wiki, a version of Wikipedia intended for players.

Furthermore, read Wikipedia's Manual of Style. Then read it again. You may also wish to read the Wikipedia Introduction in full. Make it easier on your fellow contributors before you click the Save button; click the Preview button, Wikilink to other articles (for example, Wikilink to Sword), make sure your spelling and grammar is absolutely immaculate, don't ask readers to message you ingame, and don't ever use shorthand! Ur nt in rs anymore, you are writing an Encyclopedia!

To-do list for Wilderness (RuneScape): edit  · history  · watch  · refresh
  • Change most mentions of "you" to "players" and when possible and appropriate, be more specific such as "attacker," "wielder," etc.
  • Use consistency for all terms throughout the articles. Ex. RuneScape must look like this when mentioned. The proper term is "two handed sword" for any of the two handed swords.
  • Write out contractions, don't use abbreviations, change everything to the British spellings of words, fix grammar and spelling, etc.

More info should be added for the various styles of pking, pictures too. RZ heretic 01:36, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rewrite

I have rewritten a good part of this article today. I hope this meets with approval from everyone. I deleted a lot of material that was irrelevant to the topic, did not have NPOV, or was repeated elsewhere. Feel free to critique and improve. Xela Yrag 20:49, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Good job! It's a much more interesting read now. I especially appreciate the fixes done to the Pures section—it was in need of some repairs. Hyenaste [citation needed] 21:25, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clans

I need some guidance here. I was unaware that these ARPK clans existed until I checked this article and found the edit that includes. I know that mention of the actual clan names is probably not encyclopedic and I will edit that in a minute; however, if there really are clans that make it their mission to protect players who are in the wild on legitimate business or missions other than PKing, I am leaning toward leaving it in. The paragraph as it stands is a little on the POV rather then NPOV side, but I believe that can be easily fixed. If I don't get any negative feedback, I will try to edit for the POV and leave this in. Xela Yrag 21:04, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RPK?

The whole point of PKing is to attack random players, as well as other players who are pking. The whole RPK and ARPK thing is incredibly stupid, imho RZ heretic 05:39, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

I used to be in a clan that was ARPK. There are clans that are like that. --24.96.242.143 18:38, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

I see why there's RPK and ARPK. ARPK is probably formed when, for example, someone's skiller friend gets killed by an RPKer, and the player decides to make the wilderness safer for non-pkers. It makes sense to leave it in. Pyrospirit Talk Contribs 16:11, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit of pure description

I believe the pures section of the article was wrong. For a starta pure ranger with a combat level of 40 will have the range level of around 55-60. Secondly many pures do not train defence and certain ones also choose to miss out on prayer. It is very rare for a pure to sacrifice magic. So i have cleaned the article and changed these misrepresentations. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.37.105.197 (talk • contribs) 15:24, 30 June 2006.

[edit] Tztok jad is the strongest monster in ruenscape

So why does the article list it as the Kalphite queen? The jad is a level 702 where as the kq is a level 300 or so, so please stop changing this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.37.105.197 (talk • contribs) 21:29, 30 June 2006.

Nobody is saying that the Kalphite Queen is the highest level monster in the game. However, the Kalphite Queen was the highest level monster when she was released, knocking the King Black Dragon from his position as highest level monster. The KBD was the highest level monster for the longest period in RuneScape history to this point. Other higher monsters have since taken the KQ's place. The fact still remains that the Kalphite Queen knocked the KBD out of first place. Xela Yrag 17:36, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Tztok jad is not the strongest monster. You can see that fact in that Tztok jad can be killed by one person, while the Kalphite Queen must have more than one person to kill. Chaos elemental may be ahead of the Queen, though. Mamyles 17:05, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Again, nobody is saying Jad is the strongest monster. Jad is not even in the Wilderness, and is not mentioned in this article. Jad, however, IS the highest LEVEL monster in the game, at 702. Strongest is an opinion. Hardest to defeat is an opinion. Highest level, however, is a verifiable, uncontestable FACT, which is what we want in an encyclopedic article. Opinions and such don't belong.Xela Yrag 17:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Map

The map needs to be updated, preferably with the one here —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.182.174.58 (talk • contribs) 00:52, 4 November 2006.

  • I'll add that now. Mamyles 21:02, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Isn't that image copyrighted? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.92.100.204 (talk • contribs) .
Which is why we have template messages for copyright status. We may use them with proper credits given to the owners of a given image. Agentscott00(talk) 02:17, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Noteable locations?

The notable locations section is entirely funcruft. I do not see how exact locations are supposed to help or interest non-players. Would anyone disagree with removing it? Mamyles 21:01, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

This part of the article seems very un-wikipedia like. If it cannot be re-writen from an unbiased perspective, it should be deleted, in my opinion. Bio 18:00, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Killzone" of runescape wilderness

I have a picture of the runescape wilderness and it marks the most populated fighting areas. Would this be a good thing to put on here? lol —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Joshua090909 (talkcontribs) .

No; we wouldn't be able to prove that they're popular, it would be fancruft, and it would be original research. Agentscott00(talk) 04:21, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unneeded text in article "Wilderness (RuneScape)

I noticed some spam-like text on this article. I cleaned it up by deleteing them. --Megamanfan3 17:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Do not merge combat with Wilderness

The wilderness is an area in runescape not a player combat skill. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Storkian (talkcontribs) 18:58, 26 March 2007 (UTC).

We already decided that a split merge to combat and locations would be best, I think. -Amarkov moo! 22:48, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
