[edit] History
WLFI began broadcasting in 1953 on channel 59, as WFAM-TV. It was owned by Sarkes Tarzian, a radio manufacturer in Bloomington, and was a sister station to WTTV in Indianapolis. It moved to channel 18 in the 1960s and later changed its call letters to WLFI. Formerly, the news division of WLFI was known as "News Service 18" and then for many years as "Lafayette Live TV-18."
The station was owned by Block Communications from the mid-1990s until 2000, when current owner LIN Television acquired WLFI in exchange for 67 percent of then-ABC (now NBC) affiliate WAND in Decatur, Illinois (although LIN now controls both stations).
"News Channel 18" currently airs weekdays from: 5:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. - 11:35 p.m. On weekends, News Channel 18 airs at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Chris Morisse, Jeff Smith, Larry Clisby, and Steve Scherer have been associated with the station for more than 20 years.
WLFI also broadcasts many of today's most popular syndicated programs such as Live with Regis and Kelly, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Inside Edition, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy!.
