[edit] History
It began on June 17, 1953 as the first television station in Central Illinois, with the call letters of WTVP, which is used today for a PBS station in Peoria. It became WAND in 1966 when LIN Broadcasting bought the station — the very first station in the LIN TV chain. The station carried programming from both ABC and DuMont until 1955, when DuMont shut down operations.[2]
On March 26, 1978, their transmitter tower went down in an ice storm putting them out of a signal for 18 months.
LIN wholly owned the station until March 2000, when it sold 67 percent of the station to Block Communications in exchange for 100 percent of WLFI-TV in Lafayette, Indiana. Block then entered into a local management agreement with LIN (who retains a 33 percent ownership interest in WAND), allowing LIN to continue to operate the station.
Due to Decatur's position half-way between Springfield and Champaign, it was the only station to cover the entire market without a satellite station. The ABC, CBS, and Fox affiliates each have two full-power stations to cover the market.
The station was one of ABC's first affiliates. It remained with ABC from sign-on to joining NBC on September 5, 2005.
