A welcome from me also, prof. Adéwọlé. I saw your request for help on editing Wikipedia on the Afrophonewikis Group. We do not have help pages in Yoruba just yet (seeing that the first Yoruba contributors have just arrived last week), but for the time being I have duplicated some essential help pages from the English Wikipedia; you can find them at Help:Contents, or in the menu called 'navigation' to the left. [edit] Introducing myself
I hold an MA in African Languages and Linguistics (Leiden University 2006) and have written my MA thesis on the body-part terminology of Yoruba (I carried out field work among the sizable Yoruba community in The Hague, the Netherlands). As such, I do read and understand some Yoruba, although unfortunately I do not speak it at any reasonable level.
I have been active on the English Wikipedia for over two years now, and I do have sysop status there. I have also been granted sysop status on the Yoruba Wikipedia, and so far mainly have been deleting vandalism and spam, as well as nurturing the few real articles being contributed. I'm excited that you and a few more native speakers of Yoruba have decided to start contributing to this edition of Wikipedia. My position as a sysop here is only interim, and my activities will mainly be facilitative. I think my experience with Wikipedia could be of help in this stage, and as a sysop I intend to help out where I can.
[edit] Getting this Wikipedia started
In organizing our efforts, the Community Portal might be of use. We can post messages there for everyone to read, and discuss central things like translations, policies on titles, et cetera. For a more thorough introduction to Wikipedia and its principles I will have to refer you to the English Wikipedia for now. It would be great if you could check out the basic policies and guidelines that have made the English Wikipedia so successfull, and perhaps you could consider translating the most basic policies into Yoruba so as to ensure a good start of the Wikipedia Encyclopedia in Yoruba.
The most important policies relating to content are:
- Verifiability and cite your sources — these two closely related policies ensure that not just everyone can dream up fake articles or insert fringe theories into Wikipedia. Wikipedia, like every encyclopedia, is just a tertiary source, reporting what has been published in other reliable sources.
- No original research — related to the above policies, this policy is there to ensure that Wikipedia is not used as a venue to publish original (non-peer reviewed) research. The rationale is that without this policy it would be impossible for Wikipedia to be verifiable and there would be no reason to trust it as a reliable source.
- en:WP:NPOV — in a nutshell: all Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing views fairly, proportionately and without bias.
The most important policies related to working with others are:
- Assume good faith — in allowing anyone to edit, we must assume that most people who work on the project are trying to help it, not hurt it. If this weren't true, a project like Wikipedia would be doomed from the beginning.
- No personal attacks — in a nutshell: Do not make personal attacks anywhere in Wikipedia. Comment on content, not on the contributor. Personal attacks will not help you make a point; they hurt the Wikipedia community and deter users from helping create a good encyclopedia.
Now, of course these policies have been crafted by the community of the English Wikipedia and in the end, it might be good to adjust some things to the specific situation of the Yoruba Wikipedia. I believe, however, that we will need at least some good policies at this point. The motto: getting a Wikipedia started is not as simple as calling some others in to help writing content; we will need some basic policies also to guide the project through its early youth.

[edit] Under-diacritic
Ẹ k'aro o prof Adéwọlé. I have tried to solve the issue with S and the under-diacritic. If you edit a page, you will see a grey box below the 'save' and 'show preview' buttons. In it, you will see some precombined symbols in Yoruba orthography. If you click on a symbol it will be inserted.
I will test it myself in this very comment by inserting the name of a well-known professor: Ayọ Bamgboṣe. To me, it looks good. Does the name display right to you? — mark ✎ 19:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I tried but when I wanted to add them after clicking on edit, I couldn't get the wiki Yoruba characters below the article. I need to use these characters for the editing. As far as my knowledge of the system is now, I can do that only at the wikipedia page. Thanks.

You've done already a lot of great work for this Wikipedia Loadewole, congratulations.
Some little remarks that might be a help for you:
- A localisation in the title, such as , Osun State, Nigeria is not necessary when there isn't an article yet about another subject with the same name. Example:
- You want to write an article about Ilobuu in Osun, but there is already an article about another village Ilobuu, also in Nigeria, but in Oyo. The name of this article is Ilobuu. Then you can change the name of the existing article into Ilobuu, Oyo, and make a new article Ilobuu, Osun yourself. Ilobuu, which became a redirect, should then be rewritten into a short page with an explanation of the different meanings of Ilobuu, with the matching article links.
- If there isn't another article about another subject named Ilobuu yet, it's not necessary to provide a localisation in the article name. Otherwise, people inserting "Ilobuu" in the URL bar don't get an article, and article names become too long.
- It's not necessary to repeat the article name as a headline in the article. Headlines can be used, but only to divide the article into different sections. Normally, there is an introduction text above the first headline on each page.

- By the way, the number has increased with two since, so it's not completely set in stone. I don't know what to do about the inaccuracy though, as it is a feature that is hardcoded in the Wikipedia software. — mark ✎ 19:28, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Is this an English speaking Wiki? I can't understand anything.
It is a Yoruba speaking wiki. Even articles titled in English are summarised or reviewed in Yoruba

[edit] Article names
It's better to write your articles direct under the Yoruba name as this is the Yoruba Wikipedia :) The English names then become redirects to the correct pages. If you want to change the title of a page, click "move" and write the new/correct name in the box named "To new title:". Giving a reason is handy but not compulsory.
