Paranthropus és un gènere probablement de la tribu biològica Australopithecini, que està relacionat amb els australopitecs.
El terme Para+anthropus etimològicament vindria a significar una línie paralel·la a la que porta a la humanitat. Aquest gènere no està acceptat per tots els investigadors.
En general les espècies integrants d'aquest gènere Paranthropus aethiopicus, P. boisei i P. robustus no està gaire clar que pertanyin al tronc filogenètic que portaria directament al gènere homo.
Totes aquestes espècies només s'han trobat a Àfrica i sembla que vivien en ambients més forestals que els australopitecs pròpiament dits.
