[edit] Plot
It is 8:00 p.m., and the Krusty Krab is closing, so Squidward is excited. But then, Tom comes to the door and makes an order. Squidward says "I can't hang out here all night, I've got a life!" But then Tom says "Well, fine! If you don't want my money!" Mr. Krabs realizes that more profit would be gained if it was open 24 hours a day, so he does that. SpongeBob is really excited, while Squidward is extremely annoyed. A bit later (probably at around 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM), the Krusty Krab is completey empty. Squidward decides to scare SpongeBob with tales of the Hash-Slinging Slasher. SpongeBob mistakes his name with different arrangements, (Such as Slash-Bringing Hasher, Sash-Wringing, Trash-Singing, Mash-Flinging, Flash-Springing, Wringing and Crash-Dinging) which annoys Squidward. Squidward then goes on to tell him that most people call him the "Ha--OOAAHH...!" because that is all they have to say before he gets them. He worked at the Krusty Krab years ago as a fry-cook, just like SpongeBob, only clumsier. One night, when he was cutting the patties, he cut off his own hand by mistake. It never grew back. He replaced the hand with a spatula. He was later killed by a moving bus and died. He was then fired at his funeral. Every Tuesday (Squidward asked what day it was to come up with that) night, his ghost comes to 'wreak his horrible vengeance'. There are three signs of his arrival, which are:
- - The lights will flicker on and off.
- - The phone will ring, and there will be nobody there.
- - He will arrive in the ghost of the bus which ran him over, and he crosses the road without looking both ways, because he's already dead. He opens the door, he slowly goes near the counter. HE GETS YA!
SpongeBob is scared of the story, and screams repeatedly, while Squidward laughs. Squidward is annoyed because of SpongeBob's screaming. He tells him to stop screaming and says that he was joking. SpongeBob says "Oh...", then starts laughing hysterically.
Later that night, at 3:00 AM, every customer is long gone. It is a dark night, with strange moaning noises that can be heard in the empty, ghostly streets. Squidward is reading a book when all of a sudden he hears a suction-cup like sound out of nowhere with a slippery-like noise, and it stops leaving Squidward to not care about. Then the sound goes off again, and Squidward begins to get scared, and the sound stops again and Squidward goes back to reading. Suddenly he hears the sound again and is really afraid. The camera zooms out and it shows SpongeBob with suction-cups attached to his shoes with a mop and bucket on the ceiling (without falling), meaning Spongebob is mopping the ceiling because there's never time to do it during the day. Spongebob looks down behind Squidward, and startles him. Now, everything that Squidward said that would happen earlier in the story actually happens. The lights flicker, the phone rings, and the walls ooze in green slime, but it wasn't in the story as Squidward realized they always do that. Then a bus comes, and he and Spongebob are suspicious (seeing as the buses don't run that late), then comes out the Hash-Slinging Slasher. As soon as they see him they panic, but Spongebob only does after a minute or so because he believes it's actually Squidward playing as the ghost, to which Squidward denies it and proves he isn't, Spongebob realises it's really the Hash-Slinging Slasher. He and SpongeBob are really scared, until they find out that the so-called "Hash-Slinging Slasher" is actually a person who wants a job application, and hung up on the phone because he was nervous.
This last revelation seems to explain everything, but suddenly the lights begin flickering on and off again. Everybody looks around, panicked, when suddenly they see Nosferatu (in a doctored image) rapidly flipping the light switch. Everybody points at him and shouts a friendly "Nosferatu!", after which Nosferatu (in another doctored image) smiles at them mischievously.
[edit] Trivia
- This episode is also known as "The Graveyard Shift".
- Patrick makes a small appearance towards the end.
- In the beginning of the episode, the sky is a deep blue. When SpongeBob takes out the trash, it seems black. When its 3 AM, the sky is a dark, dull gray.
- Patrick seems to wake up at 3:00 AM to eat Krabby Patties, in his bed, while still wearing pajamas.
- SpongeBob can eat his arms.
- Spongebob screams "AAHH!" 27 times, and laughs 8 times after he discovers Squidward's story is made up.
- SpongeBob thought that all living things could regenerate body parts.
- The walls oozing green slime is possibly a reference to one of the phenomena reported at 111 Ocean Avenue, Long Island, in the Amityville Horror.
- Count Orlok makes an appearance in this episode, possibly the only time which the show makes a direct reference to a movie.
- The DVD Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies features Tom Kenny and Rodger Bumpass recording the scene. It also includes storyboards of the episode and a deleted scene.
- There is a deleted scene of this episode. SpongeBob does another thing with the "at night" joke. This time he rips a section of the floorboard out, and "delivers the mail to Floorboard Harry". It can be seen on "Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies."
- Even though the mystery of the ringing phone and the mysterious figure on the bus are solved, two things aren't - why was there a bus at the Krusty Krab in the first place (Squidward states they don't), and why didn't the fish with a job application wait until the morning?
- This might be the example of irony in the joke, but when Spongebob was walking upside-down on the ceiling to mop it, the bucket of mop water was upside-down too. The water should've fallen out of the bucket. Or the bucket itself would fall off the ceiling.
- The episode contains music used in Night of the Living Dead.
- Closed-captioning error: the narration at the beginning was spoken by the usual French narrator, but the captions credited it to Squidward.
- The Galley Grub sign says Gally Grub at one point in the episode. Also, the Order Here sign said Order Hear at another point.
- To "sling hash" means to work in a restaurant.
- The Krusty Krab also stayed open 24 hours in Fear of a Krabby Patty.
[edit] Quotes

SpongeBob: He forgot the secret sauce? Squidward: No. SpongeBob: He didn't wash his hands? Squidward: No! SpongeBob: Irregular proportions? Squidward: NO!
- Squidward: Open twenty four hours, what a stupid idea! Who wants a Krabby Patty at three in the morning?
(Patricks house) (Alarm goes off) Patrick: Oh boy! THREE AM! (starts eating Krabby Patties)
- Guy: Are you open?
Squidward: Read the sign! Guy: I'll have a Krabby Patty deluxe, and a double chili kelp fry.
