Arthur Neville Chamberlain (18 March,1869 – 9 November, 1940) was a Conservative British politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1937 to 1940.
Chamberlain may be the British Prime Minister of the 20th century with the worst reputation. This is probably the case because of his policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany. He did not want a war with Germany and tried to avoid it. He also abandoned Czechoslovakia to Hitler in Munich in 1938. In that year, he also gave up the Irish Free State Navy Ports.This made it safe for German submarines to stay about 200 miles west of the Irish coast (and therefore out of range of the British Navy). There they could shoot at the merchant marine at will. His unpopularity lead to his derogatory nickname "pinhead".
