Brian Dubie (born March 9, 1959) is the 85th Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. He is a member of the Republican party.
Brian Dubie graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1977, before attending the United States Air Force Academy. Before graduation, Dubie transferred to the University of Vermont, where he completed his undergraduate degree.
Brian Dubie's previous political experience before running for Lieutenant Governor was serving on a Burlington, Vermont area school board. He won the 2002 Lt. Governor election due in part to a split liberal vote between Democrat Peter Shumlin and strong third-party candidate Anthony Pollina), he was easily re-elected along with incumbent governor Jim Douglas in the 2004 elections. Though he is known for his laid-back approach to campaigning and is neither extremely popular nor extremely unpopular, he has won a measure of respect from both sides of the aisle due to his initiatives to open increased trade between Vermont and various unlikely foreign trading partners, most notably Cuba. In 2005, a trade commission headed by Dubie agreed to sell cows, milk, and apples to the country in spite of the decades-old U.S. trade embargo against Fidel Castro's government.
Though he is now the lieutenant governor of a U.S. state and in spite of previous service on school boards and other small committees before his election in 2002, Dubie's primary job experience is as a pilot. He served in the Vermont Air National Guard, and has made a career out of flying for American Airlines as a captain. He also holds the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Lieutenant Governor Dubie was expected to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring independent Jim Jeffords; however, he withdrew from the race on October 26, 2005, in large part due to the popularity of opposition candidate, U.S. Representative Bernie Sanders, who ultimately won the election in November 2006.
Dubie is married and has four children: Jack, Emily, Matt, and Casey.
