Club Atlético Peñarol is a traditional football team in Montevideo, Uruguay. Peñarol as such was officially named on December 13th, 1913 by former members of the English "Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club" (CURCC). CURCC itself was founded on September 28, 1891. It´s a three-times World Champion football club.

Peñarol is named after its home neighborhood, which in turn takes its name from the town of Pinerolo, Italy. Peñarol's colors, yellow and black, derive from the colors used in railway signs and barriers.

[edit] Foundation date controversy

Peñarol claims to be the heir of the older club, CURCC, therefore laying claims to being the oldest club in Uruguay. This is contested by some, especially its rival Club Nacional de Football, who claim CURCC and Peñarol were two different clubs. Letter from Club Nacional de Football, for the 25 anniversary 1891-1916
