Catherine (Myst)

Catherine (D'ni transliteration: Kathrihn / Kæþrin, taken from the Rivenese name Katran) is a Rivenese woman who became the wife of Atrus and the mother of Achenar, Sirrus, and Yeesha.

Gehn, Writer of the Age of Riven, set up guilds modelled on those of the D'ni civilization. Katran was a promising student in his Guild of Writers whom Gehn decided to marry, though against her will. Atrus had also secretly come to Riven and there met Katran, whom he called "Catherine". They fell in love, and together they plotted to trap Gehn on Riven and escape from the Age.

Unbeknownst to Atrus, Katran had met with Ti'ana, Gehn's mother. Ti'ana and Katran together wrote the Age of Myst Island, proving Katran could also Write Ages. In the final battle with Gehn, Katran, Ti'ana and Atrus escaped to Myst, leaving Gehn trapped on Riven.

After their escape from Riven, Catherine gave birth to Sirrus and Achenar. These sons later rebelled against their parents and tricked Catherine into going to Riven, and trapping Atrus on K'veer, leading to the events of the games Myst and Riven. Afterward, the couple moved to Chroma'Agana and explored other Ages in their attempt to re-establish the D'ni civilization. After events of Myst: The Book of D'ni Catherine settled with Atrus in Tomahna and became the mother of Yeesha.

The Ages Catherine wrote were characterized by a dream-like quality. Her Ages include Serenia and a torus-shaped Age mentioned in the Book of Atrus. She also salvaged one of Gehn's discarded Ages to create Tay.

Atrus's opening letter in Myst V: End of Ages suggests that Katran died an untimely death between the events of Myst IV: Revelation and Myst V: End of Ages.
