[edit] Biography

Born in Bradford[2] of Jamaican parents, Donaldson played football from an early age and was spotted by Bradford City when playing as a midfielder for his school side.

[edit] Football career

[edit] Hull City

Donaldson made five first team appearances for Hull City, scoring one goal in a LDV Vans Trophy match against Port Vale on October 22, 2002.[3] Donaldson was sent out on loan to Harrogate Town, where he spent the 2002-03 season and was voted Conference North player of the month in October.[4] Donaldson then spent the following two years in brief spells at Scarborough and Halifax Town.[5]

At the end of the 2004-05 season Hull City released Donaldson, and he became one of several hundred professional footballers seeking a new club.

[edit] York City

Donaldson was signed by York City in June 2005 following his release by Hull City, with manager Billy McEwan saying: "He's a young player who is very hungry for his chance and he'll bring competition up front".[4] During his first season with York City, Donaldson was the clubs 'Clubman of the Year' and scored 18 goals.[2]

Donaldson has so far scored 21 goals in the Conference National during the 2006/07 season, meaning he is joint second top scorer of the league.[6] York City manager Billy McEwan compared Donaldson to Costa Rican footballer Paulo Wanchope in September 2006, saying: "When I first saw Clayton play he reminded me of a poor man's Paulo Wanchope, whom I first saw when Jim Smith asked me to look at him as a trialist during a reserve game at Manchester City and he, obviously, went on to become a really good player and enjoyed a great career. Clayton's gait and movement is very similar and, if he keeps improving, he can achieve things in the game as all our players can".[7] After York City's 2-0 loss against Oxford United in September 2006, manager Billy McEwan hit out against Donaldson's selfishness in front of goal saying it cost them the game.[8]

In late 2006 Donaldson became subject of much transfer speculation. Mick McCarthy of Wolves watched in November 2006 as Donaldson scored his 12th goal of the season, with Billy McEwan saying: "I brought Clayton here to build York up. We want to progress up the Conference and hopefully get back into the League. It's not my job to sell players unless we get a ridiculous offer and we could use that money to buy four players".[9] Donaldson was also watched by Scottish Premier League side Hibernian. In response to this speculation, Donaldson said: "I don't read too much into the speculation. I've heard it before and nothing has happened so I will just keep my head down and enjoy my football until a point comes when the manager or board come and tell me they have had an offer they want to consider".[10] On December 18, 2006 he rejected the offer of a new contract at York City, with his current deal at the club ending at the end of the 2006/07 season.[11]

Scunthorpe United[12] and Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry both watched Donaldson in December 2006. Fry was believed to have tabled a £100,000 bid for Donaldson, but that came nowhere near York City's valuation of £500,000 and thus the transfer was halted.[13][14] York City rejected a bid from Accrington Stanley for Donaldson in January 2007, with a cash-plus player offer being turned down. Accrington Stanley then upped their bid to a six-figure fee but were told that Donaldson was not for sale.[15] According to York City, Accrington Stanley offered just £25,000 plus a player in exchange for Donaldson.[16] York City manager Billy McEwan dismissed Accrington Stanley's £25,000 plus a player bid for Donaldson as an "embarrassment".[17] Donaldson was suspended for three games following his 51st-minute sending off for using his elbow in York City's 2-1 defeat at Kidderminster Harriers on January 20, 2007.[18] York City rejected a new bid by Scunthorpe United for Donaldson, with their approach falling short of the £500,000 York City's board have said would be needed to take Donaldson away from the club.[19] Donaldson was to return from his suspension for York City's reserves against Sheffield United at KitKat Crescent on February 6, 2007,[20] although the game was frozen off.[21] Donaldson returned for York City against Altrincham. On his return, Billy McEwan said: "He was going to play for the reserves this week and it was disappointing that game was postponed but he's had a run-out in a private game at Chesterfield so he won't be too rusty and will be coming back raring to go".[22] Donaldson scored for the first time for York City since his suspension against Cambridge United, scoring a hat-trick on March 13 2007.[23]

[edit] Hibernian

On January 29, 2007 Hibernian announced that Donaldson had signed for them on a pre-contract agreement. As Donaldson was 23 years old a month later, York City are not entitled to any compensation under FIFA regulations.[24] Hibernian manager John Collins said he was delighted Donaldson was coming to the club. He said: "Clayton has pace, lots of pace. He has scored goals in the past couple of seasons, albeit at a lower level. He is two-footed, but there is plenty of room for improvement as he is still just a young lad."[25]

York City turned down a £50,000 offer in January 2007 which would have allowed Hibernian to bring Donaldson to the club immediately.[26] Before leaving York City, Donaldson said: "I am still contracted at York and I will still give 100 per cent to York. My aim was always to honour my contract and I've still got a job to do. Some will say his mind is elsewhere' but people know what I'm like."[27]

York City boss Billy McEwan wants Donaldson to carry on playing for the club before he joins Hibernian at the end of the 2006/07 season but is demanding 100% commitment,[28] and has also revealed the club intend to fight against the "international loophole" that means Donaldson can join Hibernian for nothing at the end of the 2006/07 season.[29] Donaldson's agent, Andy Sprott, said suggestions he deliberately found Donaldson a deal in Scotland so York City would not receive any compensation was "not the case".[30]

[edit] International

Donaldson was named in the initial 22-man squad,[31] then eventually in the final 16-man squad[32] for the England National Game XI team which played The Netherlands in November 2006. Donaldson made his debut for the England National Game XI in this match, where he came on as a substitute in the last 15 minutes and set up Dagenham & Redbridge striker Craig Mackail-Smith for the final goal, which England won 4-1.[33]

"I thought I had a decent chance of starting so I was a bit disappointed when the side was named but really I was just happy to be there because I've missed out on the final squad a few times. The manager (Paul Fairclough) had also seen the other strikers play before but had never seen me play so he was only going on what scouts told him, but I got a winners' medal from the tournament and an England cap, which I was delighted with and I hope there's more to come"

- Donaldson on his inclusion to the team.[10]

Donaldson was included in the England National Game XI squad wich played Northern Ireland in February 2007.[34] Billy McEwan contemplated withdrawing Donaldson from the game, after Donaldson's comeback for York City against Altricham in February.

"We will try and pull him out of the Ireland game because he got kicked all over the place and I don't think it's right that we should send him there. He got targeted and was marked very tight and closely but you are going to get that and you need to be strong and win your individual battles. He was also rusty because he's not played football for three weeks. If he was razor-sharp he could have had four goals himself and I lost count of the number of one-on-ones we had. We scored four goals but we could have possibly had ten on another day"

- McEwan on possibly withdrawing Donaldson from the England National Game XI side to play Northern Ireland.[35]

Donaldson did play in the game against Northern Ireland, but was substituted after 50 minutes. England lost the match 3-1, and Donaldson was substituted for Paul Benson, who scored England's goal two minutes after coming on.[36]
