Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shortcut:
WP:SPLICE

This page was originally for listing cut and paste moves which could not be repaired due to a then-extant technical limitation. The limitation has since been removed, but this page is still available if you find a cut-and-paste move, and are not able to repair it yourself. (There is a procedure for doing it, but 1. only admins can do it, and 2. it's a bit tricky.)

Currently the only technical limitation is that category and image description pages can't be moved.

Admins: please read Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves and Wikipedia:Moving guidelines for administrators.

Contents

[edit] The procedure

  • Place a {{db-histmerge|NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM}} template at the new location of the article which has been moved through cut and pasting, i.e. on the article where the pasting was done.
  • If the issue is clear-cut (straight up cut and paste move to a better title), having this speedy delete tag on the page should be enough. In more complex cases (explained at Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves), please leave a description of the problem under the "Repair requests" section.
  • An admin will look the pages over and perform whatever tasks are necessary.
  • Once this is done, the admin will post the result here.
  • Old requests will be removed after 30 days.

[edit] Repair requests

Please add new requests to the top of the New Requests section. Thanks.

[edit] New requests

[edit] Completed requests

  • Last year, as a relative newcomer unaware of how to move pages properly, I redirected a lot of articles about rally races to page titles which didn't include the title sponsors. Since then, most of my moves have been fixed over time, and I can now only find three still outstanding. Two of them I've tagged as CSD G6, but the third one is a bit much for the {{db-histmerge}} (at least as far as I can see): I redirected the original Supermag Rally Italia Sardinia to Rally Italia Sardegna, then had a change of mind and redirected that to Rally d'Italia Sardegna, where it now resides. So, all three pages now need merged to undo my damage. No chronological overlaps or other complications, but I proffer my humblest apologies anyway, and assure you that I know better now. --DeLarge 15:09, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
    • No problem. They've all now been merged. Cool Hand Luke 17:39, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Herbert Garrison was cut from Mrs. Garrison. This should be easy to merge, but the redirects should be separated from the combined history (the most recent edit at Mrs. Garrison and the oldest edit at Herbert Garrison). Atomic1609 14:49, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Chef (South Park) was cut from Chef (South Park character). This should be easy to fix, but the oldest 3 edits from Chef (South Park) and the most recent edit from Chef (South Park character) are redirects so merging these edits would make the combined page history inconsistent. Atomic1609 10:53, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Done, the redirect histories are still there, inconsistent histories aren't really a problem. - Bobet 13:58, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Richard and Mrs. Tweek was cut from Mr and Mrs Tweek. This should be easy to merge, but the redirects should not be merged. Atomic1609 14:37, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
    • It's been done by User:Llama man. The redirect histories were merged there too, but it doesn't make much difference, since keeping those intact isn't very relevant (there's no creative process involved in changing redirect targets to point to the correct article) and having them kept separate isn't a big issue. - Bobet 13:51, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • When someone merged Windows Update into Microsoft Update, it looked like a cut-and-paste move to me. However, a new article was started over the resulting redirect at Windows Update. Jesse Viviano 02:09, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
    • This is tricky. I understand wanting to have Windows update with its just own history, and it's certainly possible to selectively delete and just merge the pre-Dec 2006 Windows edits with Microsoft Update, but I'm not sure we'd want to do that. They were seperate articles at the time and had divergent history. Perhaps we could move the merged history out from Windows Update and into some thrid location? Cool Hand Luke 00:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Not a cut and paste move, and I don't see anything that needs to be done. The page histories are kept for attribution reasons, and anyone looking at the history of Microsoft Update will see that there was a content merge from Windows Update and can find the relevant history at the latter article. - Bobet 13:37, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Plans (album) to Plans — So far as I can see, the article was originaly at Plans, then moved to Plans (album), then cut and pasted back to Plan sometime later. PC78 23:26, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Done. - Bobet 13:29, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • On 5 March 2007, the contents of Ercole d'Este I were pasted into a new page, Ercole I, Duke of Ferrara. A redirect was placed at the top of the "Ercole d'Este I" page, but the contents of the page were not removed. On 7 March 2007, I cut and pasted the only contents of the "Ercole d'Este I" Talk page, a WPBio tag, to the new article, before I thought better of it, and realized that the article move had been a cut and paste that should be repaired. Please note, there is also an Ercole I d'Este page that redirects to Ercole d'Este I. I am not sure what the best choice actually is for the name of the article. I've taken a look at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles), "Other non-royal names"; that section might suggest "Ercole d'Este, <ordinal number> Duke of Ferrara", but as far as I know, the Dukes of Ferrara were not numbered in the same way that the British peerage is. 15th edition Britannica uses Ercole I d'Este. Articles on other members of the Category:House of Este are also titled using "<Given name> <Roman-style ordinal number> d'Este". So, by that logic, I would opt for Ercole I d'Este, which is currently one of the redirects.
Thanks for taking a look at this, and "fixing" it in whatever way can best be managed with the tools available. Lini 12:43, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

76.22.4.86 18:25, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Should also consider moving it to Nancy Campbell Cartwright--a valid way to disambiguate people that avoids the whole 'actor versus actress' issue. 76.22.4.86 00:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Seems like a sensible suggestion, but at least they're all merged in one article now (although I inelegantly forgot to siphon off the history of the disambig, which were only maybe ten in number). Cool Hand Luke 00:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Yuu Watase is a cut-and-paste move from Yu Watase, performed two weeks ago; the associated talk pages need to be fixed as well. —TangentCube /c /t  18:42, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
  • User:WIKISCRIPPS 07 seems to be fond of moving via copy/paste for whatever reasons. Because of this I have 5 requests for history merges for certain radio station articles. They are as follows.
  • Those are just the ones I've run into. Thanks.RobDe68 20:02, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Robde68
  • Jacksonville Municipal Stadium and Alltel Stadium. Moved from the latter to the former using cut&paste by User:Gundamforce on 7 February 2007. I don't have a strong opinion on which is better (maybe the question should be posted on WP:RM), but the histories need to be merged back together, perhaps with appropriate follow-up involving a wet trout. 76.22.4.86 00:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Someone cut and pasted Virgin Media Plc to Virgin Media Inc, after today's mergers of NTL and Telewest. As a result, the talk and page history is at the old page. If someone could sort out the database there. I have added the relevant dhhistmerge tag to the page but can't do the admin work because I am not an administrator. Thanks --tgheretford (talk) 13:00, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Bonaguil Castle was pasted to the new page Château de Bonaguil (correct title) when I did a major expansion of the topic, using the relevant French wikipedia article. I edited the Bonaguil Castle article to a redirect, but in my ignorance omitted to transfer the original history into the new page. (I know now, thanks to another user, that I should have MOVED the article.) Emeraude 16:01, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Done. Snoutwood 21:42, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
  • OK, so I totally screwed up a move, and while I have the text fixed, I don't have the history fixed. We are straightening out three articles. Sparing you the gory details, I created a new article called bit (horse). It's OK, it can stay, along with its history. However, there temporarily was an article created called bit (horse --note that there is a parentheses missing in the title, and that article happens to be a move of the article bit mouthpiece. Well, I realized that it was a mistake to do this and yet I couldn't move the article back to its original title (I did an intermediate edit of the redirect...arrgh!). So, I did a raw cut and paste of the text back into bit mouthpiece so it was back to its original form, save for a minor wikilink edit.
  • Long story short, the history of bit mouthpiece needs to be put back too. Thanks. Montanabw 07:43, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Easily done, thanks for catching your mistake and reporting it! No worries, I've done the same thing (many times) myself. All done! Snoutwood 09:35, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
