David Platt is a fictional character on the soap opera Coronation Street. He is currently portrayed by Jack P. Shepherd, who is the second actor to play the character, and is almost three years older than the character. He is named after the footballer of the same name.

David is the son of Martin and Gail Platt. When Gail found out she was pregnant with David she almost had an abortion as she and Martin had not been together very long and she did not believe that Martin was ready to be a father. However Martin wanted the baby and David was born on Christmas Day 1990. Martin also took on a fatherly role towards David's half-siblings, Nick Tilsley and Sarah-Louise Platt.

When Sarah gave birth to a baby girl Bethany Platt, aged just thirteen, David became an uncle at nine-and-a-half. He was jealous of Bethany at first but grew to love her. Shortly after Bethany's birth, Gail and Martin split up due to Martin having an affair. David was devastated. His parents have remained close friends.

David's first major storyline was when his stepfather Richard attempted to drown him and the rest of the family by driving their car into a river. David, Gail, Sarah and Bethany survived; Richard managed to kill only himself.

Martin moved away to Liverpool with new girlfriend Robyn and David is missing his dad. He took a strong dislike to his mum's new boyfriend, Phil Nail and caused a lot of trouble for him and Gail. Phil proved to be particularly violent towards David and Gail forced him to move out.

David began sending cards to his family, which were signed by his dead stepfather Richard Hillman. Gail had no idea it was him, and there were many suspects, including Eileen, Phil and Violet. David's scheme was finally uncovered on 21st May 2006 when Gail trapped him by telling him it was Richard's birthday when really Richard's birthday was in December. David was forced to go down to the Police station, and lost the trust of his entire family, but spent a couple of weeks trying to prove himself to them.

In early summer 2006 David began truanting from school, which resulted in him being tutored at home, firstly by his mother, then by Ken Barlow. In September 2006, David began going back to school, although he was later found truanting again. David admitted that he was being bullied at school. Gail kept David off school and took him to see the headmaster (Mr. Griffin) who said he couldn't help David unless he told him the bullies names. David refused. At another meeting with the school headmaster, Gail was told she could be prosecuted for not letting David have an education, which resulted in David giving the headmaster the bullies names, albeit falsely.

Gail then took David to see the school Deputy-Head, Miss Smith (Mr Griffin was away at the time) who said that she had asked anyone who could be involved in bullying David. She didn't get any information on the bullying, and even though Gail said she would always be on David's side, he didn't believe her. Later, at home, David admitted to Gail that he was never being bullied at all, which left wondering why David was truanting from school.

David has now got a reputation with Coronation street viewers, for being 'evil' and 'conniving'. In October 2006 David, still truanting, found out his close friend Maria Sutherland was having a fling with Charlie Stubbs. On October 29 Charlie bundled David into the back of his van, but the ploy was rumbled when Liam Connor flung open the door and saved David. A day later Charlie got David to go to Maria's flat under false pretences, and then tried to drown David in the bath.

David had a close escape when they were interrupted by Maria. Maria, horrified by finding Charlie holding the lad's head under water, told Tracey everything.

In December 2006, David came into the possession of Ivy Brennan's diary, which Sophie Webster had found in the Battersby's loft, Ivy being the mother of Gail's first husband & grandmother David's elder brother & sister. Sitting with friend, Maria, on Christmas Eve he discovered, his mother had wanted him aborted, but his father Martin had stopped her. He wrapped the diary as a Christmas present for his mother Gail and after producing it on Christmas day announcing to the entire family and the Webster's about his mothers original plans for him, he then revealed his Gran's affair with Bill Webster to Bill's unsuspecting wife Maureen who had turned up unnanounced, therefore ruining Christmas for everyone present.

Tracy eventually killed David's former-torturer, Charlie Stubbs, and at the funeral, David moved in for a kiss with grieving Maria Sutherland. Disgusted by this, Maria told David to stay away from her, and as a revenge routine, David announced that Charlie tried to kill him to his shocked family. He progressed further, however, claiming he witness Charlie's death at the hands of Tracy Barlow and that it was self defence. He began to blackmail Tracy, demanding she 'be nice to him' is she wants him to give evidence in court. Tracy tried paying him off, buying him gifts but what David really wanted was to sleep with her. As David became more obsessed with Tracy like he did with Maria, she agrees after first laughing at him.

She managed to keep him waiting until the day before the trial and after lying for her in court, David decided that she kept her side of the bargain even offering to wait for her if went to prison but she told him it was never going to happen and that she used him before walking off. Despite this, David was still outraged when she was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, shouting at the Judge that she was mad.[1]
