There is already a fairly long page on Nicolas Poussin and link to one of his famous paintings et in Arcadia ego. I just checked in 2 encyclopedias and they spell it Nicolas and not Nicholas. The error seems to be common on the Web though, so there should be some way to account for this here.
Hi, I've deleted Lower New York Bay.. If you need any more pages deleted, please list them at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Thanks. Angela. 18:32, Jan 15, 2004 (UTC)
Good stuff! More Wikipedians should follow your linkage program, as outlined on your User page IMO. There seems to be a gratification, however, in creating stubs. If the soul of Wikipedia is in its hypertext links, then it is a microcosm of the Net, is it not? I tend to be too randomly inspired by 'Recent Additions'. Wetman 05:49, 16 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the note re: Jerry Lawler. Always nice to know some of the sily cleanup work I do is appreciated. :) Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way! You seem to have taken on a lot of work early--good for you. Keep it up! Jwrosenzweig 19:56, 16 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Much goodness dude! When you are done making all the Islands of Rhode, perhaps you could add them to List of islands of the United States? Muchas gracias!! jengod 09:47, Jan 21, 2004 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for the notes re User:Jengod/A brief history of martial America. I'm working something out, I'm just not sure what. :) I spent a lot of time straightening out Military History of the United States and realized there was a lot of other stuff that was a part of this, I dunno, strain of American history. jengod 06:05, Jan 22, 2004 (UTC)

I have no idea what the little dotted circle means, but bravo on Golden Spike and continue being your fabulous self. You're motivating the rest of us towards greatness. :) jengod 01:18, Jan 25, 2004 (UTC)
Americans get in many too many tussles. It's hard to know where to start. There was also the time Texas invaded New Mexico...*sigh* I'll sort it all out eventually. :) jengod 18:28, Jan 26, 2004 (UTC)
Yes, indeed--how these things came about. I suddenly find myself obsessed with American territorial history and am even further disgruntled with my public school high-school history classes. Everything is just useless minutae and rote memorization until you put it in context, and I'll be darned if I ever had the slightest idea what the Compromise of 1850 was good for until I started researching New Mexico Territory--there's a million examples. By the way, I've adopted your scheme for page edits--only ones that I already have some connection too--for the most part ;)--otherwise I might never stop editing Wikipedia, and I now and again I do need to recall the existence of the outside world. jengod 19:35, Jan 26, 2004 (UTC)
I like the idea for the Acropolis photo that you talked about on Talk:Athens. Please upload the photo. WhisperToMe 01:47, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Nice work on The Da Vinci Code, but we normally only put links to terms the first time they appear in an article, not every time. RickK 02:17, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Great job on the Oregon Country/Oregon Territory issue! I grew up in Washington and even taught Washington State History, and yet that's the sort of thing I always forget unless reminded. Very glad to see your eagle eyes caught it, Jwrosenzweig 18:32, 30 Jan 2004 (UTC)

What happened to the UT logo that you uploaded at http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/7/7d/Wpdms_ut_logo.jpg ? It is still referenced by the article University of Texas at Austin but the image is not available. Bevo 05:32, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Re List of Iowa rivers: I'm very sorry if I sounded offensive in my edit summary before. I go through a lot of articles that have little things wrong with them and the net sum is that sometimes I get rather annoyed. I try to keep my edit summaries neutral too but sometimes... With unreserved apologies Dysprosia 06:28, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the note re: Dick Van Dyke....when I saw him on Special:Wantedpages I knew I couldn't leave it there. I feel as though the present article, though, is pretty terse...maybe you can add a bit more about him? :) I wish I knew more--would add it myself. Happy editing, Jwrosenzweig 19:44, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Hey, better a Vandal than a Visigoth. ;-) Thanks for the laugh. I noticed my problem instantly, but before I could reverse it, of course, model Wikipedian Anthony Di Pierro exposed me for the reckless problem I really am. Still chuckling about it, (because honestly, how are the two of them not amusing, even when infuriating?) Jwrosenzweig 23:16, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Good job on the St. Valentine's Day article! It really needed that rewrite. -- Kimiko 10:02, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
It seems as though that only the negative POV regarding President Bush's service is being maintained here. Snipers have been removing any positive information to skew the entry to make more of a contrast with Senator Kerry's service. Believe me, Senator Kerry doesn't need this "help". If Senator Kerry wants to win the next election, he should start proposing solutions to all the "problems" he's been complaining about. Then, we can all get down to an honest discussion about who should be the next President of the United States. -- Firstlensman 21:46, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I'm sorry. The information in your article was not completely accurate however. I changed the article to exclude the redundant data while including the information that was not already there. NASA 21:20, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Live oak
no edit conflict at all - I too had just woken up and was tinkering a bit, that's all. I think I may have messed up the taxobox format out of ignorance, I've just been looking at the WikiProject Tree of Life examples and I haven't been following them exactly. We could probably do with some more discussion on that page... but I'm going back to bed now! seglea 10:52, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Ah, good one disambig-ing North River. I was thinking of that, but you beat me to it! Cecropia 18:45, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Rivers
You do know that we do not have any policy that requires disambiguating rivers on one page and, in fact, Wikipedia:WikiProject Rivers suggest a different scheme (than either yours or mine). We have numerous other pages describing multiple rivers on one page. In some cases it may be necessary - see talk on wikiproject. Rmhermen 19:42, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC)
- I don't think the Wikiproject formula is the best approach. Please join in the discussion there and let's work out some workable rules before we all start changing things in our own directions. Rmhermen 20:09, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Developing
You don't need to be a sysop. The usual way to get started is:
- Make your own test installation of MediaWiki
- Write some code and submit a patch or two to the mailing list (or directly to a developer)
- Request CVS access
- At some stage in the future, you may need shell access on the servers
IMHO the best place for developer communication is #mediawiki on irc.freenode.net. Feel free to drop in and ask questions. There's also the mailing list wikitech-l. -- Tim Starling 23:53, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Decumanus
thanks for your help here. I must have mistyped something in the searchbox somewhere. It does seem that the "t" spelling is the right one (not to mention the one *he* used).
I'll kill the Lorenz page and merge with Lorentz.
best
Robinh 22:33, 28 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Hi again. I know about Edward Lorenz. I went to a public seminar once, while an undergraduate, expecting to hear about relativity and reminiscences about Albert Einstein.
The seminar was about butterflies and a particular set of three coupled ODEs which gave weird results. Heigh ho (a very very good speaker though).
Oh yes, and you're right about Lorenz invariance of the Lorentz force (duh! since when was force a four vector?). I'll dig out my Feynmann and update the page one day.
best wishes

- I haven't forgot about this, just dragging my feet. Actually, I've been researching the distinctions between organized/unorganized and incorporated/unincorporated. [edit] Quant
- Funny. I heard it a lot in the late 1990s when I was working at UT in Austin. It seemed like many of the Russians especially were interested in becoming "quants". It's actually much more respectful a word than your impression of it. :) -- Decumanus 21:53, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I didn't say it was disrespectful. I said it is not generally known among statisticians or mathematicians; it is jargon used only in certain professional communities. Michael Hardy 21:56, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Colorado Mineral Belt
I think I am the first editor who introduced this topic. It is real enough in the mining history of early Colorado. The early mining towns, now mostly ghost towns or ski resorts almost all fall in this zone, the exception is Cripple Creek. I am a Colorado native whose grandfather was a miner as were numerous other relatives. Fred Bauder 00:27, Mar 9, 2004 (UTC)

Hmmmm.... Doesn't seem possible. If it's a United States Ship (USS), it can't possibly be Her Majesty's Australian Ship (HMAS) at the same time, and vice-versa. Stan (who created the articles) said it was an unintended side-effect of his scripting software. Best. Tannin 07:48, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: McDonald Observatory
AFAIK, no public education system can restrict the distribution of informational data as they receive funds from the local government (ie: capital of the people). Such is the case of the University of Texas at Austin and the McDonald Observatory. We had a similar case a few weeks ago in relation to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez; see [2].
Basically, these type of systems hold propietary rights on all of their publications, but can only restrict press articles and works published by their employees. They can't restrict information published by the institution. For example, I couldn't upload certain images of the Lowell Observatory because it is owned by the University of Chicago — a private institution.
I also had a connection with one public education system, and when I had to do work for it, I had to state that the information had propietary rights but it was not restricted of any sort of distribution. It is something similar —but not entirely equal— to the Freedom of Information Act.
Hope that helps!
--Maio 16:09, Mar 13, 2004 (UTC)
- Well I'm not at all convinced by your reasoning. The law in Texas may be quite different than in Puerto Rico. I think the University and the various departments are perfectly capable of holding copyright. But knock yourself out. It's up to you. -- Decumanus 16:40, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)
IANAL, but if you are really concerned about this, you may want to talk with User:Jamesday (NAL either) or User:Alex756 (AL IRL). They could help you deciding if this is a possible copyright infringement or not. =) --Maio 17:19, Mar 13, 2004 (UTC)
