A Driving Van Trailer or DVT is a purpose-built railway vehicle that allows the driver to operate a locomotive from the other end of a train. Trains operating with a DVT therefore do not require the locomotive to run round to the opposite end of the train. Unlike many other control cars, DVTs resemble locomotives and thus when the train is operating in "push" mode it does not appear to be traveling backwards.

[edit] Development
DVTs and locomotives operate in push-pull formation utilising a Time-Division Multiplexer to send control signals along the "RCH" jumper cables that run the length of the train. This allows the same cables to be used for lighting and the public address system, as well as driver-guard signalling. In addition to the driver's cab, the DVT has luggage space and a guard's office.
When a train is operated by a DVT, the control signals are encoded and multiplexed onto the cables by the TDM equipment in the DVT. At the locomotive, these signals are demultiplexed by the TDM equipment, and the signals are used to control the locomotive. The air braking system is operated directly from whichever cab the driver is driving from. If the TDM fails and cannot be reconfigured, the train may still operate, but if the DVT is leading, it will be necessary to uncouple the locomotive and attach it to the front of the train.
The British DVT was developed from the DBSO, but unlike its predecessor, it was built specifically for this purpose. The original DVTs were designed to be used with British Rail Mark 2 D, E & F and British Rail Mk 3 coaches, and the second design with British Rail Mk 4 coaches, which have a narrower profile. This enables it to be converted to tilting operation if required in the future.
[edit] United Kingdom
DVTs can be seen in service in the UK with GNER, Virgin Trains and 'one' Anglia. Locomotive types which have been used to provide the power include Class 67 diesel locomotives and Classes 86, 87, 89, 90, and 91 electric locomotives.

[edit] Republic of Ireland
Iarnród Éireann have a fleet of five Mk3 DVTs, numbered 6101 to 6105. These DVTs were originally used on Dublin suburban services and Limerick to Limerick Junction connections in conjunction with the General Motors 121 Class locomotives but have now been converted to standard InterCity coaches powered by the GM 201 Class locomotives.
There are a number of differences between the Irish push-pull Mk3s and the standard Mk3s. An underfloor generator provides electrical power to the coaches, unlike on the standard Mk3s which use a special generator van. This generator is not as powerful as that used in the Mk3 generator vans; as a result, Irish Mk3 push-pull based rolling stock does not have air conditioning and have opening windows instead. There is also a 70mph speed restriction imposed on the train when the DVT is leading, when the locomotive is leading there is no such restriction; standard line speeds apply.
CAF DVTs have been introduced on Dublin to Cork services on the Irish Rail network with power being provided by the 201 Class locomotive. These DVTs (numbered 4001-4008) incorporate the generator van used on previous Irish Rail stock and do not include passenger accommodation, but do appear to have the ability to be refitted if necessary.
