Refs

I was going to question your recent edit to move the reference after the period. But I find I've been doing it wrong all along. :( It took me a lot of digging to confirm though. It should be on WP:CITE, but is only on sub articles. I've requested the rule be added to WP:CITE. And you could use WP:CITE instead of MOS when you next clean up after me. ;) I'm guessing it's going to take me a while to finish cleaning up after myself. --J Clear 18:15, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Footnotes#Where to place ref tags which is part of WP:MOS, I didn't want to dig for the ref, but I didn't think it would be contested. Sometimes it's hard to find those things, I was bit by it before so I remember the guideline, but not where its from. --Dual Freq 18:19, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
That's one of the sub articles I vaugely referred to. And you do have to dig for it. I didn't intend to gig you for not looking it up before ... well at least not much. ;) Nice to know I wasn't the only one. --J Clear 18:55, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Talk:Rush Limbaugh#A case for semi-protection

I would recommend you take your argument to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection so that an administrator who has not been involved in the Fox-Limbaugh dispute that prompted much of the vandalism can make the needed judgment call. Copying the list of anon edit links from your argument to the request should be enough to justify semi-protection for a week or two. --Allen3 talk 00:23, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I thought I'd bring it up there first to see if there were some other opinions. --Dual Freq 00:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

My RfA passed with a tally of 71/1/0. Thank you very much for your support and the kind words. We haven't crossed paths much since the lighthouse days, but I do see your signature around. Illinois 11th congressional district election, 2006

Thank you for your edit to this page. The paragraph you edited was copied directly from United States House elections, 2006; you might want to edit it there as well. John Broughton | Talk 15:50, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what they want in those two pages, but it certainly was not NPOV in its original form. It looked like a list of reasons to vote for Pavich, not an article describing the congressional race. It certainly could use more work, but I wouldn't know where to start. --Dual Freq 23:09, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
The article on the 11th congressional district is very raw - per the template on the talk page and the italicized comment in the article, it's due for extensive work, hopefully in the near future, and my intent is to provide a lot of help/guidance to those editing this and similar pages. So my note to you was just to let you know that if you didn't like the lead paragraph in that article, which I copied from another article (and you then edited), you probably would want to visit that other page as well. Sorry if that wasn't clear. John Broughton | Talk 22:37, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Limbaugh TV appearances

Take a look at what I did with this section earlier today before Eleesomerary apparently reverted it. I removed all the irrelevant (and of questionable accuracy) detail and summarized it to a list. Also removed the reference to a Saturday night live skit who's only connection to Limbaugh is about 4 seconds of him taking drugs. If you want to not even include Letterman in the list of appearances, I am willing to be convinced of the idea, though I don't see the harm in listing it as long as it doesn't turn into a paragraph about the appearance (because it is'tt important enough to warrant a descriptive paragraph). What do you think. I'd like to tighten up this area and remove the attacks and puffery from it. Caper13 05:08, 21 November 2006 (UTC) [1]

I saw the list, although I agree in principle with the notability issue, I'm not sure about making lists in articles. I'm afraid if the article has a list it will encourage editors to add every single insignificant pop-culture reference or show that Limbaugh has been parodied on. I've seen articles with huge lists of pop-culture refs and they just seem to get longer and longer and no one wants to remove individual items. I think prose is better in this situation, but only notable items should be included. As far as notable TV, The WKRP thing might deserve mention along with the shows he actually was guest starred on like Hearts Afire, and The Drew Carey Show. The guest hosting gig for Pat Sajak's show is probably notable, but maybe not the incident in the article. The rest aren't very notable, who hasn't been parodied on the Simpsons or SNL. --Dual Freq 12:23, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok, thats a valid point, especially for something that could be completely excised from the article without really affecting anything. I deleted the reference to SNL in the new version as he is not the subject of the skit and is only present for a few seconds.Caper13 04:17, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Talk- page signatures

Should you ever again come across a talk-page entry of mine that I've overlooked signing, I'd much rather that you just notified me of it, so that I can take care of it myself. (Chances are that I'll notice my own omission before too long, anyhow.) Thanks. Lonewolf BC 07:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

It's nothing personal, everybody forgets a signature every now and then, I was just clarifying the talk page. I did think it was ironic that you signed for someone else but didn't sign for yourself in that edit. [2] That's what Template:Unsigned2 is for, it's not an insult, just a signature. --Dual Freq 11:24, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Heh. Yes, that was a bit ironic. I guess it was the distraction of messing around with that that caused me to forget my own signing. However, maybe it's just me, but I find that the use of that template carries a slight implication that someone was trying (most ineffectively) to hide their identity -- well, their WP identity, that is. I don't suppose that you meant it so, but that is part of the reason I'd prefer to sign for myself, should a like circumstance happen again. Anyhow, 'nuff said. -- Lonewolf BC 04:33, 23 November 2006 (UTC)  ;-)

WAAS cleanup in progress

I've been working on a pretty significant cleanup of WAAS in my personal sandbox. Would you mind taking a look and telling me what you think? User:Davandron/WAAS

It's at the 90% complete point; I haven't tried to tackle the history section and I have some references to add. I'm also on the fence regarding the accuracy comparison info belonging or not belonging.

Comments can go on my talk page, the sandbox's discussion, or here (I'll watch all three). Thanks! Davandron | Talk 18:26, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Illinois universities

Thanks for the polite edit summary. [3] My main point was/is that the Illinois article doesn't need to be a list article for universities as it was in the past. It already points to the main list and in the past 6 months or year anons routinely add / subtract their favorite / least favorite school from the deliberately short list. I was simply restoring the article to the balance that it had prior to some anon swapping in SIU. Illinois is a 45k article that is already list heavy. --Dual Freq 05:23, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I see your point. Feel free to trim things down. I was merely correcting a factual error, but then I went a bit further, attempting (perhaps unnecessarily) to clarify things. Unschool 08:31, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Knox-class frigates

I see that you have been working on some of the Knox-class frigates. I have also been making these pages somewhat of a project lately, since most of them are stubs, as you know. One thing I have been doing is searching USN archives for more pictures. I have a few yet to post and I would like to find pictures for all of them if they exist. Just this morning I discovered the (somewhat small) group of pictures on Commons, including the one that you discovered that I had duplicated: Image:Knox FFs x 4.jpg. One thing we need to do is to eventually put {{infobox ship}} on all of these pages. Is there any particular area that you are working on? I don’t want to duplicate efforts with you. •DanMS 19:11, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/ has a bunch of images, I normally upload the full / highest resolution image they have. I created commons:Category:Knox class frigates and uploaded a bunch of the images listed there, I'm not saying they are perfect, but I think they are good examples of captions for DOD images. As for the recent edits, sometimes I go through the pages linked to Image:IIH.png or the newer Image:Insert image here.svg and replace that image with an image of the ship. I could probably help with those sometime, I guess I'd put links to appropriate http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/index.htm and http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/ pages. Do you have an example infobox with the typical Knox class characteristics, weapons, sensors etc? I suppose there are some minor variations, but it would be nice to get one master one to copy from then fill in the correct dates from NVR. Should be able to put those in fairly quickly one you have a good one to copy. --Dual Freq 19:51, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I didn't see an example infobox, so I tried to make one at USS Reasoner (FF-1063). I'll have an image there shortly. --Dual Freq 21:24, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I hope we are not working at cross-purposes! I just posted an infobox at USS Roark (FF-1053). I filled it out as much as I could for now, subject to verification. •DanMS 21:55, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

The sensors and armament may be problematic. The AN/SPS-10 was replaced by the AN/SPS-67 in the 1980s, unfortunately it will be impossible to tell which had what radar, since it sounds like initially the -67 used the old -10 antenna.[4] I assume all were upgraded prior to decommissioning, but saying "all" is a pretty broad brush to paint with. Lots of other little variations, too. 1052-1083 had BPDMS, the rest did not. Some had CIWS, I thought they all received CIWS, but this image of Knox's decommissioning shows the BPDMS still installed, no CIWS. 37 of them had variable depth sonar, the rest may have had towed array sonar instead. I guess I'm partial to the one that I made, but yours has more detailed propulsion, displacement and length. I guess the rest is just a question of using feet or ' and spelling out one or 1x and inclusion of MK designations for launchers. I do recommend wikilinking the weapons that have articles. Also the date in the flag template is the decommissioning year. --Dual Freq 22:49, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

If you would like to collaborate on this, why don’t I take the low numbers (1052–1074) and you take the high numbers (1075–1097) so that we don’t work against each other. You can fill in any extra info that you find later. It sounds like you know of more sources than I know right now. I just now completed USS Knox (FF-1052). Also, I didn’t understand the comment about the flag year. •DanMS 22:57, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I see in the picture of Reasoner that the BPDMS/Sea Sparrow launcher was replaced with CIWS. It may be that in some cases we will have to use the latest pictures to see if the CIWS was installed. •DanMS 23:07, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, I can do the high ones. I plan on assuming most details are the same and changing just the dates, pic and builder. The weapon system thing can be corrected later if there is an oddball out there. --Dual Freq 23:24, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Commons

I have not done anything with Commons besides use the images there. How does it work? Does one create an account and log in just the same as Wikipedia? Do I use the same account name? Do you recommend uploading images to Commons rather than to Wikipedia? •DanMS 23:16, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Commons is where all public domain images are preferred to be uploaded. If you upload them here, someone else will eventually copy them over. That's why I upload them to commons, so someone else won't have to move them later. Uploading them to commons allows other projects to use the same file, like French, German or any other language version of Wikipedia. You have to create a commons account, I just used the same name that I used here. Passwords don't have to match each other either. The big problem with commons is image name, you have to use a name that is not used on wikipedia or you won't be able to see the commons image. It's only happened to me once, so if there is no image of a Frigate here, your pretty much safe to use what ever name you want. --Dual Freq 23:24, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Knox Again

It looks like you are making good progress with the infoboxes for the Knox frigates. If you want to do the rest of them that I was going to do, go ahead. Although I would get to them eventually, I have some other pages that I am working on at the moment, so go ahead and finish the frigates if you like. •DanMS 21:09, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

It'll probably take the rest of the week since I'll be slowing down once the work week begins. I'll continue down the list and do as many as I have time for. The CIWS / BPDMS issue is pretty easy to figure out, but the variable depth sonar will be harder to find out. I'll have to go through them at a later date if I can find out which ships had tower array and which had VDS. There are still plenty to do, I don't want to take away a project of yours. --Dual Freq 21:36, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I do not feel a proprietary interest in the Knox pages. It was just something I saw that needed to be done. If I get the time, I will start from the bottom (1052) and work upwards until I get to where you left off, if you have not finished by then. •DanMS 00:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

All now have images. Infoboxes and external links next up. --Dual Freq 03:04, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Looks like all the infoboxes are fairly standardized now, there is still the matter of the Variable depth sonar to sort out. I'm going to have to do some reading to see which had it and which didn't. Navsource says AN/SQS-35 IVDS in FF-1052, 1056, 1063-1071, 1073-1076, 1078-1097, but I should probably confirm it. Also some are missing mottos yet, any idea where to find the rest? --Dual Freq 00:11, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I think our time would be better spent looking for real things to add to the articles rather than arguing over an appearance in a single episode of a cartoon. --Dual Freq 02:41, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

I would agree, provided that said appearance is given at least a brief mention. It certainly doesn't require the paragraph that was there previously. I wonder if there are any other fictional histories involving these two ships? EASports 02:43, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Please stop reverting articles with no explanation

Hi, I am new to the wiki, can you tell me how I report your starting a revert war in the Rush Limbaugh page? I think you are abusing your power. I thought that wiki editors were supposed to improve content and not just delete it. I left a request on the talk page but you ignored that. If you think the content should be moved, how come you are deleting it and not moving it? I am going to revert it one more time. I think it belongs on his page because it is associated with his website. If you wish to move it to the show page, please do so, but please do not just delete it. Don't you agree that goes against all wiki guidelines? If you just delete it again, I will not revert it, but I will report you as starting a revert war and ask for arbitration. Again, why are you deleting and not improving? # Assume good faith # No personal attacks # Don't bite the newcomers! And don't just delete without trying to improve first 71.39.78.68 02:53, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Report me? Hmm, tough one, maybe you should go here, here or here. If those edits are not yours then maybe you should create an account so people know who they are dealing with, or maybe log in with your real account since you seem to know all the proper accusations to throw around. As for Limbaugh, if Limbaugh's article was a list of names he called people, it would be 50 gigabytes, he has a show article, if the Obama thing he said is notable, which it isn't, then add it there. More than likely someone else will just delete it later. --Dual Freq 03:06, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

USS Scorpion on Bermuda Triangle page

I noticed an edit on the Triangle talk page about the fact you mentioned the Scorpion as being not in the Triangle. You are correct in stating that; however I have included it based on the fact that many of the popular writers on the Triangle have themselves included the Scorpion with their works. I am engaged in a rebuilding of the Triangle page, and trying to ensure that the facts of the area are separated from the fiction; any assistance is very welcome. remove unverifiably google video?

How is the video unverifiable? You've seem to have heard of Cairo, go out there and you'll see the video is 100% Cairo. It shows the many different sights of Cairo, showing more than anything else on this website. 151.196.122.129 05:16, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Copyright Policy forbids linking to material known to be infringing copyrights. Wikipedia external link guidelines has standards for the inclusion of links, restrictions on linking and links normally to be avoided. Wikipedia:Verification requires that everything be verifiable. To that end WP:Reliable sources#Types of source material and WP:No original research has guidelines for use of primary sources and other sources. The policy regarding What Wikipedia is not notes that Wikipedia is not a repository of links, not a directory and is not a collection of indiscriminate information. --Dual Freq 05:22, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
There is no infrigement of copyright, there would be infrigement if the person is making money off of such a video, which they do not. The reliable source is the video itself, the words are nonsense. It's not trying to just mirror a link, it's a resource for those who want to learn about Cairo. This is still a subject of importance. The movie is perfectly reasonable to be there. There are rules all over the place being broken, and people do nothing about it. Yet a video that causes no harm or anything is kicked out. 151.196.122.129 05:27, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Everything has some kind of license or copyright. The video includes audio that is probably unlicensed, songs as well as text that is read. There is no clue as to who made the video, whether the poster made it, or if it was copied, borrowed, stolen, altered etc. If the video was on a news web site it could be trusted, this video has no verifiability like a news video would have. --Dual Freq 05:45, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

That's just unfair, shouldn't people be able to see how bad Cairo really is? 151.196.122.129 06:08, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Anybody can pick up a camera and find run down or abandoned buildings to film pretty much anywhere whether its Cairo, East St. Louis, Chicago, or Baltimore. --Dual Freq 06:16, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

But they don't include witty humor, also you don't really "find" run down or abandoned buildings in Cairo, since everything in Cairo is one or the other. 151.196.122.129 06:21, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
You could contact the creator of the video and ask them to release it under GFDL, or you could go out and create your own witty video (as long as it did not include any copyrighted material such as song tracts or commentary from other sources) and release that under GFDL. That is the nature of how Wikipedia deals with the reality of copyright law. -- Donald Albury 18:51, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Limbaugh BLP question

HI Dual Freq, wanted to get your input on the current BLP issue in Limbaugh and see whether you believe it violated BLP or should be part of the article. I believe that the edit in question is a BLP problem because by posting the quote from the newspaper into the section talking about his problem with drug addiction and the deal with the prosecutor which dropped all the charges, creates a false comparison and implies that Limbaugh committed a criminal act and got off easy compared to what he said should happen to "drug offenders".

The edit in question "Reporters for the Associated Press contrasted this deal to Limbaugh's previous statements regarding drug offenders' punishments. On October 5, 1995, Limbaugh said on his television program, "Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. ... And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."

Limbaugh was not found guilty of any crime or of illegally using drugs, but the statement suggests that the two situations "Limbaugh's situation" and "other drug offenders who violated the law" are equivalent, suggesting Limbaugh is a lawbreaker. Again, he was never found guilty, in fact no case ever even went to trial. All charges were dropped. Two years into the case, and six months before all charges were dropped, the state attorney said "I have no idea if Mr. Limbaugh has completed the elements of any offense yet.". Limbaugh certainly developed a problem with the drugs he was taking, a condition not that uncommon with people who are prescribed heavy pain killers for dealing with constant pain, but he was also not found to have obtained any drugs illegally. So, no valid cites that limbaugh made illegal use of drugs exist.

But this quote again, by saying "Reporters for the Associated Press contrasted this deal to Limbaugh's previous statements regarding drug offenders' punishments"...implies Limbaugh is a "Drug offender" and a lawbreaker and no where is it accurately sourced that he is.

It would be like, if we were writing an article on someone (who in the past said that "Horse thieves should be whipped" who was later himself investigated for horse thievery and had all charges dropped and never went to trial...and then we put into the article right after the part about dropping the charges "So and so contrasted this deal to Black Bart's previous statements about how horse thieves should be punished"...would we not be inferring that Black Bart should be considered the equivalent of a horse thief? Caper13 08:03, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

I understand what your getting at, and I don't think it belongs there either, but it looks like the best that can be done is to ensure that it is not weasel worded. He talks for 2 1/2 hours a day and if he runs a red light, I'm sure someone would add something he said 10 years ago about how people who run red lights should be shot. It's like the Chelsea Clinton bit a while back, it was cleaned up on Limbaugh's article, but someone just moved the POV to the Chelsea article. All I know is that having the article on my watchlist has slowed me down on other wikipedia editing. I get a lot more done for this project when I don't have to argue about the addition of random quotes, or what types of products he endorsed from a 15 year old article that only includes his name. --Dual Freq 15:12, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Illinois Counties

Hi, thanks for neatening up the Jo Daviess County, Illinois article, it looks much better. The age pyramid graphs are a useful visual aid. Thanks too for your work in other Illinois counties. Jaguara 21:21, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, I'm glad to help out. I found the age pyramids on Commons, unfortunately, there are only age pyramids for half of the Illinois counties. --Dual Freq 21:58, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Morton Downey

Dual, does the Colford source characterize Downey as a mentor of Limbaugh? Caper13 02:35, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

"In 1979 he abandoned radio all together and went to work for the Kansas City Royals as a public relations executive. Four years later, Limbaugh was back in radio first in Kansas City at KMBZ and later in Sacramento, Calif., where he replaced Morton Downey Jr. at KFBK and became a talk radio success." from Seattle Times, September 15, 1993, Wednesday, Final Edition. SECTION: SCENE; Pg. E3, EARLY FAILURES MOTIVATED LIMBAUGH TO TRY HARDER, PAUL D. COLFORD. Re:Image sources

Well, the 2nd source as I put it, is the one that I created for that website a LONG time ago. So I used that image and totally redid it in Paint (accidently saving them as jpeg in the process. The first page is the one that I used to make sure that the second one was correct. Otherwise, that map I made. I know there is a site Here, and someone told me that you can find township maps on the Illinois website, but I never could. I will have to keep looking to help.--Kranar drogin 01:24, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I actually have a blank copy of the county with townships, should I have uploaded that?--Kranar drogin 01:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Here it is IRAD Region Map. Sheesh it took me awhile to find it, but there are all sorts of great county info in here, plus maps of all the counties with the townships. I don't know if we can use these though, I think they are copyrighted.--Kranar drogin 01:35, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Yep, I created it 100%. Trust me, I looked very hard to find one to just download and fill in the red, but that would be TOO easy and luck did not give that to me. So for source I should put MS Paint, i will have to do that when I get back then and get rid of those links. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 01:42, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Alright, I got those tags all up on there. Did you want one of us to do the maps, and one of us to do plug in the township basic information? We can do it that way if you want. I can start making a map for Winnebago and just work from there? I don't know where to find the info on population and whatnot for a township. Auxillary ships

re: this edit, is a bit off. That one is for article pages, and there is a small set for category pages, which do some autocategorizing. By set, I mean they have a sister template with options such that will link a main article, supposing there is an Auxiliary_ships_of_the_United_States, or one in the planning. So aside from the also unsuccessful link Auxillary ship, is there anything like that in the works?

I see you also found Template:WikiPcat1, which alas, seems to have been used more than the experimental postings I'd applied here and there. Normally I'd say that was a good thing not bad, but it just so happens that the perameter order in that one is likely to be the one to change around over on the commons.

That's up in the air, for I need to survey numbers and do some peeking under the hood on a common page at the template guts--side by side so to speak--before jumping either way. NBD, but the two template sets need 'normalized' and streamlined, which would simplify tagging by the many. My colloquial friendly named 'WikiPcat' wasn't well received overall on the commons--too many languages! LOL. OTOH, retaining that name and simply doing an argument swap for the 'official named template' is probably the best fix. See Template:Commonscat1Ra (edit talk links history), for the likely 'common logic' and perameter order. That's what to use if there is a main article or umbrella main article that can be linked to on the cat pages. WikipediaA coming the other way. Both default to 'PAGENAME' when given no perameters, so they're perfect when a main article title matches a category title. Not bad when there's a mismatch, either by differences in the cat names, or the articles from the cat... it's assumed a perameter is an override.

I think you'll also be interested in this outcome or capability, as it were. Follow the links over to the commons side as well. <G> {{cat see also}} is available on both sister projects to really clarify sub-cats and uplinks as well. Should help keep things put in the right place, if used strategically. Cheers! // FrankB 20:22, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Dual, what do you think of this guy deleting blocks of text from the article. The items he is deleting are not controversial. Should I start reverting as vandalism, do you think? Caper13 01:51, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

They seem pretty persistent. I wouldn't revert it. I didn't want that stuff removed, I just wanted to get it cited. The best way would be to cite it, if possible, and not get into a revert war over it. --Dual Freq 01:58, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: Rodden, Illinois

Hey, thanks for adding your comments. Kranar drogin actually found several locations that are simliar to Rodden, Illinois. (See User talk:Chupper#Rodden Illinois) The only problem I have with listing Rodden in Elizabeth, Illinois or Elizabeth Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois is I'm not sure it's closest to Elizabeth. It seems as if it's surrounded by Elizabeth, Hanover, and Galena, and most accessible via Blackjack Road to Galena. I'd like to see it have it's own article because of this, to create a centralized place for it's history, ability to search & find it on Wikipedia (I know many people are curious about its origins), and especially to encourage edits by other users. What are your thoughts? Chupper 19:03, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I still don't like the idea of putting the information in Elizabeth Township. The fact that locations in this Rodden area are using Galena & Hanover zip codes & addresses makes me feel like throwing it in Elizabeth Township would only make it confusing. It seems like we have sources attributing to many towns. I still feel Rodden, Illinois should have its own article. It definitely appears as if its a ghost town. There are several of these ghost town articles on Wikipedia where the inhabitants of these towns often counts under 10 and in many times 0. Refer to - List of ghost towns in the United States. From this perspective I feel as if it should definitely merit its own article. Thoughts? Chupper 20:27, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I am moving on to Carroll County. I see you already have the template done, awesome! And then on to Whiteside County, and you have that done too! I am basically going to finish off the dark blue of that map I showed you awhile back here [5]. When I get into the Chicago suburbs and you haven't been able to do up those templates, I will figure out how to change them. 4 down, 14 to go, lol!--Kranar drogin 02:27, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I posted a question on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States about having the townships with the county name in it. Only one response so far, but that person said we should change them, and the Admin I talked to said he also suggests changing them. So, I think we should plan on getting ready to change them all. Is there an automated way of doing this, or am I going to be stuck doing it all by hand? The only exception is when you have more than one township in the state with the same name, then you add the county.--Kranar drogin 15:39, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure the legal description of property includes county name as does the US Census Bureau. I see no reason to change it, and unfortunately I know of no automated bot that can move the articles. The templates are easy to change, but the moving will be a pain since all redirects need to also be fixed. --Dual Freq 15:52, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
We will just stick with what we are doing then. Also, when you get a chance, could you set up Cook county? I think I am going to give a crack to that. Let me know when you get the template done.--Kranar drogin 15:55, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I have very little interest in Chicagoland, so this is the best I can do with the template Template:Cook County, Illinois. There are many border towns so I didn't know which to include, I suspect that might be a point of contention. This map and this page seem to differ in townships, the list doesn't have any of the townships covered by Chicago. I didn't know If those should be included. Thanks for your help. --Dual Freq 16:28, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

That is really strange as to why all those townships are not included. I will prolly add the maps into the Cook County maps section, and pose the question later on to people who live in that area. For now, I will just do the list. I think after this one, I am going to stay away from Chicagoland also, lol. Wish me luck!--Kranar drogin 17:32, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

When you get a chance, I need templates for DeKalb and Boone counties. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 22:47, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Done. --Dual Freq 03:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Also, if you could help me do the actual township articles on my list, that would be a huge help. These maps take up a bunch of my time, and I would like to focus on them, got a whole bunch of them done (including all of those in the Chicago area that have been done already). I can give you the infobox that I am working with along with the links if you want. If you don't want to, that is fine also. Let me know.--Kranar drogin 23:12, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
I did the townships for a few downstate counties a while back. Because there are so many to do and there is so little notable about most townships I pretty much lost interest in creating the stubs. Sorry. I'll try to get the templates done for the ones listed above. --Dual Freq 23:41, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Alright, I will continue to do what I am doing then. Have you seen my latest comment about the Points of Interest stuff on the talk page of Templates? Do you think we could do something like that up? Maybe make a page for Illinois Points of Interest or something along those lines? Just would like to hear your thoughts on it.--Kranar drogin 00:38, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't know, poi is such a vague category. I can see Major universities like SIUC listed on a template like Jackson County, Illinois since its so important to the area, but what else? Hospitals? State and federal Prisons? State parks? Rivers? Lakes? B & B's? Registered historical places? Bridges? Newspapers? Sports teams? Sports stadiums? Military bases? I don't know where to draw that line it seems like you include one poi you need to include the rest. It's just a template, we don't need to include every county related article in it, that's what the category is for. --Dual Freq 03:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I was trying to figure out a way to appease those from the Chicago area, but honestly, I think it is a moot point. If you really read into templates, they aren't suppose to list all that information. So, just keep doing what you are doing and we will be fine. Hey, instead of townships, do you feel up to improving city and village articles from the list I have up under my name? Again, it is up to you. I have been holding off and focusing on creating these stubs so if people feel so inclined, they can expand them (which I intend to do for Ogle County once I am done).--Kranar drogin 03:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, basically I was working on Savanna Army Depot trying to find an image and making a List of United States military bases in Illinois when I found a USGS page with a bunch of aerial photos of bridges and locks etc. Since I did the List of crossings of the Upper Mississippi River I decided to make a List of locks and dams of the Upper Mississippi River. Those articles are pretty rough so I'm trying to improve some of those. Once I get bored with that, I'll check back with you on the infoboxes. They certainly seem to improve the articles. but again because of the shear quantity it almost seems like an impossible mission. Maybe I can focus on a county so it will seem attainable. --Dual Freq 03:47, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Yep, that would be your best bet. Focus on one county (usually your home county first), and fill them in the best you can. Soon as it gets nice out again, I am hoping to go around with a photographer friend of mine and take pictures of the towns and cities in Ogle County to add to the site. Prolly take pictures of the schools, libraries, and museums for future articles. For now, I will just continue plugging away at these townships, and then backtrack to fix up some of the cities.--Kranar drogin 22:54, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Lock and Dam No. 23

I've removed the db tag from the above article because it didn't meet the criteria for speedy deletion. "Patent nonsense" refers to real nonsense, like random characters or senseless rambling. If you feel the article is untrue, that's something for WP:AFD.

On another note, I'm also a little confused: how can there be a Lock and Dam No. 22 and a Lock and Dam No. 24 without a Lock and Dam No. 23? Kafziel Talk 16:34, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about the nonsense tag, I didn't know what to put it under it seemed like nonsense since it doesn't exist. AfD seems a bit over kill, but if that's what it takes I guess I can put it up. Upper Mississippi River and the USACE web pages indicate that there is no Lock and Dam Number 23.[6] [7] [8] As to why there is no number 23, I can't answer that. There is a 5 and a 5A so maybe that messed with the numbering somehow. I've been trying to find a historical dam, but the only hit I can get for a historical Lock and Dam 23 is on on the Ohio River. This one looks like it was a bulk created stub that just overlooked the fact that there is no number 23. --Dual Freq 16:53, 14 February 2007 (UTC) (I just saw the tag on your talk page, sorry about adding it there)
Ha ha, that's okay. I replied on my talk page. Kafziel Talk 17:09, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Can you offer guidance on a commercial link issue?

You may know I've been working on / watching the Automatic Identification System article, trying to clean it and improve it for FA-status. A constant problem has been external links that point to commercial AIS-tracking websites. Recently, a new user has been persistent in adding, and restoring after its removal, a link to a commercial site. I think I'm at the fifth or sixth revert in the last week.

You've got a lot of experience here on Wiki, and I've often used your actions as guidance. Could you take a look at what I've done and offer any observations? Am I acting inappropriately? Am I wrong that this site, even though it is commercial based and requires registration, is acceptable because it offers some level of service for free?

I really appreciate any thoughts you have! I'll watch here, so don't worry about posting answers on my talk
- Davandron | Talk 19:23, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not an admin, but I'd say the 3RR report is a good start. It's not exactly vandalism, but I see no need for the link and its definitely a conflict of interest. The trial version appears to be a lead in to the pay service and the user admits they are a party to the venture saying: "we provide at our own cost." WP:SOAP and WP:EL#Advertising_and_conflicts_of_interest seem to support removal of the link as spam, too. I would remove it as well and probably would have used {{Welcomespam}} and a {{spam}} warnings, though warning IP addresses is pretty much a waste of time. Sometimes you have to wait them out and remove it after they lose interest. A compromise might be to link to a Wikipedia article about the company providing the service in the see also section. That would weed out all but the most notable companies since non-notable companies are unlikely to have an article and eligible for deletion if they are only for propaganda. --Dual Freq 20:03, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Dual Freq. I know you're not an admin; if I recall correctly you have a box saying you dont want to be one too, but I had seen you face a number of issues and respected how you handled each of them. I feel guidance on the way a non-admin handles issues is of more use to another non-admin (an admin might have tried to solve my problem instead of showing me how to solve it). Thanks again! - Davandron | Talk 22:01, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

DeKalb, Illinois

If you get a chance, can you goto the Talk:DeKalb, Illinois page and explain why the Star Worlds Arcade can't be included also? Unless you agree, and explain that reasoning. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 19:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not the yellow pages and Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. An arcade doesn't strike me as worth mentioning unless its registered historical or something. Those sections kind of attract that sort of thing just like local bands in notable persons sections. Sometimes its best to let it go for a couple hours or days and remove it after they've lost interest, otherwise it turns into an edit war. Since its not really vandalism it would be hard to block somebody for it, though I suppose 3RR could come into play if it keeps up. --Dual Freq 21:31, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Revert U.S. County template

Hello and thank you for using Wikipedia. I see that you reverted the Infobox U.S. County template, but that was not necessary. A small fix was in order, and it has been made. Please request a fix to a template before deciding to revert all the changes. Thank you /Timneu22 13:49, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

That revert was necessary. You made so many changes, it was more important to return it to a working version than to figure out what you had broken. Next time you mess with a template that transcludes in over 1800 articles you should be more careful. Apparently someone still thinks its broken, perhaps you should try again. Thank you. --Dual Freq 15:04, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
It has been fixed completely now, and it is far better than what was there before I started. Note that the fix for the Illinois articles was a one-line change (remove wiki links); I don't consider this "trashing" an article. /Timneu22 22:09, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

All I'm saying is be more careful when you mess with a widely used template. Is there a reason why "Largest City" is no longer hidden when not used? I didn't change "one-line" because I didn't want to screw it up further so the only prudent solution was to revert to a safe version. Nothing like 1800 articles with extra wiki link trash showing up in the template. --Dual Freq 22:27, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok, fair enough. I found the AutoLink template which will correct any "double links" like I had created before. I didn't realize "largest city" didn't show when not used before. I'll edit that. Thanks. /Timneu22 23:33, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Illinois and other states My reply from Template:Infobox U.S. County: I have added all the skinny states to the switch statement so the sizing issues have gone away. It is better this way, I think, than letting users dictate the size (and screwing it up)! /Timneu22 23:47, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
