Die Gattung wurde im Jahre 1817 von dem französischen Botaniker Prof. Louis Claude Marie Richard (1754-1821) nach der Typusart Platanthera bifolia gültig beschrieben. Die große Breite der Anthere bei dieser Art gab der Gattung ihren Namen. (griechisch πλατύς platys = breit, platt und ανθέρα anthera = Staubbeutel).
