[edit] Career background
She achieved international renown as an Internet performer. Born in the Netherlands, she grew up with the intent of becoming a social worker. In 2006, using her sister’s webcam she began to post videos of herself singing interpretations of pop songs and later her own compositions. Described as having "an amazing, soulful voice,"[1] she quickly became a YouTube sensation.
By early 2007, there were at least two fansites on the Web (Dutch and English), and several viewers had posted remixes of Denter’s songs on YouTube.
On February 7, 2007 Denters announced that she would be traveling the next day to the United States for a ten-day recording session, on the strength of her Internet appearances. She did not announce the names of her sponsors.
By February 19, she posted another video announcing that she has arrived back from the United States and is going to Sweden to write and record songs.[2]
On February 25, 2007 Reuters/Billboard distributed an article about Ms. Denters and her trip to the USA. The article was published in the March 3, 2007 issue of BillBoard Magazine. Esmee's picture was shown on the front cover as the inset feature article.[3]
By March 6, she went again to the United States, for writing songs and maybe signing a record deal. She is reported to have signed a deal with songwriter Billy Mann and to have been in the studio with Kelly Rowland.[4]
