European Commissioner for Energy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Commissioner for Energy is one of the members of the European Commission. As of 2007, the current holder of the post is Andris Piebalgs (ALDE).
The Commissioner holds responsibility for the European Union's energy policy, and for nuclear safety and security. Together with the Commissioner for Transport, the Commissioner for Energy works on developing policy with the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport.
Recently the European Union has been active in trying to reduce its energy dependence upon countries such as Russia and cutting its carbon emissions to meet the Kyoto Protocol which the EU itself has signed.
