MTV Base is a digital television channel in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Africa. The channels play hip hop music and R&B.

The UK channel launched on July 1, 1999. The channel plays music from the urban genres, as well as corresponding programming (such as Pimp My Ride) to those genres of music. The channel is also available in Ireland and some other countries (Astra 1G -satellite, CanalDigitaal Netherlands( SECA2 ),CanalsatFrance ( Viaccess 2.4 ), France Telecom ( Viaccess 2.4 ), Noos Numerique ( Viaccess 2.4 ), UPC direct ( Cryptoworks ) and has recently been removed from Easy.Tv ( Cryptoworks ), [2]
[edit] MTV Base in Africa
In 2004, MTV's parent company Viacom bought Germany's largest provider for music television, Viva Media AG, thereby creating the largest company for music on the European mainland. In February 2005, MTV began airing MTV Base in Africa [3], thereby reaching the world's last major populated area previously not served by MTV.
MTV Base Africa is available to around 1.3 million homes across 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa via satellite, but also plans to broadcast on free-to-air networks. The channel launched February 22, 2005.
