Fluoxetine hydrochloride is an antidepressant drug used medically in the treatment of depression, body dysmorphic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, hypochondriasis and panic disorder. Fluoxetine is an atypical SSRI, in that it has been found to also increase extracellular levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the prefrontal cortex, in addition to those of serotonin. As such, this particular SSRI may be more effective at treating depression associated with a lack of motivation or energy.[1]
Fluoxetine was derived from the antihistamine diphenhydramine, which had been found to inhibit reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin.[2]
