Wikipedia

"Cover" (suom. lainakappale, myös koveri tai kover-biisi) tarkoittaa populaarimusiikissa kappaletta, jonka joku toinen yhtye tai artisti on jo aikaisemmin levyttänyt. Kaikki levytettävät kappaleet ovat siis joko covereita tai sitten ennen levyttämättömiä kappaleita.

Uusien kappaleiden levytyksiä - varsinkin yhtyeen tai artistin itse säveltämiä - arvostetaan yleensä enemmän kuin cover-levytysten tekemistä. Toisaalta, jos joku onnistuu tekemään erittäin hyvän cover-version, saa hän arvostusta osakseen, koska hyvän cover-version tekemistä pidetään hankalana.

On lukuisia yhtyeitä, jotka esiintyvät pelkästään covereiden varassa. Usein yhtyeet aloittavat ensin cover-materiaalin turvin ja siirtyvät myöhemmin tekemään omaa musiikkia, mutta monet yhtyeet eivät näe tarpeelliseksi ruveta koskaan tekemään omaa materiaalia. Joillekin cover-esityksillä mainetta hankkineille yhtyeille voi kasaantua paineita tehdä myös omaa materiaalia ja tästä voi tulla yhtyeelle näytön paikka.

Cover-version voi tietysti tehdä useammasta eri lähestymistavasta. Joskus pyritään tekemään mahdollisimman pitkälle alkuperäiseltä kuulostava versio. Joskus taas alkuperäinen kappale sovitetaan aivan kokonaan uudelleen. Tällöin ideana saattaa olla tutun melodian vieminen aivan uuteen ääniympäristöön. Cover-versio voi olla myös sävyltään alkuperäistä humoristisempi tulkinta tai jopa parodia alkuperäisestä esityksestä.

Blues- ja jazz-musiikissa soitetaan vielä populaarimusiikkia enemmän muiden jo aiemmin esittämiä sävellyksiä. Näiden tyylien useimmin soitetuista kappaleista käytetään nimeä "standardi". Esimerkkinä tunnetusta blues-standardista käy Eddie Boydin sävellys "Five Long Years" ja jazz-standardina pidetään taas esimerkiksi Dizzy Gillespien kappaletta "A Night in Tunisia".

Guinnessin ennätyskirjan mukaan The Beatlesin "Yesterdaysta" (Lennon/McCartney) on tehty kaikista kappaleista eniten cover-levytyksiä.
