Interstate 890 (abbreviated I-890) is a 9.45 mile (15.21 km) long interstate highway and spur route of Interstate 90 (I-90) in and near Schenectady, New York, USA originally built to accommodate traffic from General Electric and American Locomotive Company when both companies were pivotal to the local economy. Since their demise in the area I-890 has become a connection to the downtown Schenectady area. It runs southeast-northwest from an intersection with Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway) just south of Schenectady in northern Albany County to another junction with Interstate 90, northwest of the city. As I-90 does not pass through the city of Schenectady, Interstate 890 serves as the most direct route between I-90 and Schenectady. It continues west as New York State Route 890.
Interstate 890 is also one of two[citation needed] interstates in New York to have the exits numbered by milepost instead of sequentially. While distance based exit numbering is common in the majority of the United States, New York favors sequentially numbered exits instead. The numbering on I-890 was an experiment from the early 1970s. Because of the spacing of the exits along I-890, the exit numbers are seemingly sequential. The only evidence of distance based numbering is the presence of "Exit 4C".
NY 7 has a wrong-way concurrency with I-890 between exits 7 and 9A.
The route is designated as the Schenectady County Veterans Memorial Highway.
