Power ballad

Il termine Power Ballad sta a indicare un brano, solitamente lento e melodico, che arriva ad esplorare temi sentimentali come la nostalgia e la gelosia, la rottura, l'abbandono o semplicemente una dichiarazione d'amore. Spesso contratta in ballad (in italiano ballata), il termine richiama l'omonimo componimento poetico, che cantava in versi temi di medesima specie.
Le power ballad posso essere riconosciute in diversi generi rock; come pop rock, hard rock, glam rock, heavy metal, glam metal, arena rock, AOR e in alcuni casi anche punk rock.
In origine denominato ballad, il termine nasce verso la fine degli anni '30 in America da artisti di colore; forse il brano più celebre risale a Oaghy Carmichael che compose la famosa ballad Georgia on my mind, brano rivisitato da molti artisti, fra i più noti Ray Charles e Bing Crosby che con la sua versione, ispira il celebre Ghigo Agosti a promuovere il genere in Italia con una incisione del 1954 e più tardi nel 1963 con il primo autentico ballad italiano solo con me.
Il termine riemerge verso la fine degli anni '60, per poi evolversi negli anni '70 e '80 prendendo così la definitiva denominazione di power ballad.
Tra i primi esempi di power ballad c'è Goodbye to Love dei The Carpenters (1972): l'eredità fu raccolta dai The Raspberries e gruppi AOR come Styx, Boston, REO Speedwagon e Journey. La fortuna delle power ballad ebbe la sua consacrazione con All by Myself, portata al successo nel 1976 da Eric Carmen. È negli anni ottanta che il genere conobbe però l'apice della popolarità: grazie alle power ballad, gruppi hard & heavy/Glam metal come gli Scorpions (con Still Loving You) e i Night Ranger (con Sister Christian) raggiunsero le vette delle classifiche internazionali. Paradigmatiche dello stesso decennio anche Time after Time di Cyndi Lauper e Total Eclypse of the Heart di Bonnie Tyler. In Italia il genere fu recepito sin dagli anni settanta (nella cosiddetta "stagione dei cantautori") e valorizzato nel corso degli anni ottanta, di cui l'esempio forse più noto è La donna cannone di Francesco De Gregori. Ancor'oggi il genere identifica quelle canzoni che toccano temi simili e fanno uso di una composizione melodica simile (si pensi a My Immortal degli Evanescence).
Le power ballad spesso attaccano con una strofa lenta e ritmata, accompagnata da tastiere e chitarre acustiche. Generalmente al ritornello o coro sono introdotti nuovi strumenti, come le percussioni e la chitarra elettrica, per dare enfasi al testo e alla carica sentimentale.
