[edit] Summary
This book tells the tale of Nejaa Halcyon, Anakin Skywalker and Grudo trying to rescue an important Republic communications hub from the Separatist Forces, located on the barren planet of Praesitlyn. Halcyon is sent as a trial for him to regain the Jedi Council's trust, and he chose Anakin as his second in command on this mission.
Before they reached Praesitlyn, Halcyon confessed to Anakin that he had violated the Jedi code, and had had a wife and a son. In turn, Anakin told Halcyon all about his marriage to Padmé Amidala. The two promised each other not to mention their violations to anyone.
Halcyon and Anakin led the Republic forces and the Praesitlyn Defense Force against the over one million battle droids and large space fleet of Admiral Pors Tonith. First friendly troops to land on the planet was the former Republic officer now a pirate Captain Slayke and his troops the Sons and Daughters of Freedom. An estimated 50,000 troops, a unknown number of fighters, artillery, and a fleet was what Slayke had and fought with. Halcycon and Anakin arrived with all of the available troops- 20,000 clone troopers about 4 commando teams, many fighters, and a unknown amount of transport and one ARC. Slayke was down to about 2,000 troops and was about to lose until the support troops arrived. Then it was settled by Anakin to separate their troops into three commands. They sent three recon teams to find a weakness in the droids defense after they received a holovid from Chancellor Palpatine with the leader of the hostages in the ICC. Two commando teams were sent out, but they were all killed before they could report back with vital information by friendly fire.
The next day Anakin led his troops to attack the right flank, while the remaining commandos went on ahead to make a lot of damage. Anakin lost multiple troops, damaged transports, and all the commandos are killed. Tonith's men got the command codes and voice patterns for all of the superior officers in the Republic force, and ordered the artillery to attack at the right flank just after Anakin and his troops finally got there. Anakin suggested he and a small attack group and two troop transports circle around twice very close to the ground to confuse the enemy. Then they would get into the ICC, rescue the hostages, and destroy the place. The plan succeeded and Anakin killed so many droids that the troopers had a hard time finding targets.
After a long series of events during the battle, Anakin led a clone trooper legion to rescue the Republic Communications officer, Reija Momen, and her colleagues, who had been captured by a Separatist leader, Pors Tonith. However, Reija Momen was killed in front of Anakin; angered, he began to use the dark side. He stormed into the Separatist's command center. He then captured Tonith and the engineers working there, and almost killed them. He relented only when he heard a voice he thought was Qui-Gon Jinn's, which told him to stop.
Soon, Anakin and Halcyon went in their starfighters to destroy the Separatist's relief fleet. Anakin decided to sacrifice himself, and to Halcyon's horror, the Separatist's relief fleet exploded in a brilliant flash, (seemingly) along with Anakin. Later, when Halcyon and the others involved in the campaign were celebrating their victory and mourning Anakin, who all thought dead, Anakin returned, much to everyone's surprise. Anakin later explained that he had installed a hyperdrive engine in his starfighter's engine, which enabled him to escape from the blast.
Later, when Anakin returned to Coruscant, the Jedi Council, impressed with his performance, finally agreed to invest him for Knighthood. He also performs a marriage ceremony.
