Kankuro (カンクロウ Kankurō?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto.
"Kankuro" is the name of a famous ninja, and he often was pictured as a ninja with a crow (Karasu) as his pet. "Kankuro" is also the name of many famous Kabuki actors which shows in his face paint and quirky style of speech in the original Japanese versions.

Kankuro is the second oldest child of the Fourth Kazekage, making him the older brother of Gaara and the younger brother of Temari. Kankuro seems to dislike children, as demonstrated by his remarks when in the presence of someone younger than him. Kankuro's favorite food is hamburgers, with his least favorite being spinach.
Kankuro is a talented puppeteer with an ever-growing arsenal of puppets. In his first appearance, Kankuro only has one puppet, Karasu (烏? "Crow"), which makes an excessive creaking noise whenever it moves. Kankuro typically keeps Karasu wrapped in bandages on his back, and he is able to switch places with it at will. Because of Kankuro's enjoyment in installing mechanisms into his puppets, Karasu is very offensive, having numerous concealed weapons and being able to detach any of its limbs for separate attacks. As the series progresses, Kankuro's arsenal grows to include Kuroari (黒蟻? "Black Ant"), a puppet that can trap and torture enemies, and Sanshouo (山椒魚 Sanshōuo?, "Salamander"), a puppet destroyed before it can be seen in action (the video games depict it as being a puppet shield, used to protect Kankuro from things such as explosions). Similarly, and perhaps as a result of his growing ability, Kankuro's face paint changes with each of his appearances.

[edit] Chunin Exam arc
Prior to the start of the Chunin Exams, Kankuro is run into by Konohamaru, who he is quick to start picking on. When Gaara appears and threatens to kill Kankuro, the latter leaves Konohamaru alone, not wanting to invoke his brother's wrath. During the written portion of the exams, Kankuro disguises Karasu as an extra proctor and goes to the bathroom with Karasu accompanying him. While in the bathroom Kankuro is given the answers by Karasu. When Kankuro recieves all the answers from Karasu, he slips them to Temari.
During the preliminaries of the Chunin Exam, Kankuro is matched against Misumi Tsurugi. Kankuro acts overconfident at first, allowing Misumi to catch him in a stranglehold and break his neck. Although the attack seems to have killed Kankuro, it is revealed that Kankuro switched places with Karasu, and Karasu is able to easily grab hold of Misumi. Although Misumi tries to forfeit the match, Kankuro uses Karasu to crush Misumi's body, keeping him alive but putting him in excruciating pain.
In the final round of the Chunin Exam, Kankuro is scheduled to fight Shino Aburame. When it comes time for the match to begin, however, Kankuro forfeits, not wanting to reveal Karasu's new abilities before the invasion of Konoha can begin. When the invasion finally starts, Kankuro's assignment meets a last minute change and he is forced to escort an injured Gaara out of the country. When Sasuke Uchiha starts to pursue them, however, Kankuro volunteers to stay behind and keep Sasuke at bay. Before they can start fighting, Shino arrives, wanting to have the battle he was denied during the exams.
As Sasuke goes off to continue his pursuit of Gaara, Kankuro attacks Shino with Karasu, though Shino's use of bugs allows him to perform a number of otherwise impossible dodges. With each of his dodges, Shino instructs his bugs to feed on the strings of chakra that Kankuro uses to control Karasu, forcing the latter to frequently release and regain control of his puppet. As the battle progresses, Shino slowly directs his bugs to Kankuro's stationary position, attacking Kankuro once they reach their destination. As Kankuro's chakra is consumed, leaving him paralyzed, Shino collapses, one of Karasu's poisonous attacks starting to effect him. Later, Kankuro is retrieved by Temari, and he flees with her and Gaara soon after.

At the request of the Fifth Hokage, Kankuro and his siblings come to the aid of those sent out to retrieve Sasuke. Kankuro saves Kiba Inuzuka from being killed by Sakon and Ukon, both of whom are quick to ridicule Karasu. Although Kiba asks Kankuro to retreat, Kankuro refuses, not willing to allow the insults to his puppets go unpunished. By using Karasu and his newly acquired Kuroari in unison, Kankuro is able to contain and finish the brothers with his Black Secret Technique Machine One Shot.

In an appearance sometime before the timeskip, Kankuro helps defend Sunagakure from an onslaught of mysterious knights, utilizing Kuroari to battle the seemingly unbeatable foes. Later, in one of the wrecks of the invading ships, he fights one of Haido's henchmen, Kamina. Using Karasu to trick her into thinking it's him, he nearly kills her before she transforms into a bat-like form to escape. Kankuro attempts to cling onto her leg, but instead he ends up hanging on a ledge while Naruto mistakenly grabs onto Kankuro, causing both to fall off the ship. He eventually kills her using the Black Secret Technique Machine Two Shot, after Shikamaru uses exploding tags to maneuver her into Kuroari.

Over the timeskip, Kankuro has become a Jonin-level ninja and has added a third puppet, Sanshouo, to his arsenal, the abilities of which are unknown. He also has more purple paint lines on his face. He also now keeps his puppets contained in summoning scrolls on his back. Kankuro has also developed a closer relationship with Gaara, who no longer views Kankuro as an annoying family member. Gaara also seems to have begun to confide in Kankuro, sharing his dreams of wanting to risk his life to protect Sunagakure with Kankuro. As such, Kankuro has become very protective of Gaara, willing to challenge anyone who puts Gaara down in his presence.
[edit] Rescue Gaara arc
When Gaara is defeated and captured by Deidara and Sasori, two members of Akatsuki, Kankuro follows in hot pursuit, determined to stop them from taking his brother. To defeat the Akatsuki pair, Kankuro summons his three puppets from their carrying scrolls, and prepares to defeat the member that stays behind. The Akatsuki member, revealed to be Sasori, quickly defeats Kankuro and destroys his puppets as he was the original creator of the puppets, and as such knows their weaknesses and tactics. After poisoning Kankuro, Sasori leaves, giving Kankuro three days before the poison kills him.
Soon after, Team 7 arrives at Sunagakure to help in rescuing Gaara, and while they are there Sakura Haruno cures Kankuro and creates an antidote from the poison still in his system. Once well enough to walk around, Kankuro sets out with Temari to catch up with Team 7. When Gaara is found and revived, Kankuro joins Temari in thanking Team 7 for saving their brother.
