Tenten (テンテン?) (romanized as Ten Ten in the English anime) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto. In some foreign subtitles, Tenten has been referred to as Ama, from the term "Ama kudari", which means "descending from heaven". This has caused some fans to mistakenly conclude that "Ama" is her last name.
The name "Tenten" means here and there. Repeating the same syllable twice is a popular naming scheme for pandas; her odango hairstyle also resembles panda ears. "Tenten" can also refer to the small double marks that appear on Japanese hiragana and katakana to change the pronunciation of certain characters (for example, "ta" [た] becomes "da" [だ] with the addition of "tenten"). Tenten can also mean heavenly, which could refer to her usage of jutsu that involve jumping into the air.
In an interview in the Second Official Databook, Masashi Kishimoto states that, out of the four central Konoha kunoichi, Tenten would be his type "because [he likes] her design".

[edit] Background
Tenten is a rarely seen member of Might Guy's Team Guy, consisting of herself, Neji Hyuga, and Rock Lee. Tenten strongly believes that female ninja can be as skilled as male ninja, and her goal in life is to someday be as great as Tsunade. Tenten's favorite foods are sesame dumplings and Chinese food, with her least favorite being umeboshi. Her favorite hobby is astrology.
Tenten seems to specialize in weaponry, and uses scrolls to summon weapons for battle. Her accuracy is apparently impeccable, as she can hit a bullseye 100 out of 100 times. Tenten couples these talents by summoning a myriad of weapons in battle and throwing them at opponents in quick succession. Tenten frequently uses these abilities to help Neji train with his Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin, and she often joins Neji in wondering how Guy and Lee can train the way they do.
[edit] Part I
[edit] Chunin Exam arc
During the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exam, Tenten is pitted against Temari. Tenten begins the match by throwing wave after wave of weapons at Temari, though Temari easily blows them away with her fan. After Tenten tries to use her Twin Rising Dragons, Temari uses her fan to trap Tenten in a cyclone and propel her into the air. As the cyclone disperses and Tenten falls to the ground, Temari makes it a point to have Tenten land on her fan, knocking Tenten unconscious. With Tenten out of commission Temari throws her into her own pile of weapons, but Lee catches her before she can be injured. In the manga, almost none of this fight is shown, only the beginning and the end.
[edit] Anime filler arcs
During the Konoha 11 arc, Tenten is shown to be a very keen observer, picking up on facts that others overlook. In the last of the filler arcs, Tenten is the only one of the Konoha Genin to be left out of the mission, and Tenten scolds Lee because of it. Lee explains that Tenten was away on another mission and so couldn't have come, though Tenten attacks him anyway.
[edit] Part II
Over the timeskip, Tenten has become a Chunin. Her arsenal of weaponry also seems to have expanded, as she now keeps her weapons in one large scroll instead of two smaller ones.
[edit] Rescue Gaara arc
Team Guy is sent to assist Team 7 in rescuing Gaara. Along the way, the group encounters Akatsuki member Kisame Hoshigaki. Tenten tries to attack Kisame with a spiked bomb, but he is able to avoid the explosion. After Kisame is defeated and Team Guy reaches the Akatsuki hideout, the team disperses to remove a number of seals in the surrounding area that are making entrance to the lair impossible. Although they succeed, they are each forced to fight exact copies of themselves, though each defeats their lookalike in time. After Gaara is rescued, Team Guy returns to Konoha with Team 7.
