Kurenai Yuhi (夕日紅 Yūhi Kurenai?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto.
The name "Yuhi" means "evening sun" and "Kurenai" means "crimson". Kurenai's red lipstick is kind of a pun on her own name. The kanji for "Kurenai" can also be read as "beni" which is a word used for red makeup used traditionally in Japan to color the lips red.

Background
Kurenai Yuhi is the genjutsu-specializing leader of Team 8, consisting of Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame, and Hinata Hyuga. Little is known about Kurenai other than that she graduated from the Academy at the age of 9, became a Chunin at the age of 13, and that she only recently became a Jonin. She likes shōchū, vodka, salted octopus, and drinking a glass of wine at night, and she dislikes cake. Kurenai is unyielding, honest, and simple, and she describes herself as a "sexy big sister type".
Kurenai has a close bond with all of her students, though she seems to be especially close with Hinata. Kurenai knows that Hinata's father views Hinata as worthless, and as such takes on the role of a parent for Hinata. Kurenai also seems to be aware of Hinata's feelings for Naruto Uzumaki, and does her best to try to overcome Naruto's obliviousness to these feelings by encouraging him to help Hinata when he can.
It has been heavily hinted that Kurenai was romantically involved with Asuma Sarutobi. The two were seen together almost constantly when not on duty, and were usually paired together when they were on duty. When Kakashi Hatake finds the two together at a dumpling shop, Kakashi asks if they are on a date, to which Kurenai responds by blushing. In a flashback, Asuma is shown buying flowers for a person he refuses to name, though Ino Yamanaka asks that he say hello to Kurenai for her anyway. During Asuma's battle with Akatsuki, various shots of Kurenai are shown, indicating that she is concerned about him. Soon after, while Kurenai is watering flowers, a flower falls off of its stalk, leading Kurenai to believe that something has happened to Asuma. When Kurenai is told of Asuma's death, she falls to her knees in remorse, and later lays flowers on Asuma's grave during his funeral. The truth of their relationship is revealed in Part II, when it is revealed that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma's child.
Part I
Chunin Exam arc
After Naruto's match during the preliminaries of the Chunin Exam, Hinata offers Naruto some medicine to help heal his wounds. Although Naruto is reluctant, Kurenai tells him to accept it and thank Hinata. During Hinata's battle with Neji Hyuga, Kurenai notes the change in Hinata, the latter no longer running away from a confrontation. Kurenai realizes that Hinata's efforts are a result of her desire to prove herself to her father, and Kurenai is glad that Hinata is no longer submitting to failure. When Neji tries to kill Hinata, Kurenai joins some of the other observing Jonin in saving her.
Return of Itachi arc
During her brief battle with Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, Kurenai tries to trap Itachi with her Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death. Itachi, however, is able to turn the tables on Kurenai and trap her in her own genjutsu, though he hesitates in killing her long enough for her to escape. Itachi is able to follow her, though Kakashi Hatake is able to arrive and save her before she can be attacked.
Anime filler arcs
Kurenai makes relatively few appearances during the filler arcs until the Kurama Clan arc, where it is revealed that Kurenai once taught a student named Yakumo Kurama. Yakumo's kekkei genkai, which created genjutsu so powerful it could kill others, forced Kurenai to seal away Yakumo's ability due to it being too dangerous, and because of this Yakumo was no longer able to become a ninja. When the seal is undone years later, Yakumo's abilities begin to threaten Konoha, and Kurenai separates herself from Team 8 so that she can deal with Yakumo.
On Kurenai's way to meet Yakumo, she is attacked by a group of genjutsu using ninja, though she is able to defeat wave after wave of their attacks due to being more skilled with genjutsu. Kurenai is eventually defeated by the ninja's boss and is trapped in an illusionary world by Yakumo. While Kurenai is in the world, she learns of a monster within Yakumo's subconscious that killed Yakumo's parents. With Yakumo's help, Kurenai is able to defeat the monster and free Yakumo from its influence. Once freed from Yakumo's world, Kurenai returns to her position as leader of Team 8.
Part II
Kurenai makes numerous appearances in Part II, though most amount to her worrying for Asuma's safety. During the course of Asuma's battle with Akatsuki, she is often shown wondering about his progress and eventual fate. Upon learning of Asuma's death, Kurenai breaks down in tears, later being seen laying flowers on his grave during his funeral. After Shikamaru Nara avenges Asuma, he visits Asuma's grave to find Kurenai already there. Shikamaru explains what he learned from Asuma, and it is revealed that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma's child, which Shikamaru promises to protect.
