Zabuza Momochi (桃地再不斬 Momochi Zabuza?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto.
Zabuza, when translated figuratively from the Kanji in his name means "never cuts twice", a fitting name given that he kills most of his opponents in a single sword strike.

Zabuza Momochi was born in Kirigakure and was known from a young age as the "Demon of the Hidden Mist" (霧隠れの鬼人 Kirigakure no Kijin?). This title is a result of his singlehanded slaying of all the graduating Academy students in the village one year, bringing an end to Kirigakure's custom of pitting students against their classmates in battles to the death. Zabuza would go on to become one of the Seven Shinobi Swordsmen of the Mist (霧の忍刀七人衆 Kiri no Shinobigatana Nananin Shu?) where he acquired his zanbatō, which he enjoys sharpening in his spare time. While one of the Seven Shinobi, Zabuza apparently trained Suigetsu for a time, the latter someday wanting to become one of the Seven Shinobi himself. Zabuza also became a member of Kirigakure's ANBU division, honing his stealth skills to a great degree.
At some point in time, Zabuza found a young boy named Haku wandering the countryside, and offered to take Haku in as his tool. Haku accepted and became loyal to Zabuza, learning from Zabuza and protecting him whenever necessary. Zabuza eventually attempted a coup d'état on the Land of Water by trying to kill the Mizukage, but his coup failed and he and his subordinates were forced to flee the country. Kirigakure sent out ANBU personnel to kill Zabuza, but Zabuza always managed to stay one step ahead of them. In the hopes of gaining funds so that he could attempt a second coup, Zabuza became a hired assassin, killing anyone if the price was right.
Being from Kirigakure, Zabuza excelled in water-oriented jutsu, which he often used to make his assassinations easier. By using the Hiding Mist Technique, Zabuza could blind his target and use his ANBU training to find them in the thick mist based only on the sounds they would make. This talent with assassinations appears to be well-known, as even the ninja of Konohagakure were familiar with Zabuza's history.
Zabuza does not seem to have any eyebrows, a trait that is referenced to on more than one occasion by others. While this holds true in the manga, the anime mistakenly shows him with eyebrows in some scenes.

Zabuza is hired by Gato to kill the bridge builder Tazuna, and he sends two of his henchmen to do the job. When the two are defeated by Tazuna's bodyguards, Zabuza elects to kill Tazuna himself. Upon tracking down his target, Zabuza learns that Tazuna is being protected by Kakashi Hatake and his students. Wanting to test his ability, Zabuza challenges Kakashi to a battle, and Kakashi complies by revealing his Sharingan.
Soon after the battle begins, Zabuza manages to catch Kakashi off guard and traps him with his Water Prison Technique. Needing to stay with Kakashi to keep him imprisoned, Zabuza creates a water clone to kill Tazuna and the rest of Kakashi's team, believing it to be a simple matter. Naruto Uzumaki, however, manages to sneak up on Zabuza disguised as a fuma shuriken, forcing Zabuza to release Kakashi. Freed, Kakashi and Zabuza resume their battle, though Kakashi's Sharingan quickly gives him the upperhand. Copying Zabuza's Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique before he can use it, Kakashi manages to defeat Zabuza.
Before Zabuza can be killed by Kakashi, Haku appears disguised as a hunter-nin and throws two needles into Zabuza's neck, apparently killing Zabuza. Taking Zabuza's body away under the guise of needing to destroy it, Haku revives Zabuza, the needles having been used to paralyze him. Although Zabuza's life has been saved, he needs a week to recover, and he plans to kill Tazuna and Kakashi then.
A week later, Zabuza and Haku appear before Team 7 for a rematch. As Haku deals with Kakashi's students, Zabuza deals with Kakashi. Having been told how the Sharingan works by Haku, Zabuza devises a counter to it, blanketing the area in a thick mist to avoid falling prey to the Sharingan's influence. In doing so, Zabuza is able to slash Kakashi with his sword and thus greatly damaging his opponent. Kakashi, however, allowed himself to be attacked by Zabuza, upon which Kakashi summons his Ninken, which use their advanced sense of smell to sniff out the blood that is now on Zabuza's sword to track and pin Zabuza down. With Zabuza unable to fight back, Kakashi prepares to kill Zabuza with his Lightning Blade, and charges at Zabuza.
Before the Lightning Blade can meet its mark, Haku appears before Zabuza as a human shield and takes the full force of the attack, fulfilling his promise of being a tool for his master. Freed as a result of Haku's intervention and not willing to allow the opening Haku has created go to waste, Zabuza tries to slash through Haku's body to kill Kakashi, though Kakashi is able to avoid it. In his surprise that Kakashi could dodge it, Zabuza gives Kakashi the opportunity to stab him in both of his arms, making them useless. With that, Gato arrives feeling that Zabuza is taking too long, and revokes their agreement so that he can have his own henchmen kill Tazuna instead.
No longer having a reason to kill Tazuna, Zabuza ends his battle with Kakashi, though Naruto is not satisfied by this. Angered that Haku died for Zabuza while Zabuza has shown no signs of remorse, Naruto lectures him on the feelings Haku had for him and the loyalty he felt towards Zabuza. Brought to tears by Naruto's words, Zabuza reveals that he really did care about Haku and valued him higher than a simple tool. Wanting to repent for what he has done, Zabuza grabs one of Naruto's kunai with his mouth and charges through Gato's men to get to Gato, being stabbed multiple times along the way. Upon reaching Gato, Zabuza kills him, and collapses due to his injuries. As Gato's men flee, Zabuza asks Kakashi if he can be brought to Haku, to which Kakashi complies. Being by Haku's side in death as Haku was by his in life, Zabuza wishes that he could go to the same place as Haku after death, and Kakashi believes that Zabuza will be able to go to the place with Haku.
