Keira High School is a government co-educational high school located in Lysaght Street, Fairy Meadow, New South Wales, Australia.
Keira High School has existed as an institution under several names since 1945. Originally a collection of boys' technical schools on several sites throughout Wollongong, the school was amalgamated in 1954 at its current site in Lysaght Street. The school then became known as Keira Boys High School and remained as such until 1984. Since that time the school has become co-educational and pioneered the integration of technology and design into the curriculum.
The KHS campus is sited at the heart of Wollongong's education district. It is bordered on the west by the TAFE-Illawarra Institute, on the east by Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts and is a three-minute walk from The University of Wollongong.
The school has some exceptional music programs such as the beginner/advanced bands run by American trumpeter Eric Dunan. Also, The Units, another of the school's bands, have become quite popular with the students.
With an enrolment of approximately 800 students across Year 7 to Year 12 and 100 teachers, the school is currently investigating the use of single-sex classes. The results of 2 years experimentation have shown that single-sex classes are far better at learning but cause social problems.[citation needed]

[edit] Football
Keira High School has a reputation around both the local Illawarra area and the state of New South Wales as a school of football (soccer) excellence. To date, eleven Socceroos (members of the Australian national football team) have attended the school. The football program is currently headed by Mr. John Cropper, member of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) faculty. Keira High School is the only Australian school of any type to have had an ex-student in each of Australia's two FIFA World Cup appearances, Max Tolson in 1974 and Mile Sterjovski in 2006. Australia's 1956 Olympic Games team captain, Bobby Bignell, is also a Keira old boy.
