Langaran characters in Stargate

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the science fiction series Stargate SG-1, the Langarans are a race of humans inhabiting the planet Langara. The planet is divided in three major nation-station, Kelowna, Terrania, and the Andari Federation, which have suffered from constant war and strife for generations. Only under the threat of Goa'uld domination did they form a uneasy alliance, administered by a Joint Ruling Council.

This is a list of Langaran characters that have appeared thusfar on the show. Langaran names appear to consist of a first name and family name, similar to names in Europe and the predominantly European cultures in North America.

[edit] Kianna Cyr

Stargate character

Kianna Cyr in Fallout
Kianna Cyr
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Female
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer Emily Holmes
First episode "Fallout"

Kianna Cyr was a research assistant to Jonas Quinn.

After the destruction of Anubis's mothership over Kelowna, a Goa'uld in the service of Ba'al came to the planet to discover why Anubis had come there. The Goa'uld eventually took Kianna as a host. Some time afterward, the Goa'uld in the body of Kianna met Jonas, and the two became romantically involved. The two were eventually assigned to the Kelownan Deep Underground Excavation Vehicle, and the possessed Kianna personally upgraded the hydraulics, shielding mechanisms, and primary distribution circuits, enhancing them with Goa'uld technology. It was the symbiote's intention to keep the planet's naqahdria for itself and build a mighty empire.

However, when Langara was threatened by a massive and volatile vein of naqahdria building up under the planet's surface, the new Joint Ruling Council asked the Tau'ri for help. Samantha Carter was assigned to perfect Jonas Quinn's Deep Underground Excavation Vehicle, and eventually came in contact with Kianna. To prevent the former Tok'ra host from sensing the presence of the Goa'uld symbiote, Kianna began taking a masking drug.

When Carter realised the DUEV's design was beyond Langara's technical capabilities, she began to suspect Kianna and ordered her quarters searched, where a Goa'uld long-range communication device and the suppression drug were discovered. Although the Goa'uld was exposed, Carter realised they still needed her help to pilot the highly modified DUEV. Eventually, Kianna's symbiote sacrificed herself to seal off the vein beneath the crust of Langara when the excavator could no longer proceed further. Although she successfully made it back to the surface and was returned to Earth for treatment, the symbiote did not survive and made a conscious choice not to take the host with her, leaving Kianna to live out her life.

Kianna still recalled the time she was possessed by the Goa'uld, and returned to Langara alongside Jonas. [1]

[edit] Dreylock

Stargate character

Dreylock in Homecoming
Dreylock
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Female
Rank First Minister of Kelowna, formerly ambassador
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer Gillian Barber
First episode "Shadow Play"

Dreylock was a highly ranking Kelownan official, and Kelownan ambassador to other nations and planets. She was the right hand of First Minister Velis.

After the Kelownans had learned of the military alliance between the Terranians and the Andari Federation, Dreylock travelled to Earth with Commander Hale and Dr. Kieran in the hopes of obtaining the Tau'ri's more advanced military technology to aid in their conflict with Kelowna's two rival nations. However, the SGC eventually refused to share their technology [2], forcing the Kelownans to use their naqahdria bomb in a preemptive strike.

Several months later, Anubis probed the mind of Jonas Quinn and learned about the existence of naqahdria, who subsequently came to Langara and conquered the planet. After First Minister Velis was killed by Anubis' Jaffa, Dreylock became Kelowna's new First Minister. With no other options, Dreylock contacted the SGC and asked for their help in defeating the invading Goa'uld. SG-1 eventually contacted the System Lords, who sent their fleet and destroyed Anubis' mothership. She eventually allowed Jonas Quinn, whom she previously regarded as a traitor for defecting to Earth and stealing samples of naqahdria, to remain on Langara. [3]

Since the forming of the planet's Joint Ruling Council, somewhat unifying Kelowna and neighboring nations Terrania and the Andari Federation in the aftermath of the Goa'uld invasion, Dreylock has become more concerned with helping to maintain the uneasy peace between the three nations. She again came to Earth some months later when a volatile vein of naqahdria building up under Kelowna's surface threatened her planet. After Samantha Carter managed to solve the crisis, she returned home. [1]

[edit] Vin Eremal

Stargate character

Vin Eremal in Fallout
Vin Eremal
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Birthplace Terrania, Langara
Portrayer Julian Christopher
First episode "Fallout"

Vin Eremal was the Terranian ambassador on the Langaran Joint Ruling Council.

When Langara became threatened by a volatile vein of naqahdria building up under Kelowna's surface, Eremal came to Earth to begin negotiations for the resettlement of his people. He was difficult to deal with, and found it impossible to negotiate with the representatives of the other nations of his world. His resentment toward the Kelownans only increased when it was discovered that the Kelownan's use of a naqahdria bomb initiated the process that could destroy their planet.

However, when Jack O'Neill informed the representatives that their unwillingness to compromise had resulted in the resettlement negotiations being called off, Eremal and the other Langaran delegates began to reassess their positions.

After the delegates leaned that the excavation into Langara's crust had been successful in averting the disaster, Eremal returned to his world, somewhat changed by his recent experiences. [1]

[edit] Hale

Stargate character

Hale in Homecoming
Hale
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer Doug Abrahams
First episode "Shadow Play"

Hale was a commander in the Kelownan military, and advisor to First Minister Velis.

After the Kelownans had learned of the military alliance between the Terranians and the Andari Federation, Hale travelled to Earth with Ambassador Drelock and Dr. Kieran in the hopes of obtaining the Tau'ri's more advanced military technology to aid in their conflict with Kelowna's two rival nations. Hale had little patience with Jonas Quinn, regarding him as a traitor for defecting to Earth and stealing samples of naqahdria. Eventually, the SGC refused to share military technology [2], forcing the Kelownans to used their naqahdria bomb in a preemptive strike.

Several months later, Anubis probed the mind of Jonas Quinn and learned about the existence of naqahdria, who subsequently came to Langara and conquered the planet. Although the new First Minister Dreylock preferred to rely on help from SG-1, Hale secretly struck a deal with Anubis' Jaffa to protect his people. In exchange for Anubis leaving Kelowna, Hale handed over his nation's entire stockpile of naqahdria, and agreed to locate and turn over a data crystal believed to contain the research of the Goa'uld who experimented with naqahdria on Langara many centuries ago.

As predicted by SG-1, Anubis didn't keep his word. When Hale handed over the data crystal to Herak, Anubis's First Prime, the Jaffa shot and killed him on the spot with his staff weapon. [3]

[edit] Kieran

Stargate character

Kieran in Shadow Play
Kieran
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer Dean Stockwell
First episode "Shadow Play"

Kieran was a Kelownan scientist, and head of the naqahdria project to turn the mineral into a powerful destructive weapon. He was also a mentor to Jonas Quinn.

When the Kelownans learned of the military alliance between the Terranians and the Andari Federation, Kieran travelled to Earth with Ambassador Drelock and Commander Hale in the hopes of obtaining the Tau'ri's more advanced military technology to aid in their conflict with Kelowna's two rival nations.

After initial negotiations with Earth for help in defusing the crisis, Kieran privately confessed to his old student, Jonas Quinn, that he feared the destructive power of his naqahdria bomb and realized that a permanent peace between the three nations of his world was the only chance to avert disaster. Kieran proposed to introduce SG-1 to the Kelownan resistance, a secret group bent on taking control of the Kelownan government and forcing the other nations back to the negotiating table. The team reluctantly agreed.

However, when Dr. Kieran fell from a building on Langara and was returned to Earth for medical treatment, it was discovered that his mind had deteriorated due to his exposure to the naqahdria. Also, it appeared that the entire Kelownan resistance was a fabrication within his mind. Kieran was subsequently placed in intensive care at the SGC. It is unknown if Kieran was eventually returned to his planet or not. [2]

[edit] Tomis Lee

Stargate character

Tomis Lee in Meridian
Tomis Lee
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer David Hurtubise
First episode "Meridian"

Tomis Lee was a Kelownan scientist and colleague of Jonas Quinn. He was the chief physicist who oversaw the Kelownan naqahdria project to turn the mineral into a powerful destructive weapon, and was astounded by the power behind the volatile element.

During an inspection of his experiments by SG-1, the naqahdriah became unstable, generating a build-up that would have ultimately destroyed the civilization. Realizing his mistake, Lee tucked tail and ran. However, Daniel Jackson, who was also present at the time, sacrificed himself and manually disabled the overloading naqahdriah generator, receiving a lethal dose of radiation in the process.

It is unknown if Lee was exposed to lethal amounts of radiation, as many of the scientists present were. [4]

[edit] Noor

Stargate character

Noor in Homecoming
Noor
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Female
Birthplace Andari Federation, Langara
Portrayer Glynis Davies
First episode "Homecoming"

Noor was the Ambassador of the Andari Federation to the nation of Kelowna.

When Anubis discovered Langara and its supply of naqahdria after probing Jonas Quinn's mind, Noor was brought to the secure bunker where the Kelownan Stargate was kept. She was present when SG-1 arrived to help the Langarans defeat Anubis, and was amazed at the presence of the Stargate and the Tau'ri which her country previously never knew existed.

Dedicated to the interests of her nation, she was extremely offended when Sevann, the Terranian ambassador to Kelowna, admitted his nation had stolen naqahdria from the Andari Federation in the hopes of stopping Anubis from raiding his continent.

It is unknown what eventually happened to Sevann after Anubis' Jaffa took control of the bunker. [3]

[edit] Jonas Quinn

Main article: Jonas Quinn

Jonas Quinn was a Kelownan scientist who became a member of SG-1 for a year and replaced Daniel Jackson as archaeologist and linguist. As General Hammond demanded that the flagship team be punctuated by a fourth member, to provide an alternate viewpoint, O'Neill accepted Quinn as he would otherwise have a Russian team member forced on him.

According to Janet Fraiser, Quinn could absorb a great amount of knowledge in a small amount of time, aided by his photographic memory. Throughout Season Six, Jonas demonstrated a character very similar to Daniel, providing valuable insight to SG-1. Eventually, Jonas was captured by Anubis and had his mind probed. Anubis learned about the existence of the powerful mineral naqahdria, and its location on Jonas' homeworld, who subsequently conquered the planet. After helping to save his people from Anubis, and with Daniel back with SG-1, Jonas returned to his people.

[edit] Sevann

Stargate character

Sevann in Homecoming
Sevann
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Birthplace Terrania, Langara
Portrayer Jan Bos
First episode "Homecoming"

Sevann was the Terranian Ambassador to the nation of Kelowna.

When Anubis discovered Langara and its supply of naqahdria after probing Jonas Quinn's mind, Sevann was brought to the secure bunker where the Kelownan Stargate was kept. He was present when SG-1 arrived to help the Langarans defeat Anubis and was amazed at the presence of the Stargate and the Tau'ri which his country previously never knew existed.

After Commander Hale had informed Anubis that the Terranians possessed a naqahdria mine on their continent, Sevann admitted that Terrania had stolen their naqahdria from the Andari Federation, in the hopes of stopping them from raiding their continent. It is unknown what eventually happened to Sevann after Anubis' Jaffa took control of the bunker. [3]

[edit] Lucia Tarthus

Stargate character

Lucia Tarthus in Fallout
Lucia Tarthus
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Female
Birthplace Andari Federation, Langara
Portrayer Patricia Drake
First episode "Fallout"

Lucia Tarthus was the ambassador of the Andari Federation on the Langaran Joint Ruling Council.

When Langara became threatened by a volatile vein of naqahdria building up under Kelowna's surface, Tarthus came to Earth to begin negotiations for the resettlement of his people. She was difficult to deal with, and found it impossible to negotiate with the representatives of the other nations of her world. Her resentment toward the Kelownans only increased when it was discovered that the Kelownan's use of a naqahdria bomb initiated the process that could destroy their planet.

However, when Jack O'Neill informed the representatives that their unwillingness to compromise had resulted in the resettlement negotiations being called off, Tarthus and the other Langaran delegates began to reassess their positions.

After the delegates leaned that the excavation into Langara's crust had been successful in averting the disaster, Tarthus returned to her world, somewhat changed by her recent experiences. [1]

[edit] Velis

Stargate character

Velis in Shadow Play
Velis
Race Human: Langaran
Gender Male
Rank First Minister of Kelowna
Birthplace Kelowna, Langara
Portrayer Joel Swetow
First episode "Shadow Play"

Velis was the former First Minister of Kelowna.

As leader of the Kelownan people, he approved the development and testing of the naqahdria bomb, a weapon of mass destruction, which was eventually used by the Kelownan military in a preemptive strike against Kelowna's rival nations, which the government believed were planning to attack.

When the Kelownans learned of the military alliance between the Terranians and the Andari Federation, Velis sent Dr. Kieran, Ambassador Drelock and Commander Hale to Earth in the hopes of obtaining the Tau'ri's more advanced military technology to aid in their conflict with Kelowna's two rival nations. When SG-1 was sent to Langara, Velis welcomed Jonas Quinn home, although Quinn was considered a traitor after he defected to Earth and took naqahdria samples with him.

However, Velis merely needed Quinn to help his people secure Earth's technology, and offered to allow Jonas to return home permanently, where he would be reinstated to his position and have his betrayal forgiven. He also asked Quinn to keep an eye on his former mentor, Dr. Kieran, who was going insane due to his exposure to naqahdria.

When Anubis discovered Langara and its supply of naqahdria after probing Jonas Quinn's mind, First Minister Velis was executed by the occupying Jaffa. He was succeeded by Dreylock. [2]
