Characters in Stargate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- This article provides a list of the more prominent fictional characters in the television shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
- Each race also has a main list with greater detail and completeness.
Spanning 13 years, the Stargate universe has developed an extensive and detailed backdrop of diverse characters. Owing to the huge numbers of characters they have been subdivided by race below. Many of the characters are members of alien species discovered while exploring the galaxy through the Stargate, although there are an equal number of characters from offworld human civilizations.
It should be noted that while SG-1 and Atlantis are separate shows, they take part in the same fictional universe, so no character is, internally, show-specific. On occasion, the Asgard are seen in Atlantis, and in "Critical Mass" the Goa'uld, while the Wraith featured in SG-1 in the episode "The Pegasus Project".

[edit] Stargate SG-1 characters
[edit] Tau'ri
The Tau'ri are humans who originate from Earth. Due to the interference of alien personalities in the distant past (specifically the Goa'uld), there are many human civilizations that exist separate from Earth. The Tau'ri have made alliances with various other races such as the Asgard, and won respect and trust from these greater powers, while also giving aid to planets where technological advancement is not as progressed. The Tau'ri form the main characters of the show. Major characters include:
- Jack O'Neill - Commanding Officer of SG-1 for 7 years. Commanding Officer of the SGC for 1 year.
- Daniel Jackson
- Cameron Mitchell - Current SG-1 commanding officer
- Samantha Carter
- George Hammond - Commanding Officer of the SGC for 7 years.
- Hank Landry - Current commanding officer of the SGC.
[edit] Ancient
The Ancients (properly known as the Alterans) were once the most technologically advanced race in the galaxy, and left behind many relics, such as the Stargates, which countless more primitive races began to learn to use. They were the original humans, and it is strongly implied that they are responsible for seeding the universe with human life. They were nearly made extinct by their arch-enemies, the Ori, in 8,000 B.C.E., although many Ascended to live on a higher plane of existence. Overall a benign race, as Ascended beings the Ancients rarely show themselves or give aid to any other characters. Major characters include:
[edit] Asgard
The Asgard are a powerful and extremely advanced race resembling "typical" aliens (and accounting for the stereotype). Nearly all of them look similar because they have lost the ability to reproduce sexually and must clone themselves to procreate, transferring their minds into new bodies to remain almost immortal. Benign towards primitive races, they have often pretended to be Gods to more easily coax a race into technological advancement or wisdom. Allied with the Tau'ri, it is through their technology and benevolence that they excel. Initially the Asgard used their superior technology to protect human civilizations from the Goa'uld, but were unable to actually combat the Goa'uld due to their long-standing conflict with a much greater enemy, the Replicators. Major characters include:
[edit] Goa'uld
The Goa'uld were a galactically dominant evil race, who managed to enslave most of the Milky Way galaxy following the collapse of the Ancient's civilization, largely by stealing and exploiting remnants of Ancient technology. In their actual form they are like small snakes, but are capable of burrowing into "host" bodies, becoming a symbiote, which then takes control of that body. As such they exert their power through the bodies of possessed humans who they shape into Gods, controlling vast numbers of slaves and footsoldiers. Megalomanical by nature, they constantly fought amongst themselves as well as with other races. Major characters include:
[edit] Jaffa
The Jaffa were the footsoldiers of the Goa'uld. Descended from humans, they were genetically altered to be dependent on a larval symbiote, the relationship both gave the Jaffa great strength and also the impossibility of rebellion. Nevertheless many Jaffa ceased to believe in their false Gods, and various rebellions were attempted. Major characters include:
[edit] Ori
The Ori are Ascended beings who seek to convert all lifeforms to a religion that worships them. In doing so, they gain power and seek to destroy the Ancients. Both malignant and supremely powerful, they are the single greatest threat in the universe. Although unable to directly interfere with mortal affairs, they assert influence by passing technological knowledge onto their followers and clerics, as well as giving their human clerics incredible powers. Major characters include:
[edit] Replicator
The Replicators, were a highly advanced race of robotic, mechanical organisms. An android named Reese, who might herself have been created by one of the Ancients who fled back to the Milky Way after their war with the Wraith was lost, created the first Replicator as a toy, but they rapidly evolved beyond her ability to control. They posed a desperate threat to all other lifeforms in the universe, due to their insentient, unceasing drive to consume, replicate, and spread across all of creation. Major characters include:
[edit] Tok'ra
The Tok'ra are the same species as the Goa'uld, but do not share their evil values, instead opposed to their ways and seeking to destroy them. They share their bodies with their hosts in a truly symbiotic relationship. Covert by nature, they have made an alliance with the Tau'ri, and shared much of their technology. Major characters include:

[edit] Tau'ri
The Tau'ri came to the Pegasus galaxy on the Atlantis expedition to the Ancient's Lost City (Atlantis). Major characters in Atlantis include:
[edit] Ancient
The Ancients lived millions of years in the Pegasus galaxy at Atlantis as well as in the Milky Way. They were forced to flee the Pegasus galaxy after a devastating war with the Wraith, but they left behind most of their technology (including their City, where they left their deepest mark). Some Ascended Ancients still exist in the Pegasus galaxy. In Atlantis, they were known as Lanteans. Major characters include:
[edit] Asuran
The Asurans are a race of human-like mechanical beings composed entirely out of nanomachines. They share many characteristics in common with the Replicators. The Ancients created them to be a weapon against the Wraith, but they evolved beyond the Ancient's ability to control. The Ancients attempted to destroy the Asurans, but a few of the nanomachines survived the attack and began replicating. Eventually an entire city had been built and populated. The Asurans possess extremely aggressive natures and an in-grained hatred of the Ancients and their successors, the Tau'ri. They pose a significant threat to the members of the Atlantis expedition.
[edit] Athosian
The Athosians were saved from culling by the Wraith by the Atlantis expedition. A strong but primitive people, like most human civilizations in the Pegasus galaxy, they had survived for generations in fear of the Wraith. Skilled fighters, many of them joined the Atlantis plight, while others were given refuge on the Atlantis mainland. Major characters include:
[edit] Genii
The Genii are a human civilization of roughly the same technological advancement as 1940s America, who have used the Stargate network to establish military bases on multiple worlds throughout the Pegasus galaxy. Militant and secretive, they excel in their ability to spy and hatch plots. This capacity was developed to combat the Wraith, but they are especially ruthless towards other races if it will further this end. Major characters include:
[edit] Wraith
The Wraith dominate the Pegasus galaxy, an evil life-sucking race that feed off the souls of humans. Vast in numbers and ruthless, seeing all other races as inferior, they hibernate and then awaken in multitudes to cull planets, leaving enough alive to reproduce until the next culling. At war with the Ancients for centuries, despite having lesser technology their numbers forced the Ancients to abandon Atlantis. Major characters include:
