[edit] Las Plagas

Main article: Las Plagas

Las Plagas (Spanish for "The Plagues") are the new agent of transformation in Resident Evil 4, unlike the various viruses from previous games. Whereas Umbrella's viruses destroy a person's mind and body through mutations, Las Plagas are more subtle, invisibly attaching themselves to the victim's central nervous system and seizing control of their mind. Humans infested with Las Plagas, unlike zombies, retain full human appearance and speech capabilities, and seem relatively normal in both behavior and outward appearance. They also retain full human intelligence and are capable of acting collectively.

The Plagas were said to have been sealed deep under the castle by the first castellan. This first castellan had also taken away the rights of the early Los Illuminados. When they were unearthed, they seemed to have been fossilized. However, they had actually been in a deep dormant state that had kept them alive. The memo also says that the first Ganados were uncontrolled savages, and were created from tiny spores from the mining of these creatures. The old Plagas can be seen in rock in one of the chapters in the castle.

Ganados have been seen exhibiting such socially unacceptable behaviors as attacking outsiders, murdering each other, eating rotten and otherwise damaged food, and possibly committing acts of cannibalism. They also do not bother to keep their surroundings sanitary (e.g. by not cleaning their toilet facilities and beds, and leaving their food and murdered victims to rot in various places, such as in barns and in their dwellings). It is unclear if these behaviors are influenced by their circumstances and orders of the person in control of the Queen Plaga, or actual personality changes in the persons infected by the Las Plagas.

Las Plagas are extremely sensitive to light as they will only emerge from their respective host body at night, and even then only after the body sustains a lot of damage, or if its head is destroyed. The head of the host may either be destroyed completely and replaced by the parasite, or the parasite may emerge from the mouth or neck of the Ganado. However, due to their photosensitivity, Las Plagas can be destroyed with the use of a bright light source such as a flashbang grenade.

Several varieties of plaga may be seen during the course of the game. Some appear as the result of damage to certain parts of the host's body, such as the head, and may be a protrusion out of its host's body, or in whole as a detached entity. It is unclear if these are actually different varieties or mutations of plaga or if they represent various levels of maturity. The following is a list of non-unique Plagas or their parts as seen in the game.

  • Blade plagas, found in villagers and commandos, which emerge from their host's severed neck, have a number of smaller tentacles that swing back and forth and are harmless, but one tentacle is quite long and has a blade at the end and attempt to harm their opponent by swinging that blade at them. Their attack is fairly long-ranged and quite harmful.
  • Centipede plagas, which may emerge from the opened necks of zealots, and attack by swallowing their opponent's head whole. Though their attack is more predictable and has a shorter range than that of blade plagas, it will immediately kill Leon if it strikes him.
  • Spider plagas or fully matured Las Plagas, which may emerge from zealots and commandos necks, capable of detaching from their hosts. They will eventually perish after detaching. While still attached they can spit acid. They can also strike enemies with their legs, either while attached or separate (though they deal more damage when attached).
  • Whip-like protrusions, found in Colmillos, and unlike previous forms, they are not spawned as a result of damage, but rather they are simply produced after the Colmillos has found an enemy. They attack by whipping their enemy.
  • Leech-like plagas, most of which can only be seen using an infrared scope, are found in Regenerators and Iron Maidens. They sustain the regenerative powers of both monsters, but are harmless on their own.

[edit] Los Ganados

Los Ganados (from Spanish, literally meaning plural for The Cattle or The Livestock, though the word ganado has no plural in Spanish) are the primary enemies in the game. Ganados are humans who have become infested by the mind-controlling Las Plagas parasites. Ganados appear ordinary, with their only distinguishable feature being that their eyes sometimes glow red at night.

Humans infected with the Las Plagas parasites can be controlled, through sound waves, by the person in control of the Queen Egg; in this case, Lord Saddler. In one of Ada's reports, she suggests that it is possible that the Queen issues commands through high pitched sound waves, the same principle found in dog whistles.

There are three main types of Ganados found in the game (by order of appearance): Villagers (Los Ganados), Zealots (Los Illuminados) and Soldiers (Militia). An official Capcom walk-through book states that the weapon merchant is also a Ganado. Evidence for this is that his eyes also glow red at night like other Ganados.

[edit] Villagers

The villagers were once peaceful residents of a rural community until they were exposed to the parasites. From that point, they became ruthless savages under Osmund Saddler's control. The Ganados' lives look somewhat normal and they have been seen carrying out normal farming tasks. However, corpses found throughout the village suggest that the Ganados are cannibals. The drinking water of the village and the living conditions of Saddler's soldiers are very primitive and unsanitary. When Leon first arrives at the village, he is immediately attacked by one of the villagers after questioning him about Ashley's whereabouts. The villagers are underpowered compared to other Ganados, as their arsenal is comprised mostly of farming tools, which includes pitchforks, hatchets, sickles, knives and dynamite. Upon completion of the game, a series of sketches posing as the background for the credits serves as a chilling flashback of the earlier days of the village. What was once a joyful community happily distanced from the modern world, populated with farmers and their children, became corrupt as Osmund Saddler arrived, and the workers were infected with spores during the Plaga excavation, causing families to become savage and turn against one another. According to the booklet included with the Biohazard 4: Incubate DVD, the children of the villagers died after they were injected with the Plaga parasites by Saddler.

It can also be noted that the Villager Ganado character models are the only standard Ganados that have names of their own, at least in the English localization of the game, as seen on the bottlecap figurines obtained in the shooting gallery.

[edit] Zealots

The zealots are members of the Los Illuminados cult and appear in Ramon Salazar's castle. They are dressed in clerical robes bearing the cult's insignia. The color of their robe indicates their rank. The colors are black for the lowest rank, red for the highest rank, and purple for the intermediate rank. The zealots are better equipped than the villagers, using a variety of medieval armaments. Also, their robes change in style as Leon progresses further into Salazar's castle, which includes some high-ranking zealots wearing bulletproof masks that make headshots ineffective. The highest ranking members wear red robes and goat masks. They wield weapons such as scythes, flails, crossbows and use wooden shields. Smaller numbers carry dynamite or rocket launchers. They look and behave significantly less "human" than the village peasants; unlike the villagers who can walk, run, speak and carry out daily tasks normally, the Zealots seem more detached from the world, shuffling around, mumbling "Muere, muere, muere" (Die, die, die) and "Morir es vivir" (To die is to live). Their skin is much paler than that of the villagers, and all of them appear to be bald. Some have crimson lesions on their faces while others appear to have tattoos covering their faces.

[edit] Soldiers

The soldiers are members of Saddler's mercenary organization, assigned to protect his island complex. They are generally better equipped than other Ganados, and run faster, even striking the player character while in motion. They can be seen carrying stun rods, flails, wooden shields, RPGs, dynamite, crossbows, and bullet-proof helmets. A few burly soldiers carry massive hammers and thick, bulletproof metal armor, as well as thick pieces of metal literally welded to their faces. With the exception of JJ with his minigun and the RPG wielders, no foot soldier actually carries a firearm.

[edit] Notable Ganados

  • Dr. Salvador (simply known as the Chainsaw Man in the Japanese version) is a villager who wears overalls and a potato sack-like mask who chases after intruders with his chainsaw. He is far more durable than a regular Ganado, and is capable of decapitating his prey with a single strike. Unlike most other ganados, Dr. Salvador's body does not disintegrate after he is killed, a trait he shares with some of the Leader zealots in Salazar's castle. An unnamed variation of Dr. Salvador also appears in "The Mercenaries" minigame as a sub-boss in the "Waterworld" stage. This variant brandishes a double-bladed flaming chainsaw.

  • J.J. is a giant Ganado who wields a gatling gun and fires it in long bursts, with brief pauses in between. He wears a red beret and an eye patch over his right eye. He swings his enormous firearm against opponents at close range. J.J. is a mini-boss enemy in The Mercenaries minigame.
  • The Bella Sisters (or Chainsaw Sisters) are two bandage-clad female Ganados who wield chainsaws. They wear bandages covering their faces, but are otherwise clothed in the same way as other female Ganados, and their shared title translates to the Beautiful Sisters, ironic given their startling appearance. They also appear as a mini-boss enemy in The Mercenaries minigame, and Separate Ways of the PlayStation 2 port of the game.

[edit] Colmillos

Colmillos (from Spanish, meaning fangs) are wolves that have been implanted with Plaga parasites. They act like guard dogs for the Ganados. The player will meet both a regular Colmillo, which acts like an over-aggressive wolf, and the Colmillos in which the plagas are more obviously developed - into flailing tentacles which attack with multiple strikes in succession.

[edit] Novistador

The Novistador is a large insectoid creature that was created from experiments with human specimens by Los Illuminados. Its name is a portmanteau of the Spanish words No and Vista ("No" and "View"/"Sight") and the noun suffix of dor. As such, the name Novistador can be translated as the "Unseen Creature", but literally means Nosighter.

The name refers to the creature's ability to render itself invisible to the naked eye by changing the color of its exoskeleton. There are three types of Novistadors in the game. The first type encountered has the ability to turn invisible, while the second type may also turn invisible but differs in that it is completely white. The third type, encountered later in the game, does not turn invisible, but has the ability to fly. Their endurance far surpasses that of a regular Ganado, or even an Island Soldier, being able to withstand multiple shotgun blasts. Novistadors often fight in packs of two to four and have wings. They attack with their claws and spit acid at their enemies, the latter of which, if used as a fatal blow, will leave Leon's face partially burned to the skull. Leon encounters the Novistadors during certain areas of Salazar's castle.

[edit] Garrador

The Garrador, (which means "Clawer" in Spanish) , is a warrior (possessed by a Plaga parasite) who wears equipment resembling those worn by gladiators and appears in certain areas of Salazar's castle. The Garrador is equipped with large claws on each hand, which can be extended and retracted at will. The Garrador is a very brutal creature who will indiscriminately attack anyone and anything in its path and is usually kept under restraint.

Garradors are almost blind, only able to see about two feet in front of them due to their sutured eyelids. Instead, they rely on their sense of hearing to track down intruders, and are easily distracted by loud noises. Walking slowly will prevent a Garrador from hearing its target, as long as it is done at a safe distance, as a Garrador is able to hear its target regardless of movement when in close proximity. Garradors will become enraged when very loud noises are made, such as by bells, and are prone to charging in the direction of the noise and striking at its source, often resulting in one of their claws being temporarily embedded in a wall or other object.

A Garrador's weak spot is the exposed Plaga parasite on its back, which is vulnerable to gunfire. Some Garradors wear extensive armor, encasing all of their torso, excluding their back.

[edit] Armadura

Armadura (from Spanish, meaning armour) is a Plaga parasite that has taken possession of a suit of plate armor from Salazar's castle, which provides a sturdy defense. They attack with medieval weapons, such as broadswords and halberds. Their helmets are loosely attached, and once removed will expose the Plaga, which is extremely vulnerable to bright light. There are two varieties of the Armadura: one in a lighter-colored armor, which tends to contain a scythe-tentacle parasite, while the darker of the two will contain a centipede-type Plaga.

Additionally, some Armaduras may attempt to ambush their victims by staying still until their target approaches, at which point they attempt to hit the target with their axes, and will then invariably disintegrate from the stress of the blow, whether it be to the opponent or to the floor.

While moving Armaduras presumably contain a plaga-infected human, the ones which stay still clearly do not contain a living creature. This makes Armaduras the only plaga-infected enemy in the game which do not consist of both a living host and a parasite. This raises the question of how exactly the suits of armor are being controlled, (a Japanese walk-through book states that the Plaga inside has webbed its tentacles in the shape of a human body inside of the armor) because in all other cases, the plaga takes over the mind of its victim and manipulate it.

[edit] Regenerator

Regenerator
Regenerator

A Regenerator is a mutated humanoid created from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens: according to the notes of Luis Sera, they are the most "clearly distinguishable" creatures born from Saddler's experiments. A Regenerator's most distinguishable characteristics are its pale mottled skin, lack of genitalia, and bulging torso. They can regenerate lost body parts in a matter of seconds, and are extremely resistant to direct damage, but are unable to live without the leech-shaped Plagas which inhabit them, which are only visible using thermal imaging equipment. When a Regenerator has lost all inhabiting Plagas its tissue will begin to expand rapidly and will explode, leaving only its legs.

Regenerators can be heard wheezing and breathing erratically, and they also have their own highly distinctive theme tune which plays whenever one has noticed the player. The Regenerators can stretch their limbs to reach opponents. They also demonstrate the ability to slither on the ground at impressive speeds after one of their legs has been shot off, and their slithering movement is in fact faster than their normal walking. They can also leap from a prone position.

The Regenerator can range from having two to five parasites depending on difficulty level and location encountered. In Professional Mode all Regenerators have a fifth parasite on their back. From information found in a final note from the late Luis Sera, the Novistadors, Colmillos, Del Lago, and other creatures were simply by-products created while trying to reach the ultimate goal of creating a Regenerator.

[edit] Iron Maiden

An Iron Maiden is a variation of the Regenerator with the added ability to generate sharp spikes from its skin. They are able to latch onto their targets and cause devastating damage by embracing and impaling them on their spikes. They have a slightly slower gait than the Regenerators, due to their constant shivering and twitching; on the other hand, they can crawl much faster than normal Regenerators. They also have no visible eyes, while the Regenerators each have a pair of glowing red eyes. Iron Maidens also have considerably higher stamina than the Regenerators, as they contain more parasites. One of these parasites is on the back of the Iron Maiden, posing additional difficulties when attempting to kill the creature. They can be killed without the player having to kill the parasites first; this requires a great amount of damage to be dealt.

[edit] Del Lago

Del Lago (which means literally "of the lake" or "from the lake") is a massive aquatic creature that lives in a lake near the village. The creature was awakened from its slumber by Saddler after Leon's arrival. Leon encounters the creature as he tries to cross the lake in a boat.

[edit] El Gigante

El Gigante (literally The Giant) are huge creatures created by Los Illuminados from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens.

Despite its singular name, there is actually more than one Gigante at Saddler's disposal. If the player rescues the dog trapped in the bear trap at the beginning of the game, the dog will appear and get the El Gigante's attention multiple times, giving the player time to attack.

Despite their ability to use tools like boulders and tree trunks, the Gigantes have a limited intellect, and do not show any signs of loyalty to their Ganado keepers.

[edit] Verdugo

The Verdugo (Executioner) are the bodyguards of Ramon Salazar. Underneath the robes are humanoid creatures, with insectoid exoskeletons, long tails which sport sharp sickle-like blades, which are used for surprise attacks. The Verdugo's exoskeleton is almost completely bullet-proof, but is weakened by exposure to liquid nitrogen, and while frozen it is more vulnerable to weapons fire and explosives, and will be shattered into pieces if hit with sufficient force. The Verdugo possesses keen agility and exceptional combat capabilities.

The second Verdugo merges with Salazar, along with a mutated plant. This Verdugo forms the large snake-like head of the merged entity.

[edit] U3 (It)

The U3 (referred to as 'It' by Saddler) is a creature that was created by splicing genes from reptiles, insects and a human into one organism. It goes after its prey with unmatched agility. Saddler sends the U3 to kill Leon while he is exploring an underground cave in the island complex.
