1825 huet den Charles Darwin ugefange Medezin ze studéieren, huet säi Studium awer ofgebrach fir dunn am Joer 1827 zu Cambridge Theologie ze studéieren. No enger Expeditioun a Feuerland, huet hien 1831 eng Weltrees ugetrueden, déi fënnef Joer sollt daueren. Op dëser Rees huet hien d' Fossilien an d'Liewewiesen vu friemen Inselen a Kontinenter intensiv studéiert. Den Openthalt op de Galapagos-Inselen haten e groussen Afloss op säin Denken an hien huet ugefaangen un denen deemolgen Theorien, datt all Aarten ëmmer gläich bleiwen, ze zweifelen.
No sénger Rees huet hien seng Evolutiounstheorie formuléiert, déi op dräi Grondgedanken baséiert. 1859 huet hie séng Opfaassung a sengem Haaptwierk verëffentlecht.
Vun der Kierch gouf hien och hefteg kritiséiert well seng Ideen guer net der Meenung vun der Kierch entsprach hunn.
1864 gouf hien vun der britescher Royal Society ausgezeechent.
