"Man of the Hour" is a song by Pearl Jam written for the film Big Fish. It was first played to the public at the band's October 22, 2003 concert at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington and released as a single in November of the same year, as Pearl Jam's first release without a label. Although it is played over the end credits of the movie, it is the first track of the soundtrack album.
Singer and songwriter Eddie Vedder was nominated for the Best Original Song Golden Globe Award for this track, but lost to Annie Lennox' "Into the West" from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. A single of this song featuring a demo version of only Vedder on vocals and guitar was made available for purchase through the band's website. The song can also be found on the band's greatest hits album.
[edit] Lyrical meaning
The wistful song is a young man saying farewell to his father: "The man of the hour has taken his final bow/Goodbye for now." According to Eddie Vedder at a June 1, 2006 concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this song is part one of two, part two being "Come Back" off of their recent self-titled album. "Come Back" is set with the same young man from part one talking to the departed two months later.
Since the death of Johnny Ramone, Eddie has often dedicated live performances of the song to him.
