[edit] Other papers

There have been three newspapers of Marshall, Texas: the Texas Republican (1849-1872), and the Tri-Weekly Herald (1874), and currently the Marshall News Messenger (originally the Marshall Morning News), .

The Texas Republican and the Tri-Weekly Herald, both published by Robert W. Loughery, were credited with aiding the election of Marshall citizens, J.P. Henderson, Edward Clark, and Pendleton Murrah to the Governor's office and Louis T. Wigfall to the U.S. Senate.

In the Texas Republican Loughery defend slavery and plantation agriculture; and supported the secession of Texas and later the Confederacy. The election of local citizens and the fiery pro-confederate stance of the Texas Republican made it one of the most read papers in Texas and Marshall a major political center in Antebellum Texas.

KMHT is radio station in Marshall, Texas that operates on the frequencies 1450 AM and 103.9 FM at 1000 and 3000 watts respectively.

KMHT is strongly community oriented, focusing on local news, sports, and events. KMHT is the official voice of Marshall High School athletics as well as ETBU athletics. Other area high school athletics that KMHT covers include Harelton, Karnack, and Waskom. KMHT is also the Marshall affliate for ABC radio, TSN (Texas State Network), Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Dallas Mavricks, the University of Texas athletics, and Texas A&M athletics. KMHT's Website

KMHT 1450 AM went on the air in March of 1947 at 250 watts. A group of local veterans returned to Marshall, Texas from World War II and took advantage of their right to first preferences of frequencies after the radio frequency freeze was lifted at the War's end.

In 1961, after 14 years of operation, KMHT AM was granted FCC permission to raise the daytime power from 250 watts to 1000 watts. Shortly there after, the FCC approved the operation of 1000 watts around the clock. This increase allowed KMHT AM to reach four times a greater area than before.

The year 1981 marked a significant milestone in the station's history. Harrison County Broadcast Company, a group of individuals that included KMHT's present consultant, Tony Bridge, applied for and received FCC authorizeation to construct a new FM Broadcast station, KZEY 103.9

In the late 1990's, KMHT/KZEY was given to Wiley College, a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church, by then owner, professional boxer George Foreman.

Wiley College later sold the station, and in August 2003, Hanszen Broadcast Group, Inc., purchased KMHT/KZEY.

In January 2003, management applied for KMHT-FM call letters to represent the true history and philosophy of Marshall's oldest radio station.

In the years since Hanszen Broadcast Group has taken control of the KMHT signal, Marshall and its citizens have recognized KMHT with such awards as the Community Star and Hometown Best Radio Station.

In the fall of 2006, KMHT 1450 AM changed format to ESPN Radio. The format also includes local sports coverage as well as the network coverage. The KMHT 103.9 FM format stayed the same.

KMHT RADIO is strongly news oriented with local news five times a day. Programming also includes ABC Real Country,ESPN Radio, Paul Harvey, Sports, and Texas State Network news. KMHT also features a live call in talk show called Swap Shop Monday through Friday from 9AM-10AM. The slogan is: "Buy, sell, trade, or give it away."
