The New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, officially called the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Supported Bridge, is a six-span, 1,053 foot-long bridge spanning the Delaware River that connects Lambertville, New Jersey and New Hope, Pennsylvania. [1] The bridge was reconstructed in 1904. It is of steel truss construction with an open grate roadway.
For many years it carried U.S. Route 202 over the Delaware River until it was superseded in 1971 by the toll bridge and realignment of U.S. Route 202 at Magill's Hill between the Rabbit Run Canal bridge and the Phillip's Mill community on the Pennsylvania side. Since the new bridge opened upstream in 1971, the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Supported Bridge connects the re-designated Pennsylvania Route 179 with New Jersey Route 179.
The bridge is now operated as a toll free bridge by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission.
The original wooden covered bridge bridge was built on September 12, 1814. [2] The flood of 1841 carried away three spans which were replaced. The flood of 1903 also carried away spans. This time they were replaced by the steel truss spans that are there today.
